Richmond Mamah Laryea

We must bear in mind MLS is NOT a good league. Good place for Richie to shine. HE wasn't/isn't good enough for the Premier League. I had reservations about his defensive play when Forest signed him. MLS won't unmask that aspect of his game.

Laryea subbed off at half time today v Uruguay. Uruguay played the entire game in second gear and won fairly easily 2-0. Laryea was poor. He isn't good enough for the Premiership. It's really that simple.

Not sure he was even good enough for the championship tbh.

Yeah not one of Dane's best that one.

Just highlights the random, often flukey success rate of transfers. With all the will in the world and all the data and homework etc a signing can just not work for some reason. Which made all the 'in Dane we trust' stuff over the summer make no sense whenever a signing was questioned. I suppose at least with an entire squad of new signings we can hopefully find 11 that work.

At least he was low cost - less than a million wasn't it? And likely on a much lower salary than some of the mercenaries who'd been through the club in recent memory. Was worth a punt in a position where had a established starter and we could afford to find out if he was any good before shipping him out.

There will have been stuff in his stats that triggered the transfer, but you never know for sure until the player is in the dressing room/playing field what you have got. I don't see it as a failure, just a reflection of the Danes moneyball approach-when you are shopping in the bargain basement inevitably the risk is higher...

I would say Laryea is a decent to pretty good Champo player. HE has pace and he has "game". But defensively he is weak and technically he is average.

The one fun thing about yesterday was Richie getting into it with Suarez a few times. Not your best battle to pick Richie lol.

Sorry if I touched a nerve with my previous post. Actually, you’re right, Laryea probably isn’t good enough for the Premier League. I only add the word ‘probably’ because we’ll never know for sure, will we? It goes without saying that even the best players don’t play to their full potential if they don’t get regular starts or, at least, substantial minutes. Despite Toronto FC's poor showing this season Laryea's return has been a breath of fresh air, so thank you all for that.

I missed the first half of the Uruguay game so I didn’t see Laryea perform. Remember that it was a pre-world cup ‘friendly’; the kind of game which gives both coaches an opportunity to switch things around and give younger players an opportunity without too much concern for the outcome of the game. In this instance, coach Herdman tactically changed the formation at half-time from three at the back to two, with versatile left centre back Johnston moving over to take Laryea’s spot. Or, maybe, Laryea was just bad. Evidently, you saw the whole game and chose which you think was the likelier reason.

Regarding your observation: “…Uruguay played the entire game in second gear and won fairly easily…”

Hmm, wondering if you did see the whole game… I suppose you could argue that, having scored twice in the first half, Uruguay wanted to concentrate on their defensive systems or, even, didn’t want to embarrass the opposition by running up the score. But stats show that Canada did have greater percentage of possession in both halves, more corners than Uruguay, and more shots on goal, and, no, they weren’t all taken from outside the box. Still, Uruguay took their chances with two superb goals. Canada didn’t take theirs. As Herdman observed, there were too many occasions when Canada shouldn't have passed when shooting was the better option and vice versa. Given the two teams’ relative fifa standings no one was too surprised by the result - a good experience for Canada against tougher opposition than they’re used to, with lessons hopefully learned. Though contained in the second half, Uruguay was fast on the counter-attack, a facet of the game where Canada was disappointingly and uncharacteristically diffident, probably because Uruguay’s positioning was superior to most teams Canada has faced. Alphonso Davies, arguably the most skilled player from either team still annoyingly takes it upon himself to try and win the game from time to time all by himself. I hope Herdman sorts that out before Qatar. Canada has another pre-Qatar exhibition against Japan, with Hutchinson and Osorio, two of Canada’s starting midfielders hopefully back from injury by that time.

Forest are having a bit of a tough time. I hope Forest manages to avoid relegation and survives to become a Premier League regular. History demands it. But if the worst happens maybe Steve Cooper might consider coaching Toronto FC, the highest paid team in MLS coached by Bob Bradley into finishing one off the bottom thus failing to make the playoffs for the second season running. What a disaster.

Is it possible he just had a bad game v Uruguay and we haven't seen enough to judge him? Looked fine the few times we saw him towards the end of last season? Would've liked to seen him in the Championship this season

I just watched a recording of the first half. Laryea wasn't 'bad' bad but he didn't excel either; on the periphery of play most of the time and often the recipient of ever so slightly misplaced passes when he did get involved. More tightly played than he's used to, as one would expect from the calibre of Uruguay internationals. Good experience for him. I thought getting up Suarez' nose was just fine; who better to piss off just so long as you stay away from his teeth?

I think once a regular he’d have been fine in championship

He was poor. Failed to control a good pass (which went into touch) and then glared at his teammate. He is easy to wind up, and has shown this time and time again. His defensive positioning has been shown to be poor more times than not. MLS is a weak league, and TFC are a poor team, though Bradley is a terrible coach and how he ever got that gig (his son, obviously) is beyond me. Trades away a top prospect for Mark Anthony Kaye, who is a thug with no talent whatsoever. I truly hope Cooper never has to manage a club like TFC.

I’m rising to sniff the bait, not take it.
...Bradley is a terrible coach...
Agree.

Well.if it’s obvious, it can’t be beyond you. But possibly there’s something to that. See below.
...Trades away a top prospect for Mark Anthony Kaye, who is a thug with no talent whatsoever....
Agree with the first bit. It won’t be the first time in recent memory that a player auditioning to take over from Michael Bradley was moved on. I’d much rather have kept a still-developing Ralph Priso than exchanged him for Kaye. We all like to pick what team we would have chosen had we been coach; I’m no different and I wouldn’t choose Kaye as a starter for either TFC or the Canadian team, given the other current players available to either team. Having said that, I don’t know why you would write such disparaging things about anyone, unless they actually were a thug and actually had no talent. Are you sure you’re okay?

The rest of your diatribe I’m choosing to ignore. You’re too high and mighty for me.

I call Kaye a thug because that is what he is. His passing is shit, and he takes stupid fouls constantly in some sort of effort to wind people up. If you have a problem with "disparaging comments" I would suggest you leave this forum. Read any number of threads and you will see plenty of them. Maybe you just need to develop a thicker skin.

Yeah he has looked good in a poorly run club. Bob Bradley--how he still has that job is beyond me. But Richie seems to have upped his game the past six months or so. Good on him for that. You rarely see 28 year olds upping their game.
...but it still only MLS.
Even the championship is a much tougher standard.
and Premiership is a step change above that.
Is richie really up to either of those levels?

The problem with Laryea was that he had 0 positional awareness when tasked with defending, not something that's likely to change given his age. Wouldn't be against him as backup if we were using wingbacks in the 2nd division but that's about as far as i'd go
