Our squad vs last year

Mr RayReardon

Jack Burkitt
Apologies if this thread already exists.. however, with a few days to go I thought it be worthwhile comparing or squad to last year. Injuries aside there is x little doubt we'd have challenged - certainly top 6. So I'm hoping, with better fortune, to be in the mix this year - providing or squad compares. Including Lascelles and Darlow..

Last year's losses (start of season vs now)
Pep
Jara
Radi
Moussi
Hendo
Miller
Greening
Derbyshire
Abdoun
Cox #
Mackie #
Collins #

# expected to go

This season's additions (compared to last year)
Vaughan
Fryatt
Big Lars
Mancienne
Fox
Emergence of Osborn/Grant
Antonio
Assombalonga #

what do we think?

Fryatt > Cox
Big Lars > Hendo
Mancienne > Jara

One thing is for certain, I agree with Fawaz about sentimentality and the squad, by the end of the season, was stale

Discuss - or not!

There is no room for sentimentality in football.

At this point the squad looks clearly better than it did 12 months ago, however 12 months ago i thought the squad looked ok, too.

Who knows what it will look like in 12 months time, but I don't care who we sell or buy as long as we are successful.

We are absolutely streets ahead of where we were last year. All the shit has gone, almost constant proven quality has come in. I'm rock solid erect right now.

Personally, I think signing Chris Burke will far and away be our best piece of business this window. The man will create instead of sharting it into the derriere of Sir Brian's statue ala Jamie Mackie.

I still don't think we'll be promoted, but the squad is looking good. Central midfield concerns me though; we need another signing there. Maybe one plus a loan if Lansbury leaves.

I've not seen enough of Antonio, Assombalonga or Veldwijk to say whether we're stronger or not yet. I think people are getting a little ahead of themselves right now.

I think Fryatt is going to go on to be a very good signing. We have improved. The only player we could be without next season that may have an impact is Lansbury, saying that we would only have him for half the games anyway. I think the improvement around that position has made up for it

It's funny we had no complaints about our midfield when we wanted a defender and a striker.

After watching some dire games last year, I think we can at least look forward to some cracking games this season with this squad. If we get promotion that's a bonus

I think you're right. Last season we were pedestrian and at times brainless.

At least this season there is power and pace going forward. Should be fun most of the time.

We need to get rid of Harding as well and get a young signing for LB. I would love us to sign the Yedlin at seattle but obviously that is being greedy. Squad is no doubt looking better in fact much better but surely we have to worry about FFP unless this mega sponsorship deal pulls off.

Th main criticism of Pearce's appointment was because of his Man City time when they scored very few goals. Well he certainly seems to have made an effort to rectify that. Time will tell, but I feel much more confident going into this season than I did at this point last year.

I get:

Darlow
Hunt
Cohen.
Mancienne
Lascelles
Vaughan
Reid
Burke
Antonio
Fryatt
Assombalonga

Apologies for no doubt 11 spelling mistakes.
That team looks a bit awesome for the Championship. I have players like Patto and Lars on the bench! Two quick wingers and two goalscorers in the team and a bench full of quality..

Collins, Dex and Harding definitely need to go.
Possibly Halford too.
Midfield needs an enforcer who stays fit. Vaughan is showing biscuit tendencies again and so to Lansbury.
Leitergwood isn't the answer. Perhaps a prem loanee like Derby had Thorne last year.

The squad does look a lot better, with better quality players. We have more pace up front now and better options. Still need key players to get back fully fit. If Hobbs, Cohen and Lichaj come back fully fit and quickly that will be a massive bonus. I hope Wilson gets sorted once and for all too, otherwise he will need to be shipped out too.

Last season we had a mint first choice team and we have a fantastic first choice side again this season. We had far too big a squad last year with most of those who weren't first choice in their position barely fit to play league one, hence why we did so badly when injuries struck. We've done a great job so far on the whole in getting rid of the deadwoood and things are looking good!

Don't you just love the name Assombalonga?
I could chant it all day every day.

I'd keep dex. Get rid of Cox and Collins. We need the others just in case of a biscuit crisis

Couple of new loan signings to pad things out in the squad, maybe another permanent deal or two plus new Lansbury contract and getting rid of Collins, Harding , Halford, Cox, Mackie and Abdoun(if he ain't already gone quite yet?) would be mint!

A biscuit instead of a biscuit? Dex's best days are well behind him unfortunately. If he was fit his heart isn't in it anymore. Would you keep Harding? Piss poor in my opinion. Just not cut out to play at our level.

Halford and Harding should be kept, Maybe loan Harding out When Cohen is fully fit and firing

Dan "the warrior" Harding?

Purely a just in case situation. No way would he make the bench. I think he's the lesser of a few evils
