Arguably our best midfielder this season, tidy on the ball, better than Danilo and Sangare...this would be a strange decision but we have to trust Nuno.

My heart says that unless we make a big profit (which as has been said seems unlikely), then this feels like a bad idea. But my head says that if even just breaking even on Mangala is the difference between being able to afford a genuine goalkeeper upgrade and not, then it kind of has to be done. We do have depth in midfield - only breadth in goal ☹️

Just to add - German football websites report our initial deal as including add ons and a sell on clause.

I’d imagine the add ons payable might have been us staying up which means Mangala likely cost us £15m-ish plus plus we’ll have to give VFB 10% of any future fee.

We can’t sell at a loss as that’s even worse for FFP - the fee will have to be £20m+

The bonuses were for Forest staying in the Premier League last season (which was achieved, of course) and for a minimum number of games played.

And yes, there is a sell-on included of a minimum 10% (typically, those are sliding-scale, depending on the value of the sale).

Realistically, with the amortisation so far being removed, anything over €15m represents a profit (albeit slight) but if the proposed sale is being driven by FFP rules, then that’s pretty sad.

He is a player whose career I have watched develop, and a personal favourite of mine, and this season he has arguably been Forest‘s most consistent midfield performer.

That it seems Forest are now being kind of forced into selling him, whilst having dropped €35m (or whatever) on Sangare (who in truth, has not really got going yet) is yet another indictment of the state of the Premier League, and how things are stacked against newly-promoted sides if they want to be competitive.

And meanwhile, somehow Chelsea are still able to stack their club with dozens of players, and Manchester City similarly are able to to sign anyone they want, by virtue of companies linked to their owners being able to throw millions at them in return for having their company logo displayed on a single 3cm sticker stuck to the back of a seat in the last row of the away block at „The Etihad“.

I know there's lots of noise at the minute but I honestly can't see how this would be more FFP related (well, obviously all decisions are to a point) than from a playing and squad balance point of view. Any FFP noise currently is due to the championship allowances/threshold, and BJ's pure profit sale will impact the next accounting year... And nothing has happened yet. What am I missing?

Anyhow, doesn't look like he's rated by Nuno or even in his plans - best for the player and club if moved out now should that be the case, and if fee is an issue then working loans plus options with Juve for Illing Junior seems an obvious one, in a similar way to the Dominguez/Frueler deal, assuming the player would come (he'll likely know a few coming through at Chelsea).

I like Mangala, and have been pleased with his progress this year, but for whatever reason Nuno doesn't seem to. We're well stocked in that position though and with the desire for a smaller squad, with Danilo, Sangare, Yates and Dominguez all being able to play that position (Kouyate too but suspect he's also off), someone has to make way.

Just hope Sangare becomes the player we hope... Danilo too deeper.

This is exactly what's f**ked with football.

Fans focusing on profit n loss and balance sheets, financial forcasts etc etc

WTF happened to watching a game, a team and merits on the PITCH? Ya know...FOOTBALL??

Worra fukin world we live in.
It's not just football mate, it's spread throughout tons of hobbies.

I've read countless arguments on various sites relating to stuff like music, game or film quality and the amount of people who pull out the line "well X product sold more, thus it's better!" is unreal. They actually give a shit about how much money these things make and some even buy crap just to support their favorite developer/company who makes them.

World's way to politically and financially focused now. Millions brainwashed by Twitter to think that their cause is righteous and that money solves everything. Thank God I live in an area which is far less tainted by all that. Have a pint, watch the match, bonk yer bod, and sleep with your dick in your hand. Job's a fish.

I did not realise you had also moved to Germany, Alf?

Such an attitude is also prevalent here.

Maybe the Johnson sale is being counted in the 22/23 accounts to avoid an FFP breach for that period. But yeah you're probably right, it's probably not particularly connected to FFP issues.

He's a good solid player ... and there are plenty I'd want out the door before him. Having said that, if we get a good fee and reinvest it in areas where we are weak then I wouldn't object.

We currently only have 4 midfielders thanks to AFCON and usually play a 3 man midfield. If Mangala goes (reducing us to 3 midfielders), we are a single injury or suspension away from having a big problem on our hands.

Its not even like we'll be able to use the money effectively if we are found guilty of breaching FFP next week either, as I don't see any player worth their salt wanting to join a club with the uncertainty of a points deduction looming. January is a difficult enough window as it is without that major factor to take into consideration.

There’s a lot of fuss on here about wanting to break even or make a profit on a player. Whilst that’s obviously preferable I don’t really think clubs look at it on a player by player basis as you can end up spiting yourself and losing more money in the long run. Pragmatism and cutting your losses is the key.

Also, if we paid £12.5m for Mangala and sold for £10m then if Mangala was on a 5 year contract then (ignoring wages) we’d make a £2.5m profit in terms of P&S this year. The fact that we actually lost £2.5m overall is irrelevant because it’s the equivalent of a sunk cost of £5m to the P&S for his amortisation in the two years he’s been here.

But like I said earlier, I reckon this is more of a football decision because Mangala is a bit Freuler for me.

Nuno generally seems to play a 4231 with 2 CMs, an AM and 2 wingers. Dominguez's hybrid role has muddied that a bit but arguably we only play 2 midfielders, unless you're including MGW's position - but then we have Aguilera who can (in theory at least) cover that position (I don't want to tempt fate by mentioning MGW's injury record..).

I get what you're saying about players coming to us but maybe we'll do some sort of swap for Mangala. You'd surely swap him for a keeper or winger of similar quality, given the squad balance. AFCON is maximum 4 PL games.

Just seems a bit pointless to not make a good profit on a signing that has actually done well.

If we follow that trend, we are losing money hand over fist on our shit signings, breaking even on our decent signings (like Mangala) and then having to sell our good signing just to keep the lights on.

Not great for the owner’s “ambitions” is it?

Mangala has arguably been our most consistent midfielder this season, but judging Nuno's tactics so far I'm not shocked he has been left out of the team and is potentially available for transfer. The two players in the '2' in the 4231 so far have both been athletic and can get around the pitch, whether is be Sangare/Yates or Yates/Danillo. With the greatest of respect to Mangala, that isn't really his game and something I have always picked up is he is a touch slow. Personally I'd accept that and change my tactics to keep Mangala in there but it doesn't appear to be what Nuno wants, and if we are buying in to Nuno-ball, then get players who he wants.

Personally think Italian football would suit Mangala to a tee and Juve and Napoli are massive clubs with Champions League ambitions, so I can see why Mangala would also be keen.

Player is keen to move given he’s not first choice now. Best to ship out asap.

Is everyone operating on a certainty here because of 1 tweet?

He's started 18 league games, probably in top starts. How do we know, after 2 league games and 1 FA game that he's dropped to bottom of the pick list?

I was thinking this. It is actually two tweets and I think Plettenburg is usually quite reliable - but we do seem to have leapt straight to "he's definitely leaving".

Wasn’t it a highly regarded journ though, one that we tend to ‘listen’ to ?
