NFFC Squad - End-Of-Year Marks

Kelvin's Local

Jack Armstrong
Two games to go, about time to enter the monotony of the summer. How do you rank the squad?

Darlow - 5 - Disappointing season. Poor shot-stopping, poor organisation, beaten from range frequently and flaps at crosses every week. Quite simply, he's been below average and Newcastle will be hugely underwhelmed.
DDV - 7 - In the chance he's had he's impressed. It's bemusing to me that he was dropped for Darlow again and has continued to be in the wilderness.

Lichaj - 8 - Good first half to the season and a superb second half. He's our #1 right back now and a thoroughly likable bloke to boot.
Kane - 6 - Utterly mediocre. You can see he has talent but he's failed to really impress in most of his chances. He's just taken up a spot that an academy full back would have benefited from.
Mancienne - 7 - Sensational start to the season, frustrating end. He's got talent and is arguably our best centre half but he's no midfielder.
Hobbs - 7 - When fit he's unstoppable, he's just too injured too often. A must-pick when available though.
Lascelles - 6 - Improved of late, but still shown too many causes for concern. Newcastle will be less concerned with him than Darlow, but still concerned.
Wilson - 6 - An excellent player and of that there's no doubt but he's not shone like he should. The red card against Watford leaves a foul taste.
Collins - 5 - Scored a goal that extended his brief stay but reverted to mean thereafter.
Fox - 4 - He's just a poor, poor footballer. His passing is dangerous, his crossing is wayward, his long balls are aimless and he's often a liability defensively. First out of the door in the summer for me.
Cohen - N/A - Started like a house on fire, and ended like one too.

Antonio - 9.5 - Has the odd off-day but he's one of the best players in the league and lights up a game like Collymore. An unbelievable talent and an absolute steal at £1.5m, bravo to Pearce for that one.
Burke - 6.5 - A bit of a lull in the middle of his season but otherwise he's been consistently creative and surprisingly quick. His crossing is excellent and chips in with more than his fair share of goals too. Age is a worry though, how long does he have left?
Reid - N/A - Our best player, but never ever fit. Such a loss.
Paterson - 4 - Very disappointing from all aspects. I feel Pearce handled him badly and his confidence was drained completely from the word go. A loan spell out can revive him, there's a sensational player in there when handled correctly and it'd be such a shame to lose him.
Barrow - N/A - Hasn't really played enough to be judged. Tricky, but lightweight.
Osborn - 8 - An excellent first full season and a truly exciting talent. The goal at Derby will live long in the memory.
Lansbury - 5 - When he's on form he's unstoppable but for 80% of the season he's a liability. I would sell whilst he peaks in value.
Gardner - 9 - One only wonders where we'd be if we'd signed him in August. A driving force for the entire team and the key for everything we do.
Vaughan - 5 - Be it injury, attitude or form he's just not seen the pitch often enough. It's certainly not ability that's keeping him out of the side, it seems like we made a mistake signing him permanently.

Fryatt - 6 - When he's played he's impressed, but he's just injured too often. He is in no way reliable which is a shame because he's got all the talent to score 20+.
Assombalonga - 8.5 - Well on for 20 goals before the injury cruelly ended his season. He was justifying the fee in spades, but the NFFC curse got him.
Veldwijk - 4 - Not the ideal first season, but it was never going to be. Name one player to make a jump in level like he has and hit the ground running straight away... Give him time and he may turn into a useful asset. He's got all the physical attributes for sure...
Blackstock - 6 - A good 5/6 game spell and otherwise injured. There's a theme developing here, but he's an excellent pro and you can't root against him even if you wanted to.
Akpom - 5 - Fast and tricky but a bit of a waste of time. He's taken up time that would have been better spent with Walker on the pitch.
Walker - 8 - He's an 8 for what we'd expect from him. He's scored an excellent goal and showed that with the right handling he can become a real menace.

Agree on every one of them except Pato. Needs a few shifts on a pit face ( I know there are'nt many now ) to show how lucky he is to be in the profession he is and half a season doesn't make him a superstar

Can I ask what makes you think he thinks he's a superstar?

Spot on apart from Wilson. If Fox is a 4, so is he. His performances have been the definition of phoning it in

I tend to agree on most of what has been said but I think we rate Osborne too highly because of what he did at the IPro.

Osborn looked pretty damn good yesterday. Looked far more accomplished than the much-touted Akpom, who's about the same age, for example.

Cash is King!
Good assessment from the op.

Antonio and Gardner have stood out for me, followed by Lichaj. Mance, Osborne, Britt and Burke have had some good spells as well.

I expected much more from Lansbury, Darlow and Wilson, all good players that have been very inconsistent. Disappointed to say the least.

Darlow 4 - Perennially beaten from long range and penalties, flaps at crosses and has the charisma of a wet mop. More likely to care about putting a hair out of position than conceding a goal. Where's the A1?
DDV 6 - the best keeper at the club by a long way, and wisely tied down again; can't see why he was dropped, and should have been in the team sooner

Lichaj 8 - The odd mistake aside, has been solid wherever he has played along the back line.
Kane 6 - Has done OK when he's played, nothing more or less
Mancienne 6 - Not a full back or midfielder, but a good centre back, too similar to Wilson to play together
Hobbs 8 - Epic, shame he has had bad luck with injuries. Could make a wet mop look solid alongside him.
Lascelles 6 - Very much still a work in progress, but his size and ability will take him a long way, he has no evident weaknesses which are not down to inexperience
Wilson 4 - Not worth what we are paying for him, he isn't as solid as you'd expect from a Champions League player and gets too many silly red cards, and makes too many mistakes. Looks like he's in it for the pay and not for the play.
Collins 5 - Didn't play enough to warrant a proper rating. However, he was playing when DF came in and we had an upturn in results... Still makes too many mistakes for my liking, but you can't argue with the scores.
Fox 1 - He's a pro footballer? I could do a better job (and yes, I can play left back). Harding is much better. What does he offer? He can't defend, tackle, head, position himself, pass, shoot...
Cohen N/A - Best left back at the club, but we probably won't see much evidence of this.

Antonio 10 - Scares the crap out of defenders because he is fast and powerful. That, and he doesn't know what he's going to do with the ball, so they have no chance either!
Burke 8 - He has an intelligent football brain and the skill to match, the opposite of Antonio, but equally effective.
Reid N/A - Shame we didn't see much of him. We need to find a plan B
Paterson 2 - What's the hype? He's still living off that hat-trick against West Ham's kids. Really lightweight and rarely has an end product. Needs a loan down a couple of divisions and to put some weight on.
Barrow N/A - Didn't play enough or do anything really
Osborn 8 - Still looks like a kid, but plays with incredible maturity, he should be a Prem player soon because he works hard and has talent to match. Keep him quiet so we keep hold of him
Lansbury 4 - Temperamental, drifts out of whole swathes of games; not worth what we paid for him until he can find the consistency.
Gardner 9 - We need him, he does all the dirty work in midfield no-one notices, or has done since McKenna left. Shame he isn't ours
Vaughan 4 - What's going on? He did well last season until he got injured, since then he can barely pass to a team mate. Shouldn't be let near a set piece, or the team whilst we still have Osborn. Can we get rid to save money?
O Burke 5 - Young kid who hasn't done wrong but hasn't really done much yet either, next season will be his chance. He's talented so should do something soon. If he uproots trees like he has for the 18s and 21s, despite being 17 for much of the season, he will be one to watch.

Fryatt 7 - Needs to keep fit, but otherwise, the best all round striker we have
Assombalonga 9 - You don't always expect a lower league player to carry on their scoring record, but he did. If he hadn't got injured, or been starved of service when he did play, we'd have gone up. To score as many as he has out of basically nothing is an achievement. Hopefully he will come back as he left off, though this is far from guaranteed. If he does, this is 5.5m well spent.
Veldwijk N/A - The Dutch 2nd tier is a comparable standard to non league. He needs time here to decide if he will make it. Despite his size, he is a skilful player not a target man and should be played balls to his feet. He did well against Spurs, but hasn't had much of a chance otherwise because he still needs to acclimatise.
Blackstock 7 - When he did play, we did well and his all round play produces goals for the team. If we need to play 1 up front, it needs to be him for us to be most effective.
Akpom 6 - Not done as badly as some make out, though he hasn't done well either, he isn't a lone striker and has been played as one.
Walker 6 - Nice goal but missed a sitter just before. Hasn't had a chance to show much more, but is very promising. Like Burke, next season will probably be his time.
