Neco Shay Williams

There’s a pattern tough. He plays well, Forest tick, Forest have an off day so does he..

Stating the obvious I suppose but fans need reminding that he’s only 23 but seems to have been playing football at a high level for years. Fully established in what’s the most successful Welsh side for ages. He’ll have ups and downs but I hope people recognise he’s very capable playing in the best league in the world. He’s well and truly found his place in life at Forest

Always liked Neco TBH. Good young player, deserves more time than some people were willing to give IMO.
Totally this.

Saw him at Brighton last year, not amazing but saw enough there was good potential, then he had to switch to left back. A seamless transition and was not found wanting. He has certainly upped his game and come back harder. He is looking very good now and after that facial injury, I don't think you could ever question his commitment, just occasionally his positioning.

Always liked him. Seems a nice lad to with what he had to face during the world Cup.

He had no right to get onto that flick from Origi and beat his defender to get the cross in. Great example of his tenacity.
The touch at he took at an awkward height and the pace and strength to go around the defender with it whilst ensuring he didn't run out of pitch all in one movement was sheer quality. It can't be emphasised enough how difficult that is

People were quick to criticise Neco, forgetting he was brought in as a wing back at the age of 21, then told to play full back.
He is maturing into a very good defender (Kudus is a decent player, and was forced to switch wings because he got no change out of Neco).
I thought £17m was a bit high for the fee when we bought him, but the investment is beginning to pay off.
I would not like to see him sold off, which is a decent reference point.

It could be a good fun game to go back through this thread and find every poster that said he wasn’t good enough…

Not gonna do that, but it does show that with a little bit of patience, perseverance and experience, players can come good.

Outstanding today. Again.
Neco always gives it whatever he has got that is why most fans will always defend him because he can't do any more than he is doing .
He's a good example to young and senior players

I was a big fan last year, too - when I think he got much more than his share of stick.

He has really doubled down and improved as a full back, he always looked good at wing back. He always gives 100%, is good on the ball and is seemingly improving defensively by the minute.

He's one of those players that won't be our best player week in, week out, but is more than good enough to hold up a spot in a mid/top half table side.

Throw in the fact he seems a genuinely nice lad and seems to want to play for the club, I'm more than happy if he's our starting right back for the foreseeable future.

It's seems to indicate that a head coach's role is to take the players he is presented with, assess thier potential and then coach them mentally, physically and tactically so they can realise the potential.

How close was he to be loaned out only a few weeks ago? Was it Anderlecht? That is turning into a crucial decision right now.
Feyenoord, i think

Neco just didn't look like he knew how to play defence last year. Too easily done with an inside through-ball or not capable of realising back post danger. To me he genuinely looked like it was the first time being asked to defend in his life.

Not to say he wasn't a good player, just felt like if he was going to make it here then we'd ultimately have to use him higher up the pitch where his defensive inability was masked and his good traits: stamina, pressing, passing, crossing etc could still be utilised.

But credit to him, he's clearly worked exceptionally on the defensive side of his game to the point I don't think it's a weakness anymore. It's a remarkable improvement in such a short space of time and I'll be honest I can't think of another player who's gone from so obviously out of his depth in a role to someone who looks like he mastered it years ago over a summer.

£17m still feels a little on the steep side given we've been able to get Aina and Aurier on frees but he's definitely paying a lot of that fee back now.

Exactly what I was seeing last season and the same thoughts I've had on his improvement this season. Like you said, the rapid improvement on his defensive game in such a short space of time whilst not playing regularly there is incredible. He's from the Yates school of mentality and attitude.

Agree with the general sentiment. Thought he looked poor when he first signed but he had a little run last season before he got that facial injury where he started to look the part. This season though he has been pretty consistent when given the opportunity. Thought he was class on Saturday, Kudos got nothing out of him and was a really good outlet down that side. Hopefully it means he can nail down a regular place over Montiel.

Reminds me a bit of how hard Matty Cash worked on his game when he got converted to RB. Although Cash was probably a slightly more all round player to start with.

It’s still early days and hopefully he can now play like he did on Saturday for the rest of the season. I love his attitude though, he’s clearly a driven lad and a good character which always makes him more favourable.

If he does keep up the performance for the rest of the season the £17m starts to look a bit better value. He’d be a 22/23 year old with a proven half good season under his belt and no reason to think he’ll get worse, probably will steadily get better. With inflation and hopefully another season in the league the price tag becomes fine.

He's got a bit of Welsh grit and I like seeing him on the front foot taking the fight to them.
The low block really trashed his whole game because it's not his strength

I wouldn’t give Anderlecht the steam off my piss
I have actually given Anderlecht the steam off my piss, given that some years ago, I took a massive, steaming, beer-induced slash up the side of the Constant van der Stock stadium whilst on a business trip to Brussels, considering it a „dirty protest“.

They won’t get anything else from me, mind you.
