I'm assuming being named on the bench for Senegal was just that then, and he wasn't actually sitting there?!

Unless it's a setback during international duty.

He's never actually played for Senegal before so does being on the bench count as saying he's their's, rather than a France, player now?

I don't think it ever 'counts' until a player makes a competitive appearance, so he could still play for France as far as I am aware,

Stevie has been a bit more truthful this season when it comes to injury and I haven't seen some surprise news in a while so I will trust him this time

I did wonder whether they would bring him on during injury time and let him sit down in the centre circle. All a bit pointless though as he's hardly likely to have France come knocking at his age.

So why on earth was he there!

Didn't someone say the Senegal FA doctors made him go claiming he was fit and named him on the bench to try to save face when it turned out he wasn't?

What’s the betting he regains his fitness just before the WC, goes to Qatar and breaks down again … leaving us without him for most of the season 😡

Agreed and I can't believe Cooper can't see it.
He probably does but what of the alternatives? Though we have a fair amount of CBs, from what we've seen so far, and assuming Niakhate isn't an option for a while, how much will Boly, Bade, Biancone or Worrall be much better? I guess of all the others he knows Worrall would be the one we know about and how he has adapted to the PL. But there is clearly a reason why he hasn't played since Bournemouth and they have gone for a back 4 with Cook and McKenna in the last 2 and adding Boly in vs Fulham as a back 3.

I would imagine Cook is in there as one of the few players in the squad to have PL experience, even if it was a couple of years back, and for his organisational ability, as opposed to a long term option.

if like Monday we drop deep, leave little space behind us, have a narrow back 4 so restricting anything through middle pushing them outside and encouraging crosses in box -then cook and McKenna fit the bill. But when we need to get more adventurous in games and have a higher line, we’ll need some athleticism at back.

Cook still starting does seem like an indictment of our recruitment. Three other players (Balde, Bianconne, Boly) brought in who can't displace Cook?

Whilst we regularly have millions of pounds of player on the bench in either Taiwo or Dennis.

Feels like we could have invested a good sum in another top centre back instead of 3 back up CBs and a back up striker. Easy to say in hindsight of course.

Thing is you can't make massive amounts of changes either.

McKenna and Cook have an understanding on the pitch from last season. They have a new keeper behind them and a new midfield in front of them.

The new CBs might be better but does that work with their relationships on the pitch?

Disappointing to hear he is nowhere near.

We are probably looking at after the World Cup and in early 2023 then.
Then again, Cooper isn't always the most accurate with his fitness updates, is he? Weren't there a few that weren't close who then featured in the next game following said update?

Willy Bolly, A guy with 90 Prem appearances and a player Wolves fans didnt want to see go. Our only CH with any credible Prem experience.

Ive got to ask, where the hell is he?
I wonder if he's picked up a strain or something, because I'm amazed he isn't ahead of Cook.

Love all the hindsight gogggles

First two weeks EVERYONE would have been happy to say Worrall, Niahkate, McKenna, with Cook, Boy etc as back ups was a really strong defence. Only then do we get a long term injury, and Worrall cant make the step up. So Cooper now having to make do, but hard to critique where we started from

I think that is the reason, he knows what he is getting from Cook and McKenna whilst he is unsure of others. I think they will start to get sub appearances if the team starts to develop.

Annoying about Niakhate, he looked really good in the first two games.

Wasn't everyone on here saying after the Fulham game that he was slow and crap as well? A case of the Emperor visiting a clothes shop maybe.
