I'm not so sure this guy has been a 'drain' - we signed him in the champ from our friends, received world cup money, loan fees and there's a purchase option on him. More like creative accounting in this case I suspect.

Edit: and I'll add to that it probably links with us signing another favourite bomb squadron in Hwang - seems that one club will 'help' the other out when they are in a better financial position.

If our FFP limits are more than Oly's and we can afford it without pushing our squad with worse players than we could afford without doing it then it makes sense for the clubs to help each other by distributing players. I think we got Cafu from Oly as well as a few others and they got Bowler and Hwang on loan from us.

Other clubs where they have similar/shared ownership have been doing it for years, one season Watford had most of the squad on loan from Udinese, indeed the Pozzos signed some of those and just loaned them straight to Watford which presumably meant Watford didn't need to pay the transfer fee or player's wages / signing on fee. They did the same with Granada as they own them all, though I think that season meant that the league tightened the number of players one club could loan from another and then the limits of the number of loans in the squad at all.

As for Drager, yes he has got us WC money, loan fees etc without actually really playing at all for us, and if we do sell him before his deal is up we'll get the transfer money too. We've done similar with other players in recent years.

I still stand by my original appraisal of this completely obviously pointless signing....

Re: Mohamed Drager

It really is a move that could kill a ton of good will just rebuilt by employing Murphy, for very little reward. Like fingering a fat bird at the church you're just about to get married to Natalie Portman in 5 min before the ceremony.

Honestly, thank God we're having such a sensible window for a change, coz cluttering our wage bill up for years with daft agent/goon-driven random punts has been our biggest mistake in the past few years.

Good riddance and take our "let's take an ill-researched punt on X player" MO with you.

He wasn't in Nottingham very much, Alf. Spent most of his time out on loan. Doesn't look like he cost us very much at all, in fact we may have even made a profit on him!
