You shouldn't definitively write Yates off, he was statistically one of the best midfielders in the league last year.

Pretty much agree with your thoughts on our needs though.

Maybe he surprises me. I hope he does as I am a huge fan and have been even when he was taking stick.

I just think week in, week out, he doesn't have the quality on the ball that will be required. He has more than certainly earned a chance to prove me wrong though and should see some game time.

I do really like the idea of him as a guy we send on after 70 minutes to just charge about a bit and disrupt the flow of a game. He's also useful from set pieces.

I think Yates will do well, what he thrives in is a leveller that will translate to any level.

Strong, powerful, committed, a threat from set pieces and a willing runner into the box, I don't think it matters what level you play at those will all translate.

It will be down to Yates to adapt to the speed that players move the ball and he will have to match it.

Or, come on man are you sure you want to give this chance of being part of an ambitious club with an up and coming manager and an owner who doesn't want them to make up the numbers.

Said it before but I think Harry Winks is a fantastic player. Wasn't so long ago he was instrumental in running the midfield in games at the Nou Camp for Spurs and against the Spanish national team for England.

Trouble is 50-90k a week depending on whom you believe, double the fee of O'B but more importantly 'bigger' London clubs like Palace want him.

I don't think we'll see an awful lot of central midfield control in the PL without spending 100m on 2 players.

We'll more likely be looking for 2 with great engines to deny the opposition space and time. When we're on the ball their job will be to get us 20 yards up the pitch and funnel it out wide.

Our third needs to be a more creative player that floats.

Absolutely no issue with Yates, think he will do well. Id be more concerned with Garner personally. He went missing at times last season and sat way too deep. Right now Id take him though.

Be nice to see a bit more athelticism in the middle of the Park I think.

Yeah gotta say I'm also not of the opinion that Garner is the answer. Again decent player - good in the Championship for sure, but full on PL quality I just don't think so.
But if he was it wouldn't be in question that he would come here.

He is 21 years old and I have no doubt he will develop into a Prem footballer whether it be this season or next. Once he is a Prem regular we are not in the market for him because he will cost an arm and a leg.

Spot on. I love how he continues to prove everyone wrong.

His determination and desire to improve is to be admired.
I think what might save him is that I don't expect us to have large periods of possession as that definitely is not his game. His harrying style will probably be ideal for us chasing after the ball against some sides. He'll definitely need at least one ball player next to him though.

If we can take our same style and mentality we had in the FA Cup games last season, I think we'll do well.

We need to treat every single game next season as a cup game. Fans behind the team the same way they were last season, the players all fighting against the odds looking to keep moving upwards.

While I agree with the sentiment I think it's much harder to sustain that without the confidence given going into those games by our league form. Get the right remaining pieces of the jigsaw and I think we'll do ok though.

Agreed. He's precisely what we're trying to do - find guys not yet with full blown PL pricetags, who may well end up with PL price tags in a year or two.

We have to secure our Garner's/ MGW's etc now - when there are still uncertainties around them - , and hope that they develop into top notch PL performers over the next couple of seasons. I can't see us spending 50 million quid on a "proven" PL midfielder until / unless we've been up for 5 or 6 years and revenue is flowing.

I like how we've gone about it so far. Value, youth, unproven potential. Lo'b fits that too. Get him signed and then try to snaffle two more CM/CAM's . If we can field a side this season containing Lob, Garner, Mgw and Johnson, anywhere out of the bottom three will do me. Because all of those boys are still almost certainly well off their best footballing years, and they'll be great watching in the meantime.

Its a pointless discussion. The good news is that the paucity of options in CM will mean Yates will play a substantial role next year and so we will find out pretty quickly if hes up to it or not...
