Seems like we aren’t keen on going big on wages

Quite right, too. We now have a CFO who knows her onions (or is it beans for money people?) a CEO in Vrentsos(?) who is apparently a dab hand at fixing contracts and Chairman who knows when to smile.

Quite a change from Fawaz and his mate who did their calculations on a mouldy fag packet.

Apart from the Nottingham Post insisting he is our top target, we haven't heard anything about us pursuing Grabban lately. If we were seriously in for him, I think we would have made some progress on a deal by now. The club has a different target in mind I reckon, and it probably isn't any of the names mentioned so far.

Think wages will kill the deal. The club doesn't seem overly keen to pay overly high wages, and rightfully so.

Possibly. It depends on how highly Karanka rates him I suppose, I would be surprised if we don't get a striker with Championship experience.

Grabban has blown hot and cold throughout his career, I've never rated him that highly but I know others do. He's also 30 so I wouldn't be hugely enthused if we signed him on Premier League wages, but perhaps you have to pay those to get an experienced striker these days.

As far as I can find Grabban is on £29k a week and the fee is supposedly £5m it's a pretty large outlay for a 30 year old who has only scored 15+ goals in a Championship season twice in his career. I wonder how much Stuani is on at Girona, I can't imagine it's anywhere near £29k.

Stuani would probably be earning less but command a bigger transfer fee. His goalscoring record in England isn't great and he's nearly 32, so I'm not sure he is someone we should push the boat out for either.

Not really excited by either Grabban or Stuani. I hope the club are working on something else behind the scenes.

Which is why I keep finding the comparisons to Villa bizarre.

Villa had players on 40k not even making the squad, that's probably double what our highest earner makes.

I expect it will be Grabban and if not him probably Oliveira or Waghorn. Can't see it being a striker who has never played in the Championship before.

Waghorn, Bamford, Grabban, Oliveira, Marriot.
None of them tick every box of what we're looking for. It's a tough one. I can't think of any viable alternatives either.

I think we'll look abroad if we are priced out on wages for a decent Championship striker (which looks to be the case). No point spending money on crap like Waghorn just because they've played in the Championship.

If we're risking it on a player who's never played in the Championship I'd rather we went for Marriot, due to his age and potential. We have Soudani without experience here so I think another non-British player might be too risky.

"it is understood that further talks have been held over a deal to land experienced front man Grabban in the last few days."

"Grabban’s Premier League wages remain a significant potential stumbling block, but Forest are hopeful that an agreement can be reached to bring the striker to the City Ground."

Typical ambiguity from the NP to try and give the impression of it being in the info-loop, whilst in reality being completely out of it.

I agree not because I think it's too risky because there are brilliant strikers abroad of course, but we keep being told Karanka wants a striker with Championship/English football experience and if you look at our core it seems legitimate; trying for Panti, Dawson, Watson, Champ Striker.

I feel like a few new names will pop up or it'll be done late. The downside of doing your business early is nobody wants to sell this early and will hold out for a better price.

Not sold on Waghorn at all but would gladly take any of the others.

It's probably Karanka's preference to have a quality proven striker, but if one isn't available at the right price or for the right wages then it makes far more sense to shop abroad then to sign a mediocre Championship striker who'll add nothing to the squad other than a wage to shift in a year or two.

Bournemouth will want to sell as well and that creates the problem for us re: wages.

Lets not forget. This could be Grabban's last major contract. He never really had pedigree so lived off the Bournemouth wage with his loans last few seasons.

A loan deal might have been doable, but paying all of his alleged wage demands on top of paying a sizeable transfer fee makes this one a no go for me.
