Anyone know the last time we made a signing the first day the window opened?

Marlon Harewood joined on a free on Jan 1st 2011 but he'd already been back training with the club for a few weeks. Transfer wise I can't find anything going back years and loan wise it's odd because the loan window used to be different.

Re: Keinan Davis

Think he will be a decent signing. Listening to Villa fans he is an excellent team player, strong, quick, holds the ball up really well but injuries and others doing well has seen him drop down the pecking order.

If Dane us Identified him, and Cooper has ok’ed it, that is good enough for me.

Very average stats for a striker so I wonder what this transfer is about. We have a striker who dosen’t score on the bench. However if Dane and Coops want him let’s see what he’s got!

Pleased that this is only a loan at least. Really poor record, not rated by Villa fans based on a recent browsing of their forum and injury prone. I'll be amazed if he plays much more than 5 games for us.

Important squad signing.
But he won’t improve the starting X1 - with Cooper playing just the one up front.

Like all the wise old heads on here continually remind us when we get frustrated-every signing is a compromise.

As far as I can see for this guy:

Positives: Big bastard, from a good club who have stuck with him so must have something, young

Negatives: Terrible goal scoring record, injuries

Lets see...

What has happened to the “in Cooperman and Murphy we trust” mantra?
It seems to have disappeared from the Forum catch phrases faster than snow off a dyke.
Personally, I have complete faith in the 2 of them.
Just look at what Murphy achieved during his time at Barnsley.

And look at how they've been since he left.

You should know by now Captain that a couple of defeats will always provide the naysayers and malcontents with a bit more confidence.

Re: Keinan Davis

Looking at his stats, the transfer team are obviously looking at him as a big bustling hold up player rather than an out and out goalscorer.

I mean, if I can work that out so can they, so SC must have a plan for his deployment, it can't be just the fact he's a striker so must score goals, because he doesn't.

Even good managers, CEOs and other people involved in player recruitment make mistakes, there is no one who has a 100% success rate when it comes to player recruitment. Just because I think this is a poor signing, it doesn't mean I've lost faith in them.

If Davis can bring others in to play and give us that outlet ball too, those players in behind the striker will hopefully get more opportunities.

We need to remember that this lads will be coming here to offer a different option from the bench more than anything else.

Judging him by the standards of a starting goalscorer seems strange.

Exactly, last night when Taylor came on and contributed nothing I was thinking Davis would have been the guy holding it up there and actually putting up a fight.

Even still, 3 goals in 73 appearances at nearly 24 years old is very poor. There are centre halves that would blush at that sort of record.

Besides, the biggest concern with Davis is that he is an absolute biscuit. Even if he is any good (which seems doubtful from what I've heard, the closest I've found to a compliment about him is that "he's a big lad"), he'll be injured for the majority of his loan spell. We really need to stop signing broken players.

Re: Keinan Davis

Watching the game yesterday and he is the exact forward we need to make an impact.

The irony of the stats thing is we are likely signing him based off his stats, the whole point of recruiting on stats is to find hidden gems and recruit players that aren't being utilised correctly like we did with Spence. Davis has looked a pain whenever I have watched him.

Let's be honest though, he could have two left feet - he would still be an improvement on Taylor.

I wouldn't be so sure about him being better than Taylor. Even ignoring his goalscoring record for a moment, I've read a few comments from Villa fans saying that his injury problems over the years have ruined him and that he should be behind their other youth striker (Cameron Archer) in the pecking order there.

I hope I'm proven wrong, but everything seems to be pointing towards him being a poor signing (if he even plays much for us at all). My gut feeling is that he is being signed as a cheap stop gap who happened to become available early in the window, whilst we work towards hopefully bringing in someone better later in January.

Re: Keinan Davis

If Villa thought he was shit he would have been out the door years ago. They continued to use him as an impact player even after they got promoted.

No doubt Villa fans will want others higher in the pecking order now because he's 23 & clearly not gonna be first choice there.

I am almost certain he will be better than Taylor, he has clear strengths that he can play too and has never had a sustainable run of games.

I personally think we will sign 2 strikers anyway, and Taylor will be gone.
