Agreed.

Byram's exactly the type of quality Fox's biiscuit which we've put too much faith in during recent years.

We need to stop taking chances on such players in key positions. OK as maybe as backup, but if we're going for it, let's get the first choice folk in first.

are there any non-key positions where taking risks would be OK with you?

Exactly. I don't know why so many of our fans seemingly want us to sign Byram. He may be a good player, but he'd be very expensive and would probably spend most of the season injured. Not worth the gamble at all, we've been down this path many times before and it usually doesn't end well.

Those which already have players good & fit enough to fill the roles on a weekly basis. For us probably centre half.

I'm fine with taking punts on cheaper options which come with more risks if they are bought here as competition for positions. But one of our biggest failings in recent years has been expecting such players to come here and play 46 games, then break after 5.

Yup, that's a good shout.

It's also one position I get the feeling we will spend a few quid on.

It's the position I feel we may spend another £6-7M on. The other signings won't be more than £2M or so. I think we'll be well under the £15M total spend.

I think any signing we make upfront will more likely be a loan signing or for about £2m or less. I don't see us spending huge money on another striker unless Grabban is sold, otherwise we'll end up with an expensive player (either Grabban or the new guy) on the bench every other week.

I'd be amazed if we got a striker for £2M. It's the position whereby fees are incredibly high for quality. Remember £2-£3M gets you Daryl Murphy.

Just looking at the Rennes 2017/18 season he preferred a winger to be main CF even though other CFs were in the squad. In the game v Dundee there was loads of rotation and Lolley was often through the middle. Certainly interesting doing the starting teamsheets and both Lolley/Appiah ended with number 9 shirts. Might be reading into things a little too much but it certainly wasn't the normal numbering system for midfield and attackers even if pre-season.

Diallo (GK), Zeffane (RB/LB), Baal (CB), Mexer (CB), Maouassa (LB), Hunou (ACM turned in CF now), Gourcouff (ACM), Amalfitano (ATT), Brandon (ATT), Mubele (CF), Sakho (CF)

No real DMs are there. Mubele and Sakho CFs that weren't in his main team.

It really wouldn't surprise me to see Lolley utilised as a striker during some games this season.

when he was playing university and non-league footy, Lolley was a striker

Think his goal rate was nearly 1 in 1 as well

My guess is pace will be a priority for his striker, but as you say, it looks like he favours a fluid front 3 or 4.

Interesting, I didn't actually know that. You can see he's got the attributes and can get defenders turning the wrong way

Lolley could be given that striker position, with the freedom to roam out wide to the right side, in a similar style but opposite side of pitch to what Thierry Henry used to do at Arsenal.

I think that would really suit him, with Grabban up top also, playing one twos. They’re both clever players with a great touch. I think it would work well.
