July 2019 Summer Transfer Window - Plans, Rumours and Speculation

Steve Stone's Mullet

John Robertson
Probably jumping the gun here, as still not even sure MO'N will be in charge. He's made it clear his tenure is a short-term one, whether that will be til May or beyond, who knows...

But the reality is, we're back to square one. We've got a lot of players, and lot that need moving on.

I'd love to see us have the 24/25man squad that AK professed he wanted. So whilst i'm bored I've come up with a bit of a list of players I think would be perfectly suited.

All different styles, sizes, valuations and positions. Some more realistic than others.

GK:

David Marshall: Hull. out of contract in the summer
Kieren Westwood: Sheff Wed. out of contract
John Ruddy: Wolves. Never going to get a chance at Wolves
Karl Darlow: Newcastle. Rumoured to be potentially available

RB:

James Justin: Luton. Talented young RB
Reece James: Chelsea. Probably be a loan, but is a beast and real, real talent
Callum Connolly: Everton. Good footballer, likes a battle, versatile
Joel Ward: Palace. Rumoured to have been available before Wan Bisaka got suspended. Solid pro.
Mason Holgate: Everton. Seems to have lost his spot there.

CB:

Liam Moore: Reading. Apparently unhappy there. Athetlic, strong, mobile and decent player. Ideal alongside 6'3 CB.
Matt Clarke: Pompey. Strong talented lad.
Matthew Pennington: Everton. ball moving CB, likes to step into play with the ball.
Ben Davies: Preston. Left footed CB, can move the ball, really come on at Preston.
Reece Burke: Hull. Talented lad, versatile. Think Hull maybe out of Prem relegation money now?
Ryan Tafazolli: Posh. Giant CB. Out of contract, loved at Posh but wont sign a new deal.
Ethan Pinnock: Barnsley, another one they've plucked and is getting better and better.

LB:

Antonee Robinson: Everton. Attacking LB, athletic, quick and likes to get forward
Jonas Knudsen: Ipswick. Out of contract in the summer I think. 6'2 and strong and strady.
Kristian Pedersen: Birmingham. Good player, Brum maybe in trouble financially again?
Erik Pieters: Stoke. Seemingly ready to be moved on. Good technical footballer.
Yoann Barbet: Brentford. Another good technical player, can also play CB.
Greg Cunningham: Cardiff. Doesn't seem to get much of a look in, solid LB.

CM:

Kevin McDonald: Fulham. Obvious issue we have is someone who sits at the base and moves the ball through the lines.
Josh Onomah: Spurs. Had a lot of loans to clubs who don't use him. Talented lad and real athlete.
Kasey Palmer: Chelsea. So much talent, little opportunity.
Leroy Fer: Swansea. Was about to go to Villa, but Swansea pulled the plug. Similar style to what we lack.
Joe Aribo: Charlton. Moves with the ball through the pitch. Again, what we really need.
Harry Arter: Bournemouth. If a move to Cardiff doesn't happen, he is a brilliant ball mover.
Roman Saiss: Wolves. Apparently wanted more football not long back, if they can't give it him, option in the summer.
Joe Williams: Everton. Another one who can move the ball well through midfield.

RW/LW:

Ollie Burke: WBA. If they go up, worth a go on loan. We all know how we can tear a defence apart.
Ronan Curtis: Pompey. Untested a little, but hit the ground running.
Ivo Cavaleiro: Wolves. Was possibly available in Jan. Pace, power and direct runner. What we lack out wide.
Ollie Watkins: Brentford. Similar to above. Effective. Probably cheaper than Che Adams would now be.
Jordon Ibe: Bournemouth. Was there rumours he was available in Jan at one point?
Josh Murphy: Newcastle. Possibly a loan option.
James McClean: Stoke. Powerful runner, gets the ball in the box from wide positions. Loved by all.
Callum O'Dowda: Bristol City. Very talented winger.
Ollie McBurnie: Swansea. Really direct runner with pace, little bit of Ollie Burke in style. Swansea got money issues?

FW:

Leo Bonatini: Wolves. I know he's not match fit yet, but I think he is pretty ideal as 1/3 strikers.
Nakhi Wells: Burnley. Quick off the shoulder. Present opportunity to go 2 up to if wanted.
Ivan Toney: Posh. Mobile, tall, leads a line well. Think he's one who could be effective at this level.
Dwight Gayle: Newcastle. On loan to WBA, if they go up and don't make it permanent. prolific.

I expect we'll go d own the European route a lot again, and I have no issue with that.

I see Bryan Roy posted a link today where we and 4 other sides have watched Dijon Vs Marseille, and they're speculating Mehdi Abied, former Newcastle player.

Some of the above may be open to ridicule due to expected fees... etc. They're just ideas of players I think would form a brilliant squad in addition to a proportion of the players we have already.

Key for me, is athleticism (bar a couple where exceptional technicality or physicality is there) speed and dynamism.

Suppose the biggest question is... will MO'N be here to bring them together?

I could see him doing well with a core of mainly British lads whose attributes match the idea of athleticism/speed/dynamism.

That's an interesting list. There's a few ex-Forest on there to make you shudder (Cunningham!), but the list is just missing the obscure Greek midfielder who's played four games in two seasons and who is moved on to a French second division club three months after signing for us.

Jamal Lowe looks a player at Pompey. He's lightning quick and knows where the goal is.

Given the loans and terminating contracts will be going, but moving others out will be the challenge I think.

The problem with this thread is that its title restricts the transfer window to July: you have such a staggering number of players to ship out and, accordingly, such a number of people to bring in, that July and August together will not suffice.

Many of those names are new to me SSM, so I appreciate you taking the time out to compile that list, particularly the thumbnail sketch of their qualities.

It's all about mid-table...
Aye SSM bit too comprehensive for me

Without a shred of doubt we need some quality in our team, quality that also are committed to the cause.

Great list.
Along with the incoming players, the cull this summer is going to have to be a huge one. We've got a ridiculous amount of deadwood that will be on the books for another year (Zach Clough for another 2 years).

Think Oli Burke would suit MON's style.

Straight swap for Carva a consideration, win-win for all. Carva may even be better suited to the Prem.

We spent 13m on him, Burke's worth nowhere near that. I'll be amazed if the Greeks are prepared to lose so much.

Carva's not either though.

I think it's a fair deal tbh. Carva prob has the bigger potential, but for where we are & what we need now a Burke style player would fit nicely IMO

There needs to be (another) decent clear out and I hope we take a quality > quantity approach to any incomings. Let the fringe u23 lads act as squad filler and don't rely too heavily on Marinakis' 'network'.

There's some good names in that opening list, I'll add some more. Some of these will definitely be out of our reach but then if MON's got a season to get promoted then he should be backed accordingly.

Justin (Luton) - Athletic, attacking full back.
Kalas/Da Silva (Chelsea/Bristol C) - Both having excellent seasons on loan. Kalas a CB that loves a promotion, can also play RB. Da Silva an attacking LB, small but very skillful, reminds me of Bertrand.
Knudsen (Ipswich) - Solid champ LB, decent age, out of contract.
Clarke (Pompey) - One of the best in L1, good age too.
Lindsay (Barnsley) - Same as above.
Cooper (Millwall) - He's massive and heads everything, huge threat from corners.
Van Der Hoorn (Swans) - Had a good season, ball playing CB. Out of contract too.
Vaulks (Rotherham) - Having a very good season, loves a tackle and chips in going forward.
Kane (Liverpool/Donny) - Young box to box CM, having a great season on loan.
Reach (Sheff Wed) - Versatile attacking midfielder, Sheff Wed have looming FFP issues.
Robison (PNE) - One of the stand out wingers early in the season, has recently been injured. MON should know him as he's Irish.
Browne (PNE) - Prolific attacking CM. Another Irish lad.
Powell (Wigan) - Out of contract. Had he stayed fit he'd probably be Prem bound again.
Lowe/Curtis (Pompey) - Both having great seasons in L1, versatile attacking players.
Toney (Posh) - They've found another, big physical presence as well. Would also have aaid Grant who was at Charlton but he's just signed for Huddersfield.
Oliveira (Reading) - Not sure what his situation is, however I think he's a good Champ striker and would've signed him last summer.
McBurnie (Swans) - Has an ungainly style but he's got a good touch, decent in the air and his record over 2 seasons is exceptional.

Assuming Martin is still here for next season he’ll want to sign proper wingers and a big lad with some pace upfront.

It's still a bit of a forward look, but the only player I definitely want us to sign in the summer at the moment is Colback.

It will require a bit more of a financial investment in wages than we've previously made in an individual player, but I think he's worth it.

In terms of other players and assuming MON is still here next season, I'd expect smaller numbers of more established older pros to be coming in to replace and upgrade the rather large amount of deadwood currently on the books.
