January 2020, an important window

About an ex international former wonder kid striker now a bit over the hill and spent the last couple of seasons playing in a foreign league which is at best league one level?

since west brom isn't using him , how about oliver burke on loan with a view to buy if we get promoted. win-win for them and us since they would want to recover back what they paid and a waste since they are not using him. at 22 , burke career can still certainly be salvaged under the right manager and burke has pace that nobody else in our team has.

Over the past week or so I've seen 3 or 4 people claim that Dwight Gayle is a done deal. Is this tongue in cheek, bullshit or are there any credible sources?

I think being their nearest rivals would be the issue.

That, and that he is on loan to Alavês, of course.

As others have mentioned its important that we don't potentially upset the togetherness and chemistry of this group. The more players brought in the bigger the likelihood of this.

To that end I and because Sabri stated very early on he doesn't want a big squad I would envisage 2 key signings, the obvious one being a striker and probably a winger if we can.

I know that Nuno that I know that Nuno that I know
Ollie Watkins will be a Premiership target, and isn't likely to come to Forest on the chance of promotion.
Jack Colback was great for the previous 2 seasons, but I don't think he is a Lamouchi type of player.
Also, the way he has refused to drop his wages for a move for regular football labels him as a full-on mercenary for me.
Muric should return to Man City as Magic Hands backed up by Pantilimon, Steele and Smith (not necessarily in that order)is a decent keeper set.
While Sow might be out for a while we won't be able to bring in cover for him and will have to rely on Yates getting fully fit.
Hopefully Sow will then be fit by January and there will be no need to bring in cover.
If promotion is still on the radar the signings we bring in simply have to be Premiership quality and will cost.
Modesto, Lamouchi and the Board will need EM to give them lots of dosh.
And that makes me return to the Joe Worrall situation.
We have centre backs spare.
I hope we don't sell Joe, but with an eye to FFP we might have to cash him in (nothing less than £25m million though!)and use that money to get in the top striker we really need to support Lewis.

To be fair to Colback, it wasn’t a wage issue. He was in the Newcastle squad until the very last minute and the choice he thought he had was Premier League or Championship.

fark colback , no championship clubs will touch him with his wages. hope we will be sensible in our transfer dealings like we did in the summer. maybe we can look at decent loan deals in , see if Daniel Sturridge is settled at turkey, if he's not and turkey can be a hostile environment for some, try a cheeky bid to get him back on loan to england. he can play both as a striker or winger ...

Walker would have been ideal, someone who'll be happy with bench time but ready to step in when needed.

I'm not disputing what you say Alf, but how do you know that Walker will be "happy" to come back in January to just sit on the bench, rather than remain as Lincoln's main striker for the remainder of the season?

Rhian Brewster, Glenn Murray, Jon Kodjia, Cenk Tosun, Gabriel Martinelli are all potential loan options from the Premier League in January if we start putting the feelers out now, all of which offer something a bit different and put an immediate challenge on Grabban for the lone spot up top.

The striker position is a difficult one to fill.

If we blow good money on someone, the expectation is he plays but this means we either alter our shape or Grabban no longer becomes an automatic pick.

Got to tread very carefully.

I'd imagine there might also be the possibility of Gayle being available on loan. Newcastle may not be able to sell him in the Jan window so if we can stay in touching distance of the top he might fancy a crack at promotion with us.

I don't mate, all I can do is put myself in his position.

Me personally, if I'd the chance to help the club I grew up playing for & who's dad played for back to the Prem, and in the process have a chance of playing a forward role in that - not to mention a shot at playing in the Prem the year after - I'd jump at it.

Thing is if Walker stays at Lincoln and we do go up the same doubts will be raised next year - "can he do it in the Prem? We should loan him at Champ level". If he comes back here and does the biz this year, then that negates that somewhat.

Plus, for me, Walker has already done it to some degree anyway. Under Warbs he got 3 league goals from out wide in 12 matches several years ago now. There's no reason he couldn't return, put some real pressure on Grabs, and even grab that spot for himself.

33 goals in the past season & a bit now. f***ing cracking stuff.

I don't think we're in that much of a bad shape. Just short a striker and maybe one or two in January.

Lincoln fans are convinced that Walker doesn’t have a recall clause in Jan.

I must admit, when he went there I‘m sure it was proclaimed as a „season-long“ loan, and apparently you can’t break those?

According to some learnèd friends on LTLF the recall clause now has to be written in to the initial contract and can’t be added retroactively.

Agreed. While we do need another striker for depth/competition, I think spending big on a striker would be a mistake. Either Grabban or the new guy would have to sit on the bench most weeks which means we'll have one very unhappy (and expensive!) player on our hands.

A better option would be to sign someone from abroad or a younger player from the lower leagues who is an upgrade on Mir and happy to play 2nd fiddle for a bit and fight for his place.

Unless you brought one in who can operate deeper or out wide as well.

We only play with one striker (changing how we play to accommodate another would be a bad idea, especially mid-season) and it would make more sense to sign another winger than sign a striker and play him out wide.

We won't be spending huge money anyway, but if we did I think a top quality winger would be a more sensible investment than a striker.
