January 2020, an important window

Master Yates

Scott Sinclair is out of favour at Celtic and out of contract this summer. Him or Grosicki could possibly be picked up for a couple of mill in January and would definitely improve us.

Colback will be desperate to move on in January and would be another smart signing in my opinion.

Then probably a centre-forward on loan to cover Grabbs. Oumar Niasse from Everton is clearly surplus to requirements there, he’d do ok here I reckon.

That would be it for me. Keep our powder dry until we know what division we’ll be playing in at the end of the season.

If Brentford aren’t within touching distance of the playoffs come Jan, Ollie Watkins could be prised off them. It’d cost a lot, but Brentford will always sell at the right price.

That would such a sick signing

It would probably cost about £15m+ to sign the likes of Watkins. There is no chance we'll be spending that kind of money in January, none whatsoever.

Someone like Olly Watkins, who can play wide or centre forward. Olly Watkins would be great, but I’d guess it’s not a go-er.

Perfect, kills two birds in one stone. Im hoping given we're well covered everywhere else, we could go big on this type of player in jan.

If we carry on as we currently are, I'd expect EM to let SL take whatever he wants out of the war chest to push on.

That's the key thing for me. At the moment in time momentum is with us. If it stays that way we need to keep it going.

The self harm which Marthur & Fazza did in Jan windows was stunning. And EM's reign started similar with an ultimately pointless & expensive change made in his first one, a hash of a playoff challenge made in his second.

Hoping the difference is EM actually learns from his mistakes, unlike previous setups.

in the last days of the past transfer window you got Brice Samba for 2m because Lamouchi needed another keeper despite the fact you had too many keepers. Modesto and the management backed him on something that was an expensive move and at that point looked unnecessary.

i think that they will back him again if needed.

however you still have players that could help a lot and click. Carvalho, Lolley are not giving their maximum. Silva has just started to show things. Rafa Mir will help a lot if he will find time.

i don't think you'll throw loads of money in January just for a backup striker. Sometimes additions cause problems and ruin stability if not wise. Most likely two newcomers on a loan+option to buy.

if Rafa Mir had shown more and could score then you wouldn't need something. you have depth and chemistry in all lines.

last transfer window you formed a team with two players in every position without spending much for transfer fees.

if i would add someone to the team is a left winger with pace and goals.

I appreciate you have your own opinions about this but it would not surprise me to see us spend 8 figures in Jan if promotion looks like a reasonable expectation.

People said that about last January but it didn't happen. People also expected us to spend big this summer but that didn't happen either.

Those type of signings rarely happen in the Championship in January, and when they do they are typically made by clubs in receipt of parachute payments.

Even if we did go down that road, it could potentially be incredibly damaging should we fail to get promotion (either we'd face FFP punishments or be severely restricted in the Summer 2020 transfer window). I don't see the club doing anything that reckless.

I doubt our total spend for January will even exceed £5m, never mind spending £15m+ on one player. Clearly there are going to be some very disappointed people come January.

If we were going to spend that kind of money we'd have done so in January. Unless we sacrifice Carvalho or Lolley, I just don't see it happening. And rightfully so, I'd like to think our current owner wouldn't make such a reckless gamble. The implications if we spent that kind of money and didn't go up don't bare thinking about...

I just feel with the sale of Appiah we made a very clear move towards gearing up for a big purchase in Jan. I can’t get my head round it otherwise

Decent shouts there. Sinclair or Grosicki would realistically be doable, and we could potentially do loan deals for the likes of Colback if wages were an issue.

I think a bit of that might be set aside for January, but I doubt we'll see all of it. Sadly we still have some expensive deadwood (Pantilimon, Hefele, Clough, Yacob, etc) that are still on the payroll and FFP to contend with, which will be where a sizable chunk of that Appiah money will be going IMO.

Even if we did have all of that Appiah money available, clubs tend to not want to sell their prized assets in January unless they are offered well above market value and the player themselves would rather sit tight and wait for a Premier League club (unless offered ludicrous wages). The likes of Watkins just aren't realistic transfer targets (not just for Forest, but also for most clubs in this league).

You're first point is why I think Samba is definitely a Mouch shout. I don't think the club would have even dreamed of going for another keeper unless Mouch said "these here are all crap compared to this dude I know of back om"

Regards Mir, for me we still need a better 3rd option than Adomah or Ameobi. Walker would have been ideal, someone who'll be happy with bench time but ready to step in when needed. Hopefully he returns in Jan or we but someone like Watkins instead

Even if he does return in January, I still see it as a gamble relying on him to be a suitable replacement for Grabban. There is a big gap between Champ and League 1. I've love to see him have a shot but if we are in a great league position, I don't see the club taking that risk.

Modesto will have been set the task to find another striker ever since the Aug window closed. Maybe a winger since then too as SL is still seeing how others fair out wide. FWIW I don't expect us to spend big, but expect the money to be available as a choice. Being mid season we could well see a big name loan come in from Europe.

So long as it's a loan who won't need 5-10 games to get up to speed, I'm fine with that.

Personally I think an on form Walker, chomping at the but to prove himself here, would be enough though.

January loans are tricky business. You either get a loanee that finds immediately a place in the starting 11, and he's happy his loan works, or a loanee who is second or third in choice, feels he should get more playing time, and very soon gives up if he doesn't, waiting till his loan contract expires in a few months.

This is why the idea of a loanee striker seems a bad choice. You already have a loanee striker. Two strikers on loan waiting in the sidelines in case Grabban is injured is a bad set up.

It would seem more realistic to target a loanee for the winger position, where it is more probable that he will find playing time.

As for the striker, if you find someone who's on a reasonable price and seems to have a future even in the Premier, by all means, buy one. But another loanee striker would be a mistake I think.

Striker : Gayle if hes available which someone suggested in another thread.

Width ; Watkins would be great business and could play up front too.

Midfield : Colback knows the club and would fit in seamlessly if Watson falls off a cliff.

Buying the above would suit the next level or adds undoubted quality if we didnt make it.

Muric back to City and a different back up to MH, although Smith might be just as suitable.

I guess our options will be for an attacking player:

- Someone from abroad, who Modesto/Lamouchi identify.
- A proven performer at this level from a club who aren't competing.
- A player from a Prem team who isn't getting a look in.

Players from abroad could be anyone's guess..

From this level, Grosicki obviously stands out.

Prem players not currently getting a look in: Jordon Ibe, Junior Stanislas, Johnathan Kodjia, Matej Vyrda, Connor Wickham, Oumar Niasse, Dwight Gayle, Robert Snodgrass (has played 4 times, but someone I could see falling out of the picture)

Personally, I think we'd go for loans over spending big. But time will tell on our place at the time too I imagine.

I still have a sneaking suspicion it’ll be Vydra. Plays the role Sabri wants, Burnley clearly don’t want him, no other club has the space in their squad to justify the fee/wages.

It makes sense to me.

Over the past week or so I've seen 3 or 4 people claim that Dwight Gayle is a done deal. Is this tongue in cheek, bullshit or are there any credible sources?

Ollie Watkins will be a Premiership target, and isn't likely to come to Forest on the chance of promotion.
Jack Colback was great for the previous 2 seasons, but I don't think he is a Lamouchi type of player.
Also, the way he has refused to drop his wages for a move for regular football labels him as a full-on mercenary for me.
Muric should return to Man City as Magic Hands backed up by Pantilimon, Steele and Smith (not necessarily in that order)is a decent keeper set.
While Sow might be out for a while we won't be able to bring in cover for him and will have to rely on Yates getting fully fit.
Hopefully Sow will then be fit by January and there will be no need to bring in cover.
If promotion is still on the radar the signings we bring in simply have to be Premiership quality and will cost.
Modesto, Lamouchi and the Board will need EM to give them lots of dosh.
And that makes me return to the Joe Worrall situation.
We have centre backs spare.
I hope we don't sell Joe, but with an eye to FFP we might have to cash him in (nothing less than £25m million though!)and use that money to get in the top striker we really need to support Lewis.
