I'd be royally pissed off if I was him. The chances of him getting a game there were always slim to nil regardless of his ability. That's just the messed up way the club is run.

I have no doubts that his number 1 choice of move would've been us and that's been taken away from him due to yet more mismanagement by United. There was absolutely no way we couldve waited so we've rightly moved on and now Garner will struggle to find a top flight club IMO, at least certainly not one where he'll get regular football.

Yes, we're now loaded in CM but we can't guarantee that all or even any are going to deliver. Some could be moving on again as soon as January. You know what it's like under the current regime, there's no sentimentality.

Jimmy is a dead cert and completely reliable. Itv would be no risk to bring him back.

The prices we paid would be inflated for most clubs to pay. Doubt many will be bomb squaded like zach clough etc

Everyone looks like they'll be easy to move on for a fee and without them taking a salary hit.

It is a risk though, we do t know how good he will be week in week out against better opposition, same as Brenna, Worral etc.

I thought we'd moved on, when we signed the last few players, as we weren't willing to wait and we have 6 players for CM

They're all risks in one way or another.

Will they take the English weather. Will physical side of the game be too much for them? Will Mushy Peas be a delicacy too far.

The idea that only lads coming up fro. The Championship are a risk is farcical.

I never said that, I said coming up from the league below is a risk for obvious reason (see Sheffield United). Every signing has a risk yes, some less so than others

It's a shame we probably have enough CMs now because there's no doubt James is a PL player.

He's tactically intelligent, doesn't crack under press, can pass the ball extremely well, is physically tough (a lot more so than the young lad who first turned up here), gets stuck in with the defensive work, doesn't take a bad set piece, and doesn't have any major weakness in his game.

Colback and O'Brien didn't really cope with Newcastle's pressing last week but I think Garner would have.

He's also still young and seems willing to learn and (ETH will also tbh) would benefit from more time under Cooper.

Like the other loans, though, they clearly decided this one wasn't going to happen permanently, focussed on other CMs, and though competition for squad places is good, we probably have enough CMs now to not be able to guarantee him any more than at minimum a squad place.

Anyone is a risk - if we had them already, can they step up? If they have come from Serie A or the Bundesliga, no guarantees they'll adapt to the PL either. But we can't really entertain the market for proven PL players because we are a promoted side after 23 years outside the top flight. They are taking a risk signing for us too, in that we don't go straight back down.

I thought letting go of Wallace and Zinks was a mistake.

There are only 25 places in the squad.

Already, any more incomings means Colback, Cafu, Mighten or Surridge will have to be dropped.

The recruitment team have done an unreal job so far, there is always the Jan window as an insurance policy in case things are looking precarious.

U21s (Williams, Mighten, Johnson, Mbe Soh - and if we did sign him, Garner) don't count towards the limit of 25. So we've currently got space for more players if Cooper deems it necessary.

Once MGW signs, we'll still "only" be at a squad list of 23, and that's including Lyle Taylor who will end up heading out in the next few days.

I can see a team around the bottom half either buying him outright or loaning him.
If this was a conversation in June, we would have signed him but I seem to remember United made us wait quite late last year as well for him.

I'd love him to be here long term, I would. I think he grows into this league and if we went down, he's top quality for the Championship next year.
But he needs to be the first name on the team sheet, I don't think he gets that enough here now.

Different.

MGW will play in #10 role or up top, and we were short on options in both those positions somewhat.

Garner can only play in deeper centre midfield roles (yes, I know he played #10 a couple of times for us, but frankly was shit when he did), and we're well stocked for CM options.

Logic dictates the Freuler/Kouyate swoop ended Garner chances of coming here.

I think they’re f**ked behind the scenes and it’s all going to spill out so you may see a lot of players leaving them soon.
