Half agree but as an outstanding championship player aged 20/21 who's now establishing himself as a PL player after an injury hit season suggests he has levels to work through.

Like last summer I wouldn't want him as our primary target but would love to see him join the squad and fight for his spot. I think he has more than enough about him to make a shirt his own over a season, as he's now doing at Everton.

Indeed. Has shown enough potential to earn a crack at it. Very few ‘Good Premiership players’ become such without working their way up the levels.

My hope is that we stay up and can start thinking a bit longer term about the players we bring in. The Maia and Angelo interest suggests that's hopefully going to be the case, possibly alongside some more established types.
Suppose we've already started with the Danilo and Shelvey signings.

Problem for Garner is there's not a lot of room in our squad for yet another central midfielder.

Ideally next season we'll have Yates, Kouyate, Mangala and Danilo to choose from. Don't think Garner is any better than them and therefore not worth the outlay to bring him in.

And that's before considering the likes of Freuler, Shelvey, Colback and maybe Fornah.

Only way I see Garner coming in is if Everton are relegated, we lose the deadwood AND someone offers us silly money for Yates or Danilo. It's just not going to happen.

As much as I like Mangala these days over time I can see Jimmy getting the shirt off him. Kouyate will be on the decline too, though his experience is invaluable.

For me you'd bring him in as a Frueler replacement, assuming he wants more games than has recently been afforded, as direct competition for Mangala. Could we do better? For next year probably, over the next five I'm not so sure...

Think if we replace Mangala I want someone who's ready made for top half PL.

Really it would probably be James Ward Prowse. Push the boat out for him and you've get better on the ball play and a sudden threat from set pieces too.

I haven't seen enough of ward prowse to know if he's more than an incredible set piece taker tbh, though they looked different players the other night? I agree with your sentiment though don't know who that is and think Garner will be that in 2-4 years.

Anyhow, were probably getting ahead of ourselves here - staying up is the first thing we need to do.

Think we need to upgrade our midfield options if we stay up. Mangala, Yates and Danilo are decent. Kouyate could be a decent squad player. The others, not so much.

I think Garner would be a huge improvement on Colback (sorry Jack), Shelvey and Frueler. Even if we don't sign Garner, I feel that we should look at bringing in someone better than those three.

Shelvey and Freuler are both dead men walking in terms of futures at Forest.
Freuler is simply wrong for Forest.
Shelvey is simply wrong.

IMO he should get in England's squad. He's better than most of the "big club" dross Southgate seems unable to look past.

I wonder if for the top 7 or 8 clubs, JWP might be just a little bit too old, a little bit too expensive and not quite considered as good a buy as someone younger from abroad….

Maybe then it would let us in with a chance. He’d be a great improvement to our midfield.

I’d still take Garner back as well. We will need 6 midfielders in the squad (not including MGW and Scarpa) and for me only Danilo, Yates and Mangala are fit for purpose as starters. Kouyate’s experience is useful off the bench and for certain games, but I’d still like to see two more CMs come in at the expense of Freuler, Colback and Shelvey.

Edit: forgot about LOB. I would have him as one of the 2, so just Ward Prowse please big Vang!

That's the thing when Southgate came in he went for youth and dumped all the seasoned professionals that were not performing. His not carried on turning over the players, his youngsters have now turned to dross.

It sounds like Garner played a big role in keeping Everton up, with Dyche giving him special praise today.

I would have loved for him to join us but it's great to see that he's proving himself at this level. He always seems to work extremely hard for it.

He has great tactical intelligence, as well as the talent to make it happen.

Definitely would have him here at any point.

Are you putting Garner in the starting eleven ahead of Danilo? Obviously not. So I think we need to be thinking a bit higher than that nowadays.
