Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban

Mr RayReardon

Jack Burkitt
He's banned from football right, no reason he can't do another job. He'll take a pay cut no doubt. But that's the same as everyone else whose addiction has impacted on their work

Frank talking the usual bollocks. Sat there pontificating about the relationship between betting and football sat in front of a hoarding with the clubs main sponsor which is a betting company. Talking that he eat he would be better visiting schools and doing worthwhile things (he could do that anyway).

If he’d got a suspended sentence there would be no change, they don’t lose their star asset and they’d all be happy.

I don’t think you can argue it deserves a ban. As others have said actions have consequences. You can help and support people, rehabilitate them and help them move forward but there has to be punishment dished out to deter others.

If football was the only thing you could bet on then you could maybe make more of an argument that he was trapped in the addiction, it isn’t, if he was really compulsive gambler but also a footballer he’d bet on other things and he’d now be getting the support he apparently needs but wouldn’t be banned. The football bets were his decision.

Just like an alcoholic. If a guy is sat in his living room drinking himself in to a stupor every day he needs help. If he drinks himself silly everyday and decides after two bottles of vodka he’s gonna get in his car and pick up a takeaway then he needs the rehabilitation and support but also will face the consequences of his decisions while drinking.

I think they’ve got off lightly to be honest and I’m guessing if it was a lesser player he’d be on his way.

You do suspect if he was a lesser player perhaps just a squad player he would be correctly sacked by Brentford.

But let’s face it if they did that someone else would hire him in a instants so you can understand why they will not sack him. Let’s face it he is their best player.

For me the ban should have a minimum of one year it not two years.

The FA is weak and that’s why he has got off so lightly. Same way Man City and Everton will face no points deductions over FFP. The media do not help here lauding City for the football they play when the brand they have built has been built using methods that’s appear to not meet the FFP requirements at best at worst they have knowingly found ways round FFP using underhand tactics.

The same way you knew Forest were getting relegated this season.
Hilarious swerve but the point still stands.

Toney has been professionally diagnosed so whilst you can debate the punishment all you like there is no doubt the man has a problem with gambling.

Yeah, convenient that a professional diagnosis came from the result of the trial - and not the 4 years prior to him placing his last bet (randomly cured his addiction I see).

I know what gambling addictions look like in terms of the bets you do as my Uncle had one. He lost his entire pension through gambling. 3 bets a week over a period of a year is not a gambling addiction.

And he was lying to the FA before he decided to go and get a diagnosis. It's an easy out to save face & reduce the ban.

Should have been diagnosed with too much money and not enough brain

How can you possibly know that?

He's been diagnosed by a medical professional.

Omar Richards passed a medical with a broken leg.

Your point was?

Not exactly implausible that Toney could have very well have just said what needed to be said to get a diagnosis to reduce his bad. It'd be easy enough to do.

3 bets a week is what we're aware of...

Love that he's been diagnosed with something by probably a very experienced professional, most likely the best money can buy. But the diagnosis is wrong because someone on the internet had a family member who's behaviour was different. Laughable.

Equally you'd think he'd have been invested fully by the FA with full disclosure of all his betting activities.... the gambling companies would be fully compliant with this as they will want to claw back any cash lost if possible.

No way has that guy got an addiction with less than 4 bets a week.

Best money can buy and a witness for the defence.

It's pretty simple, he can gamble on absolutely anything but football.

I think the 3 bets a week thing is a bit misleading. That’s just on football isn’t it? He was also, and is still according to the reports, betting on other sports.

It does seem a bit lenient compared to others who have gotten harsher punishments for much less, whilst not lying or whatever to the same degree too. What’s really odd is how much the commission the have tried to minimise the punishment. The FA wanted harsher punishments, but the commission not only made it shorter than others, and then cut more time off it but they rejected the FA’s push to have it begin at the start of the season because of the farce that a massive chunk of the ban will occur during the summer when he’s not playing anyway.

Exactly. The extent of his problem appears to go much further than a few football bets a week, despite what the experts on here say.

I know I am not very good on the technical side, but can you advise how I put someone on ignore Erik. Many thanks M and M.
It's actually quite simple on the new forum software.

Just click on the profile picture or symbol of the person you want to ignore.

A small panel will appear in which, among other options is "ignore". Click, done.

Be aware that if someone quotes a post from someone you've got on ignore, you _will_ see the quote from the supposedly ignored person because you're seeing a post made by someone you're not ignoring.

Hope that helps - shout if problems 🙂

People trying to equate betting sponsorship and footballers betting in football are doing my head in. Morally they are equatable at all. I understand people may not want betting sponsors but Footballers not being allowed to bet on football is because of spot fixing and match fixing. Not because the FA find betting morally wrong. Toney could have bet on everything else without a problem. People think it’s a smart opinion to have to equate the 2 when in fact it’s not relevant and just whataboutery.
