Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban

I see Toney has received an eight month ban for betting. His ban ends on 17th January, 2024.

Why has it taken so long?
He will miss the remaining two fixtures this season, then the summer break is hardly a ban. He can resume training on 17th September.
Ironic that he scored against us a couple of weeks ago to change the game.

I personally think it's a harsh ban (though obviously it's really 5 months), though don't dispute he should be banned. I don't think there's been any suggestion he bet on this own games has there?

Either way the FA look like f***ing idiots:

Why take so long?
Why wait until two games left to start the ban?
Makes them look like other violations, such as racism, are no where near as important.
I imagine brentford will appeal and if successful the ban will mostly cover the summer months.

We don't know what he bet on yet.

The reality is, the rules are fairly simple and the football industry is tiny.

Whether he is betting on his team or the one in the league below, he could use insider info to put money down.

If the ban is upheld it will rule him out of 8 England games scheduled this year so will probably end his international career.
Looking at it that way, the timing of the ban is punishing him(rightly so)and not the club as much as it gives them time to get a replacement.

He placed a bet on himself getting an 8 month ban.

The FA couldn't figure out whether giving him the 8 month ban would be a punishment or a reward as a result, so it took them forever to decide. He's got them on strings.

Turns out some of the bets were in matches which he was either playing or contracted to the club. FA released the details today.

I am okay with the punishment. Football has to punish footballers betting on football full stop. I agree with the severity of the ban and I have no problem with him training. I probably think he should be allowed to train to be honest because missing games will hurt him and hurt employer. So Brentford will not be happy with Toney either so its a good punishment in my opinion.

Toney has only got himself to blame and anyone trying to deflect this by saying "premier league clubs are sposored by betting ads" are looking for excuses for Toney. Those 2 things are not equatable, being sponsored by William Hill cant affect an outcome of a game like players betting on games. Its not even betting on their own team or themselves either. They can all message each other and organise it so players shouldnt be allowed to bet on football for its integrity.

Anyway I am not going to lampoon Toney hes adult and I hope he serves his ban and comes back stronger and a better man. I dont want him to go into the daldrums just accept his punishment and move on.

8 months (5 realistically) for betting for and against your own team. Should have been longer.

If Brentford had any bollocks they'd sack him, sue him for his contract and sue any team for a transfer fee that employs him.

Agree, I think he has got away with it big time.

To bet on your own team in any circumstances, win lose or draw is unacceptable and is a form of match fixing.
