It's NOT Martin !

Re: It's Martin !

I must admit, I am totally underwhelmed with this appointment.

But, like all managers before him and I dare say after him, he will have my 100% support. Through thick and thin.

Re: It's Martin !

Totally surprised by this, no disrespect as MO and RK are Forest legends but it does smack of fan appeasement. His time was 15 years ago and if I was going for an ex Forest connection I'd have gone for Nigel instead.
Oh well, here we go again and I'll give the new manager my full support, well when I'm not wearing it of course.

Nottingham Forest are set to announce that they will sack Martin O'Neil as their manager next year.

This is either a stroke of genius or absolute insanity.

I cannot quite decide which, as yet.

I hope he brings Roy Keane with him. Woe betide any of the squad who try and put in a performance like Reading last Saturday with him about.

Re: It's Martin !

Feels like its 10 years too late & not an obvious fit with what seem like meddling owners, but Im happy we've got a club legend at the helm & someone you simply have to get behind.

Martin O'Neils a clued up guy, he wouldnt have taken this if he didnt feel he had something to bring to the party. Him & RK wont take any shit & theyll have us organised.

At least we know we havent got yes men here, I'm happy & fully behind the appointment.

Re: It's Martin !

I think this is a really poor move from the club, in all honesty.

He doesn't know the Championship. How many decades has it been since he managed in it? He doesn't know club football anymore; it's completely changed from when he was last a club manager. From what I remember of his time at Villa, his transfer policy is high spend, high risk. I can't see him working well with all the various directors of football, either.

As I supported the last manager, is this the point where I make snide comments about the new one whilst saying I'm fully behind the new manager? I'm not sure how it works.

It's a "the king is dead, long live the king" kind of deal

Half of the Ireland squad were from the championship so to simply say 'he doesnt know the championship' is quite simply poposterus

Yes, thats how it works, yin & yang. Team odd managers & team even managers.

Re: It's Martin !

This is why there's a Nottingham Forest syndrome. The club and the fans can't let go, it's rightly celebrated but it is history and it has no reckoning on what the club is now. There's no way O'Neill even gets an interview without his Forest history. I'm glad there are so many of you who are happy about it, it'll be nice to see some harmony again after the last month or so... but (and I'm aware it sounds twattish) he isn't a hero to half the fanbase now days, he's that bloke who managed Celtic and Villa for a while.

Part of me wishes Lansbury was still here to discuss his golf handicap with Keano

It might be difficult though for Henri to be able to speak, with a nine-iron wrapped around his neck?

Re: It's Martin !

Chaps a very good mate of mine played in the first team under MON at the dippers when they got promoted & in the Prem, and he has nothing but absolute praise for him as a manager. He states him as hands off manager regards training etc, but someone who gets the extra 30-40% from players simply with his presence alone. The man is a also stupidly intelligent bloke, probably cleverer than me, and has a ridiculous ability to grasp the big picture.

+ He brings with him G Wot Karate, and positivity which none-Forest connections don't have.
+ I personally think he inherits some players superbly suited to him & his style of play, who IMO he'll get even more out of than AK (Colback, Murphy, Osborn, etc.)
+ He's used to using CB's at FB & keeping things more narrow, something which is exactly what a club cursed with shit or broken fullbacks needs
+ He knows this league, the Prem, and the British style & systems in general
+ His actual record as a domestic manager is shit hot. Don't let Sunderland sway you, he was without Robbo - his Taylor - and has since sorted that.
+ Stylistically it's not the huge leap which Warbs to AK. Still a switch, but a much more manageable one.

I'll say it............a better appointment than Billy Davies.

Too much emphasis is made on 'knowing the Championship'

The key to doing well in any league, the Championship included, is having good players, and your team organised and strong. That doesn't mean organised in one particular way, just that they are all singing off the same hymn sheet, and that whatever approach is being taken, it's being done in the same way by everyone.

Did Jokanovic have knowledge of this league when he took Watford up in six months, or Nuno when he did with Wolves?

We've had managers on all levels of the scale. From previous promotions from this league, to up and coming managers with a lot to prove.

It matters not one bit. What matters are the players in your team, how the manager has them organised and how they execute the plan.

Plucking Irish players out of the league for the national side is hardly the same though, is it?

The style of football in the Championship has completed transformed in the last five years, and if he approaches it like his last club jobs it's not going to go well for him.

Just my opinion. I'll obviously be behind the team. I just can't see it working.
