Harry Arter

We wanted to buy him and not play him so there's got to be hope of finding another bunch of mugs like us.

It does make me wonder though if there is still a player in there.
You don't completely lose your ability in one season and we've seen the difference between Hughton and Cooper.

Obviously best case scenario is someone comes in for him but if not, if there is something of a player in there, then might as well have him involved somehow.

You lose your ability if you lose your desire though, I think the fact he failed at Charlton probably tells you a lot.

If he can't cut it in League One then I wouldn't be in any hurry to have him back in the squad

He should probably retire, if we're being honest

As much as I think he's done, it would be silly if Cooper didn't have a look at him.

Even if he could just to a point whereby he's an OK backup, that could at least allow us to shift Cafu on (hopefully for a fee) to claw some cost savings.

Who knows, maybe with Cook now in the squad, there's a friend who can help get something out of him. It's interesting how Arter has seemingly opted to come back today, on the day Cook was announced.

Not sure it was his option to come come back...

As they both go back a long way as former teammates, I'd be surprised if Cook didn't ask Arter for his considered opinion about moving here.

If anyone can get a tune out of Arter, it'll be Steve Cooper.

If that doesn't work, I reckon it's probably best to call it quits.

Let's see.

Would be harsh on any of Colback, Garner, Yates, Ojeda or Fornah, probably even Cafu to give Arter game time ahead of them.

Why? If he does well on the training pitch and gets trusted to play a few minutes then earns his spot, why is it harsh?

No one should be guaranteed anything. Work hard, train well, take your chance and don't let it go when you've got in the side should be the mantra all the players work to.

If Arter magically does improve and can play a part then it opens up the door for players like Fornah or Ojeda to get a loan so they can play regular football for six months. It opens up the door to selling Cafu for a few hundred K, and then shifting Arter on in the summer if we want to move him off the wage bill on the back of a reasonably good six months.

There's no benefit to Arter being rubbish still. Bomb squad wage collection services do nothing for the club. If he performs well it gives the club options on what to do both with him and other players.

Because those players are in the side on merit and have put in performances that have been between acceptable and good when called upon, in the Championship or Cup, so far this season.
Arter's recent track record is of failing to put in performances to earn him a regular spot in a League 1 side.

I know Cooper has performed Superman miracles so far but if our hope was for him to stay on loan & the manner in which his career has been falling and his current age it would be amazing if he gets him performing for us.

Hopefully some middle ground can be found in the summer.

Understand the sentiment Congo but it’s professional sport and good managers like SC are pragmatists and will use every ounce of resource at their disposal. There always has to be a chink of hope for a player such that if they stay fit, train their socks off, show quality etc in training there’s a way back in. Otherwise dressing rooms can rapidly become very nasty places particularly with disgruntled senior players.
Like everyone else I think it’s 95% certain he’s done but a wise man like Cooper whose never worked with him will always have the 5% in the back of his mind until he’s seen enough…

So, like Cooper used Back ahead of Jenkinson, because he's been bomb-squadded - the same will happen with Arter. At least Jenkinson will have some company whatever he does with his time at the club these days.

The difference is Cooper has worked with Jenkinson. Only a fool would make a decision on a very expensive player without working with him himself. That’s all I’m saying-maybe you have insight that I don’t have but in professional sport like any other professional area that’s how it should be IMO

I've never claimed to have any insight bud. In fact I regularly point out that I have the tactical nous of a potato. However, having seen Arter's performances last season and his loan-record this season - he'd have to come back and look like Iniesta in his prime to even get a sniff of a matchday squad for me.
Could you imagine if we'd just signed a player with his recent record? There'd be serious questions of what we're doing signing a player who clearly won't improve the team.

Not questioning the sentiment Congo, nor was I being snide about insight. My point was simply in a professional context you would want to take a look at employee yourself before throwing away (in this case) several millions pounds of investment particularly when the number of employees under your wing was as small as this (say 30 fir Cooper in the first team players context). That’s how I’d work in my world and football clubs like this are really just small businesses in that context.

As I be said it’s highly likely it’s lost money but that’s the responsible, non reactionary thing to do. That’s all

last season , thought arter was offering more than colback to the team.

Exactly.
And there’s several more “cut and dried” cases we can name that came back Lazarus like when things clicked or managers changed.
Not hopeful with Arter just not sure

Sorry to keep banging on about it but what if there’s been something in Arters personal
Life we don’t know about-a serious illness in the family say or something else. It happens-I’ve seen it in employees and can have a devastating effect on work performance. Good managers have to know their employees to understand and help.
Likely not to be the case but I’m making the point because none of us know f*** all about what’s really going on in these lads lives…
