Harry Arter

I think thare should be a bit of sympathy for Arter.
He left Bournemouth following the tragic death of his child, because he ciouldn't contemplate living in the town where there were such bad memories.
I would hazard a guess that he is suffering from mental illness that has resulted in the dramatic loss of any rel motivation or desire to play football.
I think we as fans of forest who had high hopes Arter would give us the midfield edge have a right to feel disappointed at that not being realised, but the trashing of him is unbecoming, and fails to recognise what could be at the root cause of his decline.

As tragic as it is, he can just retire from football.

As tragic as it is, Harry may well have processed his grief, and might be doing ok. Some might hazard a guess that the experience might lead to him experiencing ‘mental illness’ , whilst some might hazard a guess that he’s just as likely to have developed some resilience to live life alongside the experience. That’s what I hope for him anyway.

I think that people are being very kind to Harry, perhaps more than he deserves.

If he has truly lost the desire to play football, or to work at it with the discipline and devotion required to succeed at a high professional level, then he should negotiate the termination of his contract.

He may have mental health issues affecting his performance but there are moral issues to be considered as well.

Agree with this.

He'll have earned a wedge throughout his career, enough to live off for the rest of his life. If he doesn't have the desire to play football anymore that is fine, but he should retire because it's not like he can do other things to come to terms with grief if he needs to - as per his contract he needs to show up to training every day in order not to breach contract and get paid...

But his grief was five years ago now, and he has tried to keep his career going through multiple loans so I'm not convinced he doesn't have the desire to play anymore, just that for whatever reason - whether mental health or simple regression- he's just not very good anymore.

Maybe he was trying to work his way through it. He might have been genuinely attempting and hoping that he could have the distraction of football to cope. It might take a while for him to understand what is best for him and there is no one size fits all solution and he needed to give it some time. Completely retiring might have been worse for him with no distractions whatsoever. Sometimes we just need to cut people some slack in these circumstances.

He made a move away from Bournemouth intially to get away from the area, but maybe that was too far from home. He's probably still figuring it all out himself.

I'm not convinced that anyone who has not lost a child like Arter has the ability to truly understand what emotional strain that can put on a person.

My sister died at age 9, I can tell you all that there's nothing like that for absolutely screwing up everyone in the family.

I lost my wife so I coped with my grief by visiting the 92 football league grounds.

Not as daft as it sounds; it gave me something else to think about. The planning and time it took, plus I chatted to other people I could lose myself in the project.

We all do it differently; I still, ten years later, walk about the house discussing life with my wife. It helps having Boris about, plenty to talk about!

Again it’s good to see people taking a compassionate view of Arter’s situation.

However I wonder if he might have found another way of dealing with his grief than asking a football club to pay him bucket loads of money whilst he tried to find a way through his grief.

Sorry to hear that.

My sister gave birth to a baby in the back of my car as I was driving her to hospital.

The child was a stillborn and it really messed us up as a family at the time. My sister is still not over it.

Thanks. That's an awful situation, my missus suffered a miscarriage which was obviously very sad but to lose a child having given birth must be terrible. Commiserations to all.

Bloody hell, sorry to hear about these awful situations. Wishing the best to those involved, and those around them.

Cheers. All a long time ago for me but it's stuff that stays with you. I was 7 when my sister died, and without going into details I sort of blame myself, even though that's ridiculous, but it's there. Poor mum, it was devastating for her.

Anyway it's Christmas, enough of my issues!

All the best everyone.

Been sent back by Charlton. Club tagged it onto the end of the Cook announcement:

"Forest can also confirm that midfielder Harry Arter has returned to the club following a loan spell in League One with Charlton Athletic. The 32-year-old featured five times for The Addicks during his time at The Valley."

Won't be able to get rid of him this season if he gets a game on Sunday.

Paul Taylor said it was Arters decision to come back, might as well anyway he wasn’t getting any playtime.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Let's just hope there's someone else willing to give him a go.

Yeah the relevant regulation is 5.4:

"Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs, subject to the temporary exceptions below...

During the following period, players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs and are eligible to play official matches for three clubs during one season:

a) for associations following a dual-year calendar: the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons; and
b) for associations following a single-year calendar: the 2020 and 2021 seasons."

So whilst a player can be registered for three clubs in a season they can only play for two, so unless someone wants to buy him and not play him then if he plays for us this season we can't sell him.
