Anyone else agree that this is going to be a big year for him? When fully fit he is just what we have been missing badly.

Sorry, after seeing more of him last season I don't think he's good enough. Fit or injured I wouldn't play him unless desperate, and I suspect his chances will probably be reduced due to fewer number of subs allowed.

He had a recurring injury last season and has never really had a run of games, but from the few cameos he makes he is able to beat his man and deliver a decent cross, which is much more than someone like Anderson brings to the team.

I've always been under the impression that McCleary could contribute a lot to the team.. unfortunately, most of the times he has looked dangerous have been after coming on as a sub with 20 minutes to go.. and not carried that into the rare opportunities he did get a start where as mentioned above he looked mostly poor to say the least.. that said he is still young and I'm sure with a run of games he could develop into a handy winger at this level as he possesses pace and skill.. just not the consistency or decision making to apply that pace and skill that I believe would come with game-time.

However, with him being injured now.. the league being as tight as it is this year, I don't think we can really take the gamble on giving him a run of games to try and get him to hit form.. much more likely imo that we will bring in a winger, be it on loan or perm (here's wishing) with GMac shipped out on loan to a lower champ/upper L1 club to see what he can do with a run of games and decide on his future there. Do rate the lad though.

McCleary seems to me, one of those players that only seems good when you're like 2 or 3 nil up and he comes on, and rips them a new hole. Other than that he is extremely lightweight and a liability 75% of the time. If he were to come back physically stronger and learn to tackle, he would be twice as good as Anderson as he actually knows how to go past a player.

Yes, I think he and the club would benefit from getting him out on an extended loan spell this season.

Sorry, I believe Anderson is a better player than McClearly.

Anderson can't cross, he can't beat a defender and is slower than McCleary, who takes on defenders and can deliver a decent final ball.

Can you even imagine Anderson scoring that goal which McCleary did against Leeds? (Pretty much all of Anderon's goals have looked like complete misshits to me)

The only decent side of Anderson's game compared to our other wingers (apart from Cohen) is that he is decent at tracking back and defending. He has really made the Defensive winger position his own in the past few years.

Mcleary always looks like he has the pace to do absolutely anything out there......and then does nothing (or very little).
He is best when subbed on at 80 mins and everyone else is tired. He can generally beat his man before losing possession or hitting a shot or cross into the stands.
When he gets a rare start he seems to vanish into thin air and gets dropped back to the bench.
Its time to loan him out to a L1 outfit!

I still think there is something there, that little unpredictable spark that you look for in a wide player. Unfortunately he hasn't shown it nearly often enough or with anything approaching consistancy. If he doesn't do so soon, he will slide down the leagues.

Get him loaned out. Not convinced he can do it at this level yet, but if a run of games is what he needs he aint gonna get it here and he obviously doesn't feature in Schteves plans very much at this point in time, so send him to somewhere like Sheff Wed/Utd for a bit.

I'd like to see a 'McClarened McCleary' as Steve has a far greater enthusiasm for attacking wide men and the coaching thereof that Billy... we might just see McCleary benefit from supply to run on to from Greening, with more mobile and tenacious options ahead of him like Miller, Findley and better converters of a cross like Derbyshire.

Fully fit, with a clear role developed on the training field with McClaren, he could well be a bit of an answer for us. If it turns out not to be so, he needs to move on.

I think that Ando is a better all round player but mccleary is a more dangerous winger and the only time where he almost played a full game last season was against leeds last season and he scored

if only one of them was left footed so we could replace reid to bring him more central

McClaren wants a fast winger that can cross the ball, so I'm sure McCleary will get a chance when fit. Anderson's crossing is abysmal, so much so that most of the time he decides not to cross.

to be fair to mccleary he did come from non league side bromley who are the worst team i have ever seen play football so we can't really expect him to be another messi

You must be a fantasist mate!

That was meant to say "Could". I think Big Mac should give him a go. he's showed he can beat a man, he can put good crosses in and he can score. He just needs to be, like the rest of the squad, more consistent with it.
