Liking this signing a lot, especially on a free.

All of his goals are in and around the 6 yard box. Think about the service he'll be getting.

He's the type that can easily partner Henderson/Cox/Dutch lad.

The quickness of the signing impresses me too.

Yeah I agree with you but an improvement on Henderson and Cox is not hard though, just perspective is needed thats all he is not the answer he a bench player for me for a better striker. I dont know why people think I am being negative though just being realistic and as I said the Fryatt signing could fall into a greater context that would make all my arguments null and void we could end up with a strike force of Samaras, Fryatt, Wilson and Veldwijk and sell Cox and Henderson and that would be fantastic, if we end up with a strike force of Fryatt, Cox, Henderson, and Veldwijk then that is no where as good. He has hot 16 in the championship as his benchmark, he always gets injured, he is slow and a little overweight he sounds like Cox but obviously a much better finisher.

Slightly unfair summary on Fryatt imo, especially if he gets a good pre-season under his belt. Granted, he's probably not going to get 30 goals; but realistically, we can't expect to get promoted in Psycho's first year either.

We need to start building a better squad and any player who will drop a division to get minutes is just the ticket in my book!

Dropping a division is not a real argument or should be considered a plus Danny Collins dropped a division, we just differ in opinion well have to wait and see obviously, I hope he is awesome I dont enjoy these things, we have signed second string strikers before and that has yielded what we have seen, all second choice in there respective teams, wouldn't be good for once to sign someone else's top striker coming off a 20 plus goal season. All these arguments about Fryatt were used for Cox and Henderson plus he is not a player we could resell and will only deteriorate now.

If you ignore his early career (aged 21 and below), since the 2008/09 season Fryatt has played 204 games and scored 84 goals. That's without considering substitute appearances within those 204 games. I'd say that's a pretty damn good record

You are missing 53 sub appearances we will wait and see his career record is 0.32 goals a game Cox is 0.27 yet we ridicule one and the other is going to get 20 championship goals I am sceptical and rightfully so in the evidence I have seen he has never scored 20 goals in the championship. Its just a differ in opinion well wait and see I think he will get 14 goals if he plays 46 games. My other point is a good one we have always signed reserve strikers other teams casts offs who dont score a lot wouldnt it be awesome to sign someone young who has scored 20 plus goals is hungry and has a resale value Fryatt to me is more of the same.

Fair point but what else can we do in our position? Ignore FFP and bid 9m for Rhodes or whoever? Or sign a L1 striker like Wilson for 3m and hope they can make the step up?
A player like Fryatt on a free is a sound bit of business. I'm not expecting him to set the league on fire with goals but I think he will make a good contribution.

Come on man, fragment, use paragraphs. Your posts make me dizzy without reading them.

Couldn't agree more with him. I think Fryatt, in terms of bang for the buck, is a great signing. Makes a very good point about having a run in the side too, which is something which stats alone don't reflect.

Also nice of him to feed us a little tit-bit on Mackie & Cox. Cox has a lot in his locker, but we aint seen enough of it and Mackie's more dependable in terms of fitness.

f*** the world cup, I'm buzzing at next season :psycho:

And Garry would know a thing or two about Centre Forwards.

(Watch the 1980 European Cup Final kids - one of the finest displays of unselfish, lone-striker play you will ever see from young Birtles).

Clough said words to the same effect in one of his books.

How common was playing one up front back then?

Hardly ever seen.

Talk had been before the game how good Hamburg were (and they were in truth a very good side) and how many goals they were going to win by.

Mr. Clough deployed a then-rarely-seen 4-5-1 formation with Birtles as the lone frontman, and it nullified Hamburg's supposedly superior midfield.

Birtles ran his socks off. He seemed to be everywhere, acting as an outlet, holding the ball up and generally annoying both Hamburg Centre Backs.

Lloyd/Burns combo scaring the s**t out of Keegan in the tunnel prematch and clattering him early helped as well! European player of the year ended up as almost a holding midfielder in an attempt to get away from them!

But Birtles was the almost the absolute epitome of what a lone striker should do.

As the teams ran out onto the pitch:

Keegan (to Larry Lloyd): "you're not going to kick me, are you Larry?"

Lloyd: "oh no Kev. But my mate Burnsie's going to absolutely muller you".

Cue Keegan turning to see Burns, who was at that point removing his false teeth.

If you see the footage, Burns dished-out some proper punishment to the former-Liverpool man, including a lovely early "reducer" right through the back of him, which would earn him first use of the soap in the modern game!

Bit weird that people are still debating if this is a good signing. He's gonna score goals, we can be certain about that.

Also feels odd reading an article by Birtles that isn't stating the obvious and doesn't mention the fact he played for Long Eaton before Clough found him.

It's a wonderful day to be a football fan...
