Having been on the official Forest site forum originally over ten years ago, and then other Forest forums, you get a good understanding of the online community. People voice opinions differently then they would in real life, get bolder, more full of their own intelligence and most of all like to 'call things' and be 'in the know'.
Against this backdrop, IMO, it was why O'Driscoll has proven to be so falsely and undeseredly popular - the online community had been clambouring for YEARS to get him appointed, to the point of obsession. Previously people had been calling for Dave Penney (where is he now). The delight of getting SOD in charge was second to none - this is the man everyone had desired, had somehow elevated to God like football status. All over the internet there were cries of "I wanted him years ago", "he saved us last year" "he always plays stunning football" etc etc. Now, dont get me wrong, SOD is a great man, but he is an average manager. His previous achievements illustrate this. I would rank him as similiar a Gary Johnson or Darren Ferguson.
When you get past the online love in for SOD, and think about it logically and sensibly, we should do ok out of this. McLeish's record if far superior to SOD's. He has managed successfully in another country - where titles are demanded. He has managed his country against some of the best teams in the world. He has got a team promoted from the Championship. He has won a cup in England. Has O'Driscoll done any of this ? His two big teams have been Doncaster and Bournemouth. He might talk the talk, say the right things - but where does that get you ? I was against McLeish at the start - but this could turn out to be a very shrewd piece of business. Lets hope so.
