McLeish has managed at a higher level, that is true. But he also had a more distinguished playing career and so had greater opportunity within the Scottish game to progress. SOD had to start from the more humble managerial surroundings of lower league football and has had great success with both Bournemouth and Doncaster. Every manager has to start somewhere, and it would have been nice to have a manager who became recognished nationally for his achievements with us, rather than trying to pick up a manager who has a had mixed fortunes at other prominent clubs in the British game, tarnished by recent failures.

McLeish has got 22 games - 22 - to get us promoted. Or I've no doubt he will be sacked in the summer (hence no questions about "length of contact" today).

We have 36 points now.

We need - conservatively - at least 82 for a chance at automatic promotion, which means we need 46 points from those 22 matches.

Or 2.1 points per match. Or 13 wins, 7 draws and 2 losses (or some permutation thereof).

Anything less is the lottery of the Playoffs (which, if anywhere, is where we might end up).

As Wes says above, there doesn't seem to be the time for the new manager, coming to a squad he doesn't know, to get them changed to play "his way" whilst still being successful.

It can be done - Reading were 19th this time last year - but there are a lot of settled, competitive squads in the Championship this year.
No they weren't - they were 6th and on 36 points:

McLeish's record if far superior to SOD's. He has managed successfully in another country - where titles are demanded. He has managed his country against some of the best teams in the world. He has won a cup in England. Has O'Driscoll done any of this ?

No, but McClaren has, look how well that went :nowink:
