Evangelos Marinakis Megathread!

I have a djellaba and it is great for keeping your crackers cool when it’s hot.
Didn't we sign him from Olympiacos?

What is this about @GreeksBearingGifts?

Looks like he's announcing something, but he's not! But seems like a good thing regardless.

It's a bit complicated to explain for those not familiar with the arcane power struggle in Greek football. He was elected president of the Superleague (the consortium of first league clubs). The backstory is that AEK and PAOK, who control the Greek Football Federation through a strawman (an interesting figure: a shady lawyer with ties to the far right, including the now defunct neonazi party) tried to impose another club owner as their strawman in the elections, and EM (who preferred an unattached professional at the head of the Superleague) got fired up and decided to run himself. He won over the smaller clubs by promising more money from tv deals, if the rumours are true, and got elected. His main goal and ambition is to augment the jurisdiction of the Superleague consortium, promote a fully professionalized refereeing association under the auspices of the Superleague (referees now are under the control of the diachronically corrupt -in the past EM himself was part of the problem- Greek Football Federation), secure more money, promote better control of clubs' finances in order to avoid debts etc.

On the face of it, it is, as you say, a good thing. For the opposition, it's labelled as corruption.

Seems to me like PAOK especially are a bit of a stain on Greek football. They are constantly throwing mud around, sort yourself out first.

No, it's not one club who are the problem, it's more general than that. Clubs -and club owners- tend to spend more time, resources and energy to this kind of ridiculous power struggle than to actually improving their clubs, football in general, and the product for football's consumers. This is critical in the prolonged financial distress the country is in, and not doing it leads to a vicious circle of corruption, which is extremely difficult to escape (or not to succumb to being part of it).

Mentioned the Olympiakos / Forest link to my cab driver yesterday - in Halkidiki.
He was not at all complimentary toward the big man - assume he was a PAOK fan.
That's for sure. But we don't give a f*** about a club they think is big and our rival with just 3 national leagues in their books. FFS we got out 3rd in 1934!!!!

Paok's fans are delusional and hate olympiacos more than anything else in their life.

Apart from Modesto, another major departure over here was our general manager, lawyer Lina Souloukou, affectionally known as the iron lady. Her contract expired and was not renewed, by mutual consent.

From her very emotional goodbye in social media I learned something that I did not know, that Miltiadis Marinakis (who may soon need his own thread) is unoficially involved at running Olympiacos as well. I thought he only dealt with Forest.

It reads like a puff piece and I don't like puff pieces. But the main thing I wanted to comment upon: an author named James Dostoyevsky? Really?

I dropped it in to see what our Greek friends like you have to say about it. I haven't seen the guy's writings before or even the website to be honest, but it makes a change to someone trying to discredit him all the time
