Evangelos Marinakis Megathread!

It is oh so easy to demand an owner puts his money where his mouth is, and other similar boring platitudes; but, absolutely, Mr. Marinakis has gone all-in with his commitment to Forest, just as he promised.

An owner who clearly has learnt, and has not shied away from big calls.

Hats off to the big lad. He really is a man of his word.

When he first arrived I confess I was uneasy. Some disturbing stories, an absentee owner, perhaps more interested in his main club in Greece and not much sign of change at the CG.

Boy, was I wrong! The guy has been first class in pretty much everything he's done. Some lag before things got going, but when we got into gear, the change has been impressive and when the fans showed our passion last season, he has responded in a most positive way.

Yes.

Let's not forget the season before he came in we finished 21st on goals scored on the last day of the season.

Pretty much every year under Fazza we had gone backwards in terms of position, and obviously that trend had to be reversed.

Pretty much every single appointment as manager has improved the previous situation. Even Hughton as under him we still had one of the best defences in the division, probably more solid than the year before, which was a solid foundation for Cooper to use for attacking (plus he brought in a lot of the key players this season).

One thing is certain, you can't accuse the owner of not backing the playing side.

EM said he would back Coops and he has done more than anyone could of imagined.

He will do everything he can to make us a giant in world football once again. We may not quite make it that far but it won’t be for lack of trying.
I did think the trophies part he referenced at slab square was abit of excited hyperbole at the time but if things go well next season and we begin to establish ourselves who am I to question the great man!

22nd July 2020.

One day shy of 2 years.

Forest 1-4 Stoke.

Playoff dreams in tatters after an almighty capitulation.

And here we are, signing players of this calibre, absolutely remarkable turnaround.

Life is stranger than fiction sometimes.

And in fairness, if we'd actually made the playoffs and gone up then, I'm not sure we'd be in this situation now.

That side was much weaker than what did go up and wouldn't have survived in the PL with those tactics.

At least Cooper tries to play on the front foot which is what you need to get goals, albeit with a firm defence.

It's a common theme with a number of the signings that he was highly influential. I don't know what he says to these players, but wow, he certainly does the business.

Can he take over the ticket office and do something good with it?

Typical forest to win promotion like we did in remarkable circumstances. Imagine if we did get to play off in 2020 but due to covid we wouldn’t of been able to attend semi or final-not having the memory’s of Wembley. Yes we cud of had promotion but not to have the experience of the final wud have been a travesty.

I am a bit of a contrarian I guess, so three points in the midst of much excitement:

1. It is misleading to believe that EM is spending "his" money. Currently he's spending Premier money. He may have to spend his money if things go sour, yes; he could easily have followed the script some of you envisaged, of keeping Premier money in order to have a lot of money to spend when back in the Championship, yes; but it's not like he's selling his ships to finance Lingard's wages. He's making a calculated risk that spending a lot of money upfront that will enable you to stay in the Premier is what the club really needs at the moment. It is ambitious, yes, but it is not charity, it is still a sound football business decision.

2. Given the financial parameters of the Championship, he took that risk again in the Karanka period, unsuccessfully. The fact that the club stayed financially afloat after that failure is something to give him credit for, especially since it meant actually spending his money (on a much lower scale obviously).

3. But if you want to praize him for something, I think putting a proper football decision-making structure in place was much more important than any money spent this summer and any ambition shown. Without this sound foundation, any money spent could have easily been flushed down the toilet. We've seen it time and again in football.

I suppose you could say that it's not his money, but he could have done what most of the American owners do and use the money to offset expenses which would have used their own money. To use all the Sky money to further the expansion of the playing staff and also to make sure finance is available to improve the infrastructure of the club is a sign that the guy is using all the money available in the right way and not just to feather his own nest or reduce his own expenses.
