European Super League

Leaked docs suggesting 16 clubs, including 5 English clubs, are hoping to set up a breakaway European Super League as early as 2020.

Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea would all in such a scenario give the middle finger to English football completely by withdrawing from the Premier League.

I know this one has been in the pipeline for a while but seems to be gathering traction. Personally if it comes to happen I wish the whole venture falls flat on its arse, and then when the clubs go crawling back to their national associations are promptly told to do one.

"Leaked" as in let's put the feelers out and see how much uproar there is/let's let them get used to the idea first before finally announcing it.

Next level to crack the US/Asia markets and line the pockets of the corporates who are making the game their own. It's been coming for a good few years but all the same, it makes me feel sick.

Bastards.

I don't think that the FA could ban any player or manager who defects to the new super-league.
Some law relating to restraint of trade would kick in and the FA would have to capitulate.
Having spoken to several ostrich locally I am, like Sir Robert Mark and his advert for a well known tyre brand, convinced that the European Super League will never, ever come into being.

Within 5 or 10 years they will have different rules anyway. Gone will be the familiar goalposts. They will be replaced with a Y-bar, there will be line markings every 10 yards and only one player on each team will kick the ball. That will help sell the league in the US. :)

Another thought: the top 6 teams all have enough players on their books tho be able to put a squad into a European Super League, and still be able to field a top 6 Premiership side.
So, the breakaway may not be a breakaway, merely a different level of player being taken out of the Premiership and into a new elite.
As a footnote - is there really a top 6?
On current form there seems to be a top 5 and then Man City.

This idea is floated every few years and usually it's to exert pressure on a governing body to change something that the elite clubs want changing.

In order of annual turnover it goes:

Man U
.
Man C
Arsenal
.
.
Chelsea
Liverpool
.
Spurs
.
.
.
The rest around 100m pa

That is fine regarding turnover, but I don't think turnover is the be all and end all, or else Man City wouldn't be walking away with things, it would be ManUre.

Yes, I want disagreeing with your point that Man City have everything going for them currently. It wouldn’t surprise me if they overtake Man U in terms of finance in a few years either.

That's all it is, sadly. Man C and PSG were penalised for breach of FFP. This will be one of the reasons the toys came out.

They won't actually sod off. Rules will be changed to further suit them, and domestic football will get a little bit worse. It's a tried and tested strategy that's been working for nearly thirty years

Mate of mine lives in a traditional red part of Manchester, he isn’t much of a football man but his dad and brothers all support United. His lad is 6 now and supports city and more kids at his school now support city than United. The tide seems to be turning even within Manchester which was totally unthinkable even 5 years ago. Despite the money etc.. I still have a soft spot for city after the shit they have had over the years living in Utd shadow. I think it’s hilarious. Chelsea, Liverpool, Utd hate them all. Give me city dominating that lot any day.

Do you remember that banner at United counting the time since city had won a trophy. Who is laughing now *****?

Indeed. I have a soft spot for City too. An old friend of mine has supported them since the Malcolm Allison days. For years, I was the lucky fan who followed a successful club and he was the long suffering supporter of a club who perpetually grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. How things have changed in the last decade! I am delighted for him (sometimes), and he still can’t quite believe it.

Soft spot for City here as well. Manchester is nice and I'm an Oasis fan.

I'm not sure that's the case this time. Man City and PSG's punishment for breaking FFP regulations was hardly punitive in the big scheme of things.

This is purely about cold, hard cash, a reported £440m a year, every year, with no chance of relegation within the first 20 years.

Those kind of figures are bound to turn peoples heads. Unsurprisingly, this debacle is being spearheaded by an American entrepreneur, home of the World Series of Baseball, played purely by teams in North America

With the breakdown of normal subscription based viewing platforms, ie Sky on the telly and a move to Internet based services it was only a matter of time before this issue raised its head once more.

Does it have legs? Probably not at this moment, but within the next decade the established European Leagues will be broken as the "beautiful game" finally goes global.

Its a marketing managers wet dream!!

The World series is so called because it was created and sponsored by a newspaper called "The World", not because of any geographical pretension.

Man City are plotting to join Man United as self-elected founders of European football.

They're hardly a much better option these days.

Well, our American friends are brilliant at inventing sports nobody else plays, and then proclaiming themselves „World Champions“ in them.

It’s still shit

All American sport is shit.
American Football - pouffes not hard enough to play proper rugby
Basketball - the game for those with a short attention span
Baseball - please: it's just not cricket
Ice-hockey - small goals, small puck; unwatchable.
American Soccer - not even a sport!

I generally agree, I can't stand American sports and the way it's so commercialized. The fact adverts are so glorified is just bizarre to me. The main talking points from American Football is always the half time show FFS!

The fact no countries have really taken up their Sports properly apart from one or two says it all really.
