Blackstock shows how low we have sunk as a club.
Lauded by many as still a viable player and yet is not good enough for the worst team in the championship.
Also telling he is the highest paid player at Rotherham.

We have lauded crap players and paid them too much for too long.

Time to break the cycle. We are 20th in the league and yet have a disproportionately high wage bill.
Get rid of the free loaders and bring in some quality, young hungry players whilst promoting the best academy players.
We can't keep giving expensive contracts to overrated crap players.

Actually, Blackstock embodied a major shift forward for our club as we moved from being a League 1 outfit for almost half a decade (both seasons either side of the 3 down there) to almost a Prem one thanks to the genuis of Billy Davies.

Now what should have happened is we should have built on that together core. We should have fueled that "us against them" ethos, and rewarded the likes of Morgan, Blackstock etc. for their contributions to such a turnaround. That way their both contracted to the club so can't leave for threpance, and we continue to build the ethos that if you put in to the club you get rewarded.

By tearing all that apart we created a situation where every player who was part of that now looked out for themselves more, as REAL freeloaders ala Miller & Derbyshite join the club on far more and contribute far less.

It's no coincidence that pretty much everything that has happened since has seen most managers/players out for just themselves at the club, as that's the culture which the McClaren era & appointment left us with.

Players like Blackstock or Cohen should be rewarded and looked after if they've contributed to the club, simply so it builds that togetherness again. Trouble is since McClaren got his paws in the wages rocketed and that made life far harder. Fawaz should have addressed that earlier, and he looks to be doing so now, but that's where the healing process ended and rot started again.

Hopefully McPharland & Warburton can find a nice balance of quality & wages, whilst building a great togetherness again. Warburton says he wants to make every day as enjoyable as possible for the players & staff, and that is massive. Plus most Rangers players won't be on more than 15k/wk, so any which join him will hopefully come on sensible wages too.

Bringing in cheap, young, hungry players whilst promoting academy prospects is fantastic in theory, but we've seen time and time again it's not compatible with Forest fans demand for instant success. When Doughty opted for this approach there was constant uproar that he wasn't bringing in top players. Also, with the current state of football any quality young players aren't going to be especially cheap.

There needs to be a balance

Completely agree, I think once we've found suitable replacements, let the others go.
Fryatt? He's been replaced 3 times over, get rid.
Cohen? At left back Pinillos, and as a CM could Matty Cash be the new alternative?
I'm pretty sure we'd be willing to let Vlad go too should an offer come in, I expect he's on decent wages.
Hobbs is a valuable member of the side, but perhaps the same should be applied, find a suitable up and coming replacement for the first team.

Zac Clough was a fantastic purchase, lower leagues, which I've been trying to hammer home for the past few years but hopefully we don't have a manager that'll scout the Finish lower tiers, and will instead look at the League 1 and League 2 teams.

He also cost £3 million and I can't imagine has come here on a low wage. Britt cost us £5 million from the lower league and look at the wages he's on.

People talk about the lower leagues as if it's filled with incredible young players who will never break, and command only minor transfer fees and don't want paying much in wages. Signing quality from the lower leagues can, and often is, incredibly expensive, because like players from any division, if they are good enough - lots of teams want them. You can find bargains, but really what you need is a balance and to sign players on the basis that they are the right fit for your squad regardless of where they come from.

Dex had a nasty injury that he never really recovered from. We've had many players in the last 10 years that have had nasty injures that they've never recovered fully from, it's been one of the significant reasons for our downfall.

Surprised Rov'rum are so surprised!

Thing is he WAS a viable player for a long time, as part of the most successful team we've had since we got back to this level. His partnership with Earnie was one of the better strike partnerships we've had in recent memory.

Zach Clough was worth spending a bit of money on.
Young. Had demonstrated his ability at championship level. Still learning and improving.

We need to shop in a similar market to what Warburton did with Brentford. Players are out there with reasonable fees and wages.
It is essential we start doing this if we want to survive as a club.

When we first bought him maybe.
But that huge 4 year contract renewal. Was he worth that?

Did Doughty have the talent to promote from the academy?
Don't remember too many as alternatives to buying players in. That option looks more viable now with Lascelles, Darlow, Osborn, Brereton, Burke, Cash, Smith etc all having come through in the last 3 or 4 years. Shame Fawaz has sold so many of them as we had the basis of a competitive championship side there.

We could of got Bogle for 1mil on low wages, which would only of cost us around the same as Mccormack and Bogle has done ok in a poor Wigan side.

There are players out there that won't cost too much but they are always a risk, Clough only cost so much as he is a well known youngster who has played at this level.

Bogle is a great example. Amazed he went for as little as £1m as a goal scoring striker all be it in Lg 2.

Not was HE worth it, but was rewarding someone who helped save the club from relegation 3 times, and give us 2 top 6 seasons worth it?

Absolutely.

On one hand you expect players to give their all for the club and not be as ruthless/selfish, then on the other you want to treat them like nothing but mathematical assets and trim any remote fat we have constantly.

The club culture will never change whilst players remain nothing but an asset.

Anyone begrudging Dex of what he earned is crackers. He's one of the few who HAS earned it.

If you want us to keep treating players like nothing more than financial equations, expect them to do just that back to the club.

That's true, but I'd rather spend that £3m on someone who will actually do a good job for us. We've blown millions on players we've not even got half a season out of and have been complete waste of money.

Anyone who says any organization which can't afford to reward someone who's saved/made it millions simply has no perspective.

What's saving us from relegation 3 tines been worth? More than Dex's wage that's for sure.

You want players who care? Then you create that culture and reward those who did.
