We've let a load of players go out on loan because Nuno wants a small squad. Probably paying most of their wages. Now we've had 2 goalkeepers on the bench the last 2 games and have barely got enough players to pick a team on Wednesday.

Worth mentioning that 2 keepers on the bench is new to us, but isn't all that uncommon in the days of 9 player benches.

Indeed, Bournemouth also had 2 keepers on the bench in the same game.

The circumstances on Wednesday are pretty unique to be fair. Two suspended and three ineligible, so five back on Saturday. Then another three back the following Saturday.

Why the klopp the PL doesn't just say if a side has 3 call ups the match can be rearranged i have no idea. We had this in L1 ffs

Because the TV deals won't want matches they intended to show postponed late on, and because the League won't want fixture congestion if they can avoid it.

We only needed to call matches off while in League One because it's a shitty league that doesn't have many international players in it - and so matches are routinely scheduled during the designated international windows.

The call-up issue is only a factor when AFCON or the Asian Cup take place outside of the "normal" international breaks. Ultimately part of the problem here is that we built a squad that would be disproportionally affected.

all valid, but it still sucks.

As it stands we could probably have managed without our CIV players, but not the rest. In reality that would probably only have needed Brentford and maybe Arsenal to be called off.

The African players are usually good though and also much cheaper than the UEFA ones. We couldn't have got a striker as good as Taiwo for 17m who is European likewise a defender like Boly or Niakhate (even though Boly was born in France) which helps with FFP.

Seems we can't win really.

Tbh I suspect even in League One with the "3 players called up" rule - if we'd had 6 players away at AFCON back then, they'd have baulked at letting us cancel an entire months worth of games because of it.

Seem to remember Niakhate was French when we bought him. Aurier, Boly, Kouyate we were only thinking of survival last year. Probably not the best strategy to double down with Sangare and Aina this year though. Though not sure Aina was even guaranteed to be selected when we signed him.

Wood injury for 2 months…. As I said we left ourselves extremely light in the attacking 4 options and getting rid of aguilera was a poor move. Origi is gonna have to stay now. Square pegs in round holes again going ahead. 1 winger and 1 CAM short at least after Jan.

I've got a fair bit of sympathy for what a task it was to build a whole new squad basically when we got promoted.

But still being weak at both full backs after four premier league transfer windows is a hell of a failure.

I think right back is just about strong enough with Aina, Williams and Montiel, probably in that order. Trouble is Aina is probably our best left back as well, with Toffolo a decent back up. Then there’s Nuno Tavares. 🤔

So yeah, right back OK, left back weak.

Laryea... I mean, I guess that shows we've trimmed the squad, if we're chucking him and 5 keepers in.

We've basically named every 'over 21' that's still at the club, apart from Arter.
