Cohen and Lichaj

A while ago (shortly after Davies' 2nd spell started), I came on this forum and suggested that Cohen should be moved to left back given our plethora of centre midfielders and Harding's less than solid defending..

To cut a long story short I was chastised by the regular posters for a pointless thread as Cohen is a midfielder and Harding was more than capable.. end of..

I have always rated Cohen at LB and after seeing him play regularly at LB I think we now have arguably the best full backs in the Championship and possibly our best LB for many years! The defence, especially the full backs were superb against Watford and along with Hobbs and Wilson put in one of the best defensive displays I've seen in years..Both offered attacking threat... both excellent on the ball and more importantly against two dangerous wingers, very solid at the back.

A striker short of automatic? possibly but I don't think we'll need to score that many goals to win games this season. I think we might find 1 is enough.

Was it really necessary to hold onto a "I told you so" for six plus months (and create a thread all about it)?

Cohen seems to have improved a lot defensively. Don't forget the role of Wilson in it though. Helps having Wilson next to him, instead of Collins.

Not just because I support Forest, but I think we have the best defence in the league, and if I were part of the team I'd feel so comfortable having Wilson/Hobbs as the centre backs.

Cohen had a bad start to the game yesterday and tackled like a midfielder caught out. He improved after a couple of chats with the ref but a good full back gets their territorial pissings in early. He should have this ironed out by October, I imagine.

This sounds unlikely, purely on the basis that virtually none of the regular posters on here would describe Harding as 'more than capable' of anything. He's one of the most hated players in the squad on these forums. In fact if you dig up the Official Nottingham Forest Scapegoat of The Month calender, you'll see multiple Harding entries. The criticism of Harding on here was so fierce when he was playing regularly that I actually think he became kind of underrated.

Regarding Cohen, i'm pretty sure he moved to LB as soon as Davies took over, so he was presumably already playing LB when you made this suggestion :/ I thought he looked utterly dreadful at the position during his brief cameo there under McClaren so I had my doubts. He grew into the role in no time though under Davies, and I was very keen to see him stay there this season and not move back to midfield.

By 'chastised' I imagine it means one or two folk disagreed which is par for the course on a forum.

Bet one of them was Tutts.

It does look like, given how parsimonious our defence is, we might not need a 20-goal striker after all (though I wouldn't object if Fawaz gave Billy the money to sign one...). That's a good feeling; with Cohen - Hobbs - Wilson - Lichaj in place (and Jara in the wings), I get the feeling we aren't going to ship many goals this season. So long as we get some goals regularly (and Reid and Lansbury could easily score a handful from midfield), I won't worry at all.

In games like yesterday's, natural finishers turn one point into three.

LTLF regular posters chastise everything, included conflicting opinions that tend to render their chastising hypocritical.

Hell even this post will be chastised.

But in reference to your post, Cohen is the best left back we've had since Pearce.

And I love how they are playing at wingbacks at the minute. Our back 5 Cohen, Darlow, Wilson, Lichaj and Hobbs are the beast in the division and no matter how much shit they get their back ups aren't bad either.

Defensively we are solid. Our midfielders and strikers make their jobs more difficult by giving the ball away a lot. (Although Lichaj gave away a shocker yesterday too)

What if it's only mildly chastised? Is that still classed as being chastised? When does chastised really mean chastised?

Problem was in the past we missed Cohens engine in midfield, less of an issue now but I still rate him there.

Probably. And I still only think he's doing a decent job there rather than being the second coming of Psycho.

'Our best left back for years' unless you include loans basically put him in competition with Keith Foy and Gareth Edds.

Interesting how Mr Hindsight entitles his thread 'Cohen and Lichaj.'

Number of mentions of 'Lichaj' : 0.

I have been saying since the end of BD's first stint that Cohen would be a LB.

And I got chastised for it - by many who would now like to sweep it under the carpet.

They know jack shite but are loud mouthed on the forums....... don't worry mate...... same wavelength.

Next they will be telling you there is a media blackout, an Umbongo, its not Adidas, credit card has bounced, players not being paid or some other total BS :)

Cohen couldn't handle Anya on sunday. Out of our back four , it has to be said that he was the weakest link. I was half expecting him to be send off in the match considering how he started - committing a foul within a minute but the ref was quite lenient and he got away with it until like the fourth time he fouled , then he got a yellow.
There will be a few other wingers in this league he will have to face that will be just as tricky - i'm thinking we are still short of a proper left back cover because harding will never be suitable as a backup.

Gotta agree with you there! His second foul was worthy of a second so he got quite lucky! I dont think he is the best LB, I think he is just a very good player, who gives 100% which makes him good enough to be there, and I would not like to see the team without him, even if it is at LB so I would keep him there, but he did get caught out, and will. But he does give us something going forward and is adequate enough at LB, but if we get to the prem, surely he wont be kept there?

And OP - wow....really? I once said you will never beat Des Walker, and you know what, you never did. But i didnt start a thread about it! But to latch on to yours, I told you so!
