No, you get a polite reminder to actually understand what you're buying into ;)

And yes, it was a while back now.

That said, it was heartening to see kids not old enough to even remember Cloughie being alive eagerly chucking cash into the collection buckets - clearly a few kids are being educated appropriately...

... I think the sad fact is that a huge proportion of Forest fans, and probably football fans in general, are quite happy to pontificate about what should or shouldn't be done, but when it comes to the crunch aren't prepared to either strive to make it happen, or back or support those people that do.

Like you say, you would hope that at a single game you should easily be able to raise a big chunk of the total - there were extensive bucket collections outside the City Ground at at least 3 games... I've no idea exactly how much was raised by these means, but I know a number of the other initiatives such as donated memorabilia from the likes of Stuart Pearce and Roy Keane, the Clough Aid gig, and other big one-off events made up the bulk of the fund.  Not to mention the final £10k which was, a little bit cynically I might add, stumped up by Forest and the Council between them.

The sad fact of the matter is fans are prepared to sing that Brian Clough's a football genius, but when it came to putting hands in pockets, stats bear out that the majority abstained.
well put mate..i have had a bit fun tonight (using hear hear quite a bit) but the proof is in the pudding...lads who watched brian's team should and i hope would put their hands in their pockets....he should(and peter taylor) have a statue somewhere, anywhere in nottingham.....say what you like about middlesboro(smog monsters etc) but if any forest fan gets the chance check out albert park(a young clough in all his glory) if they can do it why can't forest?

Yes, Boro's statue looks fantastic.

The North East is traditional a more passionate area though. Collection for Gazza?? I would not pi** on him - :wanker:

I think a generation of Forest fans have been lost, this twinned with high ticket prices etc caused many fans to side step fund raising opportunities? :(

I would like to see a statue of Clough at The City Ground. It's very dissapointing (to me at least) that there isn't going to be one. However, that said, we do have an entire stand named after him. It's a good stand at that, the name Brian Clough is well advertised (for want of a better expression)

Now, I think the Main Stand should:

a) Be given a bloody good makeover

b) Be linked with the Bridgford and Trent ends

c) Be renamed the Peter Taylor Stand. Why the chuff not?

The King/Queen street location is not ideal as far as I'm concerned, it seems as though they're trying too hard to get it into the market square without actually putting it in the market square. I of course might be wrong, but that's how it seems to me.

It seems wrong to me that they aren't placing the statue at the City Ground. A shame.

A word on the Boro statue - which is indeed fantastic (I went to the unveiling, which was very moving)... they actually took the same length of time fundraising as the Nottingham guys did, it started sooner.

I presume they must've recruited the sculptor earlier as the time from cash raised to statue in place was pretty damn quick.

I would recommend seeing it though, it's fantastic.  Photos I took during the unveiling day

The bottom line for me is that Clough, or fondness for Clough, should not be a competition between ourselves, the Sheep, Boro, Sunderland, whoever - we should be united in our affections for him, and frankly, the more statues of BC dotted around the place the better as far as I'm concerned!

Hear Hear!

I couldn't agree more. The idea that Britain might one day be dotted with statues of the great man pleases me no end!

As I've mentioned a few times before, for me the ideal siting is neither King/Queen street or the City Ground, but directly in the fountain type thing on Market Square.

Building the statue so that it looks as though he is taking a stroll on water would be fantastic, and fittingly central to Nottingham.

If a one off game was staged at the City Ground to generate funds for a Statue at the ground, I'm pretty confident the funds required could be raised in 90 mins.

This is actually a very valid point. You mentioned earlier that £100k was raised from the BC trophy game, double that could have been raised for a statue fund game.

They could have done an 'old Forest v New Forest' type game, and charged £40 a ticket for it.

I'm sure loads of players would have been involved. We could have seen Stan and Nigel up front together, showing Wes Morgan what it's like to play against real strikers.

Des Walker could've shown Tyson what real pace is, and Psycho could've given Grant Holt a reason to hit the deck, Roy Keane could've taught McGugan a thing or two about tackling in the middle of the park.

I'm sure short appearances from the likes of Trevor Francis, Martin O'Neil and John McGovern would've been enough to pack out the City Ground.

I imagine most of these guys would've been up for the game.

I really wish this had happened. The money for the statue would have been raised inside ten minutes, with the rest going to a charity or somehing.

I think that was Ali he said that about :)

Having just checked on that excellent BBC tribute to Cloughie (broadcast a couple of weeks after his death) I can confirm that in actual fact, Mr Foghorn is correct, that quote was about Frank Sinatra. :)

He may well have used it with Ali as well of course.

What an excellent idea of Derby's. In fact, while they're at it, they should also errect a statue of Sam Longson, as a constant reminder of the man who drove Clough and Taylor out of the club and robbed them of the success they would inevitably have had under Clough.

What would be the point of having the statue at the City Ground if the plan is to knock it down and build flats on it in the long run anyway? Moving the statue would be the only option in that situation and that feels quite inappropriate to me as a statue should be a lasting tribute both in sentiment and physical location.

How about renaming the Main Stand the "Peter Taylor stand" :)

I think a lot of our younger fans forget his contribution and only ever remember Mr Clough's.

It's a good point. Brian was never as successsful as he was when Peter was alongside him. It was like Morecambe and Wise without Morecambe or the Krankies without the little schoolboy one. Imagine being married to the schoolboy Krankie. You'd feel like a gay pedo the whole time.

Nice short link

Norris?   :D

Did we not have his services for 17 years?

Why oh why do we not have a statue at the ground!!

I should imagine thsat not knowing if we're going to still BE at the same ground in a few years time is a factor in play.
