Cardiff Dec. 29th: Who's goin?!

So it looks like both games that line up with my vacation time are away, Cardiff and Charlton. I'd like to do both but unfortunately my travel partner this time is a filthy arse fan. That means I'll have to pay 347 bucks to see a team I f***ing hate play another team I don't care about, surrounded by fans too stupid to realize they're being ripped off just to watch the only team to never actually be promoted limp their way into 4th place for another season. Anyway, I know it's only June, but does anyone have their sights set on a trip to Wales or is that the English equivalent of wandering into Alabama just to count how many teeth the populace share amongst themselves?*

*Sorry in advance to all Welsh people and arse fans.

Cardiff is a lovely Capital City and having lived there for some time I'd say it's every bit as nice as Nottingham. Usual rules apply though, football stadium is in a ropier bit of the city (where you'd want it) and Forest fans think the whole place is crap.

Book a hotel early though, it's very popular over Xmas.

Got it. "Ropier" as in Compton-ish or more like Tottenham?

I agree, spent a weekend in Cardiff a few months ago and really enjoyed it.

I'll be there - Have family nearby who we'll be visiting around that time for Christmas anyway, so fits in perfectly! Nice city centre, agree that the stadium is in "ropier" area though, not much around there so probably stay in the centre as close to kick off as you can

I've always said Wales would be a nice place if it weren't for the Welsh... Same as France...

I've lived in France.

There aren't that many Welsh people there to spoil it??

Oh, there's much worse parts of Cardiff than Ninian Park Road, I used to have to walk around that area at night for a living and I was always fine... the perfect cheap place would be here: http://www.hostelworld.com/hostelde...ackpackers/Cardiff/23002?sc_sau=sfab&sc_pos=6 which is on the correct side of the city centre and taff for the footy, a short walk from the station and the lovelier bits of town, too.

Hotel wise anything within pissing distance of the castle should be fine, there's also options 'down the bay' (don't bother really, it's mainly arseholes) and t'other side of city centre will doable too, if a little further to walk to cool stuff.

My favourite pub for ale and general awesomeness is here: http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/city-arms-cardiff but don't bother wearing colours.

I go to Cardiff once a year to mark GCSE exam papers.
It is just great for a night out.
You can sit and watch every hen party in Wales go by.

I shall no doubt be going to this game, if for no other reason than to practice my smattering of Welsh on the locals. Of course, being from South Wales none of them will have a clue about what I'm saying anyway. Iechyd da!

Excellent info! I fear my Americaness getting me in trouble more than I do colors or rough neighborhoods and whatnot. We Yanks tend to come off as loudmouth assholes, especially those of us considered as such even by our fellow countrymen...

I once met one of your compatriots in a Las Vegas elevator (lift). I think we talked about Swansea being promoted but I can't be certain as the words that came out of his mouth were 90 percent unintelligible.

And for everyone else, thanks for the tips! Keep this thread going and when anyone sets definite plans, post it here. That will help me figure out what we will ultimately end up doing.

Steady on TH, I'm a bona fide Englishman! Just spend a lot of time in Wales. Who'd of thought that you could take Welsh speaking classes in Derby, must be the connection with sheep shagging

I think Alpha's covered pretty much everything. Accommodation will probably be key, as it's likely to fill up quickly that time of year, at least at the cheaper end of the market. I used to live 15min walk from the stadium, it's not too bad, but used to keep my colours covered for the walk.

Don't know if I'll be able to make it this year, rather inconveniently that's the due date for our first child. I reckon it'd be OK as it's only a 45min drive, the wife isn't too sure.

Re: Cardiff Dec. 28th: Who's goin?!

So the game has been shifted to Dec 29th now, much to the consternation of many of you. However, I can now go as it no longer conflicts with the unspeakable game on the 28th I am being forced to attend. Anyway, we booked our flight today and well be in Cardiff for the match then at Charlton on Jan 2nd as well. In between, we'll be in Nottingham for new years eve. I'm sure we'll get a mob together for dinner and drinks at some locale so if you wanna meet/remeet me/the new guys then get in on it! Festive times are a ' comin...

You'd be guttered if you missed the birth of your kid for a game of footie.

Unless we battered them 3-0.
