Appreciate the write up. Great points.

Firstly, I do realise that goalkeeper is very important. As is every position. But my thoughts on why I think goalkeeper is least important (or did, you are all swaying me).

All goalkeepers at high level play are exceptional. Most are between 75% and 60% save percentage, which is remarkable. The difference between dropping down from a top GK to a mid level goalkeeper doesn't impact their Goalkeeping ability that much in my opinion.

Also, the better your team, the less you need them. If you can bring your team level, they face less shots and their weaker shotstopping ability isn't as important. You also thenadd the attacking elements an improved outfield provides as well as the ability to not concede.

Certain teams use their goalkeeper as an extension of the outfield, and in that I definitely see the value, but for the rest of the league I just think the level is too good for it to matter that much.

I know thats disagreeing with the great man, ill tell myself times are different now so as to not scold myself too much.

Finding the original paper has been incredibly frustrating. I did find the relevant metric (goals-added-over-positional-average) (sic.) but still looking for the paper.

Still my search has uncovered this summary on goalkeepers with standout performances for the 19/20 season (as evaluated by analytics.) Notice the bit about distribution to the wingbacks. I think our Dane might also be a fan of analytics.

Dean Henderson

Yet another English goalkeeper makes our shortlist and Gareth Southgate does have a selection headache in this position for the coming Euros. Henderson’s performance has been crucial to Sheffield United’s impressive first campaign in the top flight since promotion. The Blades have been known to play using their wing-backs and Henderson’s distribution has been key to the side playing out from the back. He has also been excellent between the sticks, making world-class saves to back up the solid Sheffield defence. It remains to see whether he will be called back by Manchester United but he has already started putting the pressure on de Gea, who although had a decent season statistically, was still heavily criticised for his errors at the back.

This is a great article thanks for posting. I knew Henderson could belt the ball but I didn't realise he had accuracy like this on his long kicks. I often watch Pickford and think to myself the reason he's England's number 1 is that laser-guided long kick and the stats in that article suggest, in that season, Henderson's was as good as, if not better than Pickfords. It's a huge weapon if needed, especially with the pace we have up front with Johnson and the holdup ability if Davis or similar is signed.

Was amazing when he was with Sheffield United and would be great with us I am sure. Samba situation is what it is and as a fellow American would love Ethan to prove himself worthy of the number one spot but don't think their yet especially in the Prem. Come on down Dean.

100% agree.

GKs in the modern game are integral to how a team attacks.

I really hope he signs.

It seems like he is gonna sign, it is just down to the buy out clause at the moment.
I would be amiable to a 20m buy out clause with a 40-50m buy back clause that would allow ManU to feel a bit more secure about the deal.

God, I love this transfer window.

This is all accepted, but depends on the quality of the opposing team too, obviously in "today's" top division with the likes of Man City etc trying to improve and equal the whole team to these standards at once would be near impossible, so initial steps are taken ?

More chance of Nicky Weaver liking this post 👍

Pearce liked goalkeepers so much he had two on the field at once 🤣

FWIW the Henderson eye test at Blunts may be swayed by the fact that De Gea had the worst season of his life.

The stats back it up, but I remember my Man U supporting mates screaming for a recall cos El Gato had a howler of a season.

Yeah that’s about right. Average wage in the PL is about 60k nowadays, so I imagine that our top earners will be on around that from now on, probably with relegation wage drop clauses.

It would then be interesting to see what we offered samba in terms of a pay rise, not knocking Henderson his a great keeper but something does not sit right in the way we are treating samba. If we are prepared to smash the wage structure to get Henderson and offered him a lot less he has a legitimate grievance.

How’s it risky? If we get relegated we won’t buy him and we will bring someone else in.
Then it's a risk of getting in someone shitter then samba. This is all down on the assumption that samba would have stayed with a better contract

Why do fans sometimes not see the bigger picture? Maybe Samba was offered plenty but realised his family still living in France takes is toll and wants to be back with them? Ever thought of that? Not always the simple mindset of money you know, players are human!!

Theres no "legitimate" grievance about it. I have no doubt Samba will have been offered improved terms and I would be certain that another 3 years here at Forest would have made him a very rich man (if he isn't already). It would also put him in the shop window in the biggest league in the world so if the lad had a stormer next season he would have plenty of suitors to choose from if we/he decided to part ways. Thats assuming he plays well of course.
My guess is this was a ham-fisted attempt to turn the heat up on the negotiations and its gone down like a bag of cold sick with the Forest brass, who probably feel hes not shown them the loyalty and respect they deserve. I'm also pretty sure that there were already low to medium grade anxieties about his on the pitch behaviour and this affects how people conduct negotiations.

In other words hes shithousing in the negotiations in a similar way to on the pitch. Its a sorry situation....

The Athletic reporting no option to buy.

Edit: not true apparently - no such story in the athletic.

Do you have a link I don't see anything on the app?
The latest update is here: https://theathletic.com/news/nottingham-forest-taiwo-awoniyi-talks/VY8Mzh00FJJA/

Which doesn't say anything about no option:
Nottingham Forest are also hoping to strengthen their goalkeeping department before competing in the Premier League for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Manchester United's Dean Henderson could move to the City Ground on loan with an option to buy.

Forest's current No 1 Brice Samba has informed the club he will not be signing a new contract and intends to leave.

It is understood Samba is interested in a move back to France with Lens, having helped Forest secure their long-awaited return to the Premier League.

Forest have since been looking at alternatives with Henderson, 25, an option, initially on loan.

The option to buy doesn't benefit United at all really. I just can't see what incentive it gives United and without that it won't be included.
