Lyle James Alfred Taylor

What's Taylor done wrong here exactly?

His contract ran out, he didn't want to sign an extension, what's the issue? He is 30 years old, played mostly in the lower leagues likely on a modest wage, this is likely going to be his last big move where he can cash in a bit.

Players should always look after number one. If he would have done his ACL in these last few games, I doubt the same ones labeling him as a bad egg would be wanting us to take a punt on him on a free this summer...

For what it is worth, I rate Taylor, contrasting skill set to Grabben which we sometimes need. Thumbs up from me if we pull it off.

What I didn't like about it, was he refused to play in the 2 games he was still contracted for.

Why would you want to play someone who you know isn't going to give you 100%, consciously or subconsciously?

Like I say, when you look at the clubs he has played for, he has worked his way up the football ladder and fair play to him. I'm not going to begrudge him wanting one last big move in his career where he might be able to earn a few quid for he is set for life.

We're still playing Watson as a our captain and cornerstone, and rumour is he's wanting to go back to London in the summer...

Bottom line is he refused to play in games he was contracted for, anything outside of that is dressing.

I couldnt give a f*** personally, but he should be waiting until he's out of contract before doing his own thing.

God forbid him being honest? He could easily have said his knee was causing him pain still and sat it out. Instead he went to Bowyer and told him straight up if he did play, he would be playing not to get injured so wouldn't be able to give his all. From the interviews I have heard, Bowyer seems to have accepted that and doesn't blame him, so I really don't know what there is to see.

I understand your point, and I can see why he/people would think like that. It is his best ever opportunity to secure a really solid financial future for himself.

I think it's just the bit that he couldn't give his all for 2 games, to help keep his side up. I know the risks involved, I just think personal pride should take over a bit there, that's what I didn't like about it.

Covid... etc plays no part. Otherwise should players who are going out of contract refuse to play towards the end of their deal? When is the optimum time between risk/reward of injury/next contract?

I think can I understand both sides. Mine personal opinion is he should have at the least offered himself and done his absolute best for the two games.

I can appreciate the flip side to it, but I do think you have to look at his history and the clubs he has played at. I don't doubt he has a few quid in the bank, but I don't think he is a multimillionaire like some players his age. This is an opportunity to set himself and his family up for life. If they season would have played out as normal, I think he would have played out his contract and there wouldn't be an issue. With everything that has gone off, I don't blame him for looking after himself and his family before his club who have done very well out of him.

In a shocking twist, the player who bailed on his contract is praised for his honesty.

Like I said, I couldnt give a shit, but I sometimes marvel in how we conspire to absolve footballers generally. How much was he paid over that contract I wonder.

We took Grabban in after he reportedly ‘downed tools’ and that worked out alright.
I think we have a culture now that allows us to take a risk on bad apples, because if they don’t fit in or buy in, they won’t get to play.

I am in no doubt this happens up and down the country, but it doesn't get reported because said player has 'picked up a knock' in training. I bet with hindsight he wishes he would have gave them 45min, said he knee was painful and sat out the two games.

I'm not absolving him of anything, but I can understand why he has done what he has done and can at least appreciate he has been honest with the club and the manager about it. Charlton had the chance to move him on in January when he told them he wouldn't sign a new contract, they decided not to, kept it and it has backfired on them.

This is the key thing IMO. Charlton refused to move him on when they had the chance and he wanted it - why should he owe them any favours?

In reality, from what I've learned from talking to footballers, everyone is as bad as each other. Clubs will f*** players off at a moments notice and leave their careers to rot; why shouldn't players have the same cut throat attitude?

I don’t think that we will sign Taylor.
He’s 30 years old and he won’t want to sit on the bench and play second fiddle to Grabban in a team that plays mainly one up front.
It would make more sense to sign an up and coming youngster like the Scottish lad, who has the same characteristics but would be happy to bide his time.

Could be argued that we would be ideal as there is no direct replacement/competition to Grabban.

He said a deal with Brentford was done and dusted, (last summer) would he play every week there? he wouldn't have to move home I guess!

after watching that video, It's easier to understand players stance on things. Charlton clearly trying to make a mug of him.

Just a second thought on this - Forest are just as bad as other clubs for this. Zach Clough, for example, should have been released years ago but for some reason (which may be the player, it may be on the club) hasn't been and he's just been left to rot his career away. Look at how we handled the Adomah situation - we can't say 'Lyle Taylor is a prick for not playing for Charlton' when Adomah wanted to play for Cardiff but Forest took him away from that because it benefitted the club's promotion aspirations.

All is fair in love, war and football business.

I'm sure Forest would have loved to have released Zach Clough, but the player himself wouldn't want to do that without the rest of his lucrative contract being paid up. If he was that bothered about his career rotting away, he would negotiate his contract termination or at least push harder for a loan move away to get some regular football. The way his career has gone is completely on him IMO.

As for Adomah, I'm sure Forest would have let him stay at Cardiff if they weren't in direct competition with us. But Amomah is still getting paid at the end of the day and it doesn't make a lot of difference to his career in the long run.

At the end of the day, both Zach Clough and Albert Adomah are both currently being paid handsome sums of money to sit on their arses and play their PlayStation 4's all day and are set for life regardless of what happens from here on out, so I don't really have sympathy for either.

I'm not sure where all this 'the clubs are as bad as the players' stuff comes from. Most clubs are losing money and require a wealthy benefactor to prop them up, whereas your average Championship footballer earns as much (if not more) in a week or two than most people on here probably earn in a year. Players by far have the better end of the deal.

He'll think he can displace Grabban, or at least be part of a Sabri rotation game depending on who we're facing.

But I think his main priority, given his age, and career to date, is securing a deal that is best for his personal finances, regardless of what that means for his on pitch game time. If we've agreed a three year deal for him at £15k a week he's going to jump on that.

Think he'll want a lot more than £15k a week. He'll no doubt get it too.

Especially if we got promoted.

Easily. He can easily get £25k (or more) a week from a parachute payment club this summer (especially as there will be no transfer fee involved). No chance of him accepting £15k a week, he'd easily be one of our highest paid players if he comes here whilst we are still in the Championship.

£20k a week for 3 years is about £3m. Given his age that sort of money in a transfer fee would be a good buy. All in with wages would be a no brainer. Can’t believe bigger (parachute) fish won’t be in.

I think some of you are overestimating Taylor's reputation.

He's scored 11 goals at Championship level his entire career, and spent most of it flitting between leagues 1 & 2.

He's a really handy free transfer which I'd like to see us sign, but I think sides relegated from the Prem will be looking at bigger fish tbh. Their objective is to get straight back up, I don't think they're gonna entrust that to a chap who's 30 and would have nosebleeds at being in the top 6.

We on the other hand sorely lack depth, and have a system & squad he'll fit into perfectly. We're in a position where we have to take gambles on players like Taylor coz of the lack of parachute money, but those coming down won't be.

15k seems about right to me given his league history. I don't think one 11 goal season in the Champ earns you a 25k wage.
