Worst Performance by a Red

Sauce salad?
Too long ago to single anyone out now, but Barnsley away around the time we signed Rosario was my worst. Might have been Bob's debut? I was at that Blackburn game too, but for whatever reason Barnsley away still haunts me.

Edit: in fact f*** it, I'll go with Rosario on that day - pretty sure he missed an open goal from over the line. The only time I've seen a striker cancel out a goal by blocking the refs view and hooking it out from behind the line. Probably didn't happen but he was really shit and quite the cone down from what we'd been used to.

Andre Silenzi, on paper..yeh maybe but on the pitch...woeful, slow, totally out of his depth in English football.

Overall- Gary Megson, he seemingly went out of his way to get the worst version of a player on the pitch, his attitude to the players was terrible and players performed exactly how you'd expect- they wanted him out- got us supporters to get him out- a very sorry era in our club. A f***ing disgrace of a manager

I don't recall Crossley or anyone else doing an awful lot wrong in that game in terms of errors. Blackburn were just amazing, Shearer and Bohinen especially.

We started that game well. One cb got injured then the other one sent off. All the goals were worldys. I was in with the Blackburn fans. Grim day but not big Norms fault

All these players bring back bad memories 😪 but even in better times i remember Steve Chettle having a nightmare when playing against Niall Quinn. Not saying Chetts was a bad lad, but every player has his nemesis.

This thread brings back too many horrible memories. One of the ones that sticks in my mind not mentioned already is the 80th minute onwards of Forest v Man Utd 98/99 when Solskjaer scored 4 in the last 10 minutes. As good as United were, with the exception of Beasant, Forest really just gave up.

Probably Andy Cole away at Wednesday. I don’t think I have seen a centre-forward move as little during a game of football before or since. Just stood there doing nothing like a pile of dog shit on the turf.

I’m sure I watched a game where Eoin Jess never left the centre-circle too.

Then all the dross: Daryl Powell, Friio, Padula, Gary Holt, Eaden, Dumitru, Veldwijk, Lica, Dadi etc

Can't Play Left-Back
Not necessarily the worst, but I remember a 0-0 draw at home to Chesterfield on New Year's Eve 2005 for the sheer mundanity of it. I didn't go to many games from 2004-2007 as I was at Uni but was back for the holidays for that one. It was cold and so dire. It was peak Megson. Literally the only thing I remember is Sammy Clingan looking pretty decent for Chesterfield.

Watching Forest from afar was unpleasant though. I remember watching us in pubs in Hull losing to the likes of Scunthorpe and Barnsley, scraping a draw with Salisbury. The indignity of being a young lad away from his home city, watching your League One former giant of a football club get humiliated every time they were on TV, was so embarrassing. Particularly when all your new mates were Arsenal or Man Utd fans. I couldn't even watch the second leg against Yeovil because every pub was showing Rugby League! And neither Hull FC nor Hull KR were playing! It was Leeds vs Bradford or some shite. So had to go back to my student house and listen to it on 5Live through my PC on the BBC website. f***ing depressing days!

Megson.

Bong was pretty terrible against Charlton. The context made it worse as well as we were pretty good at the time and needed reinforcements, he comes in with Prem experience and gets boo’d on his debut.

Those early League 1 days were particularly bad.

I just couldn't believe how depressing and dire the performances were. It translated to the fans too.

Paul Evans, Danny Cullip, John Curtis, Gary Holt, Gareth Taylor, etc.

Seemed like players going through the motions more than anything. No fight in them. Just picking up a pay cheque.

Thinking back to those days makes me appreciate nowadays more than ever.

Gregor Robertson - f*** knows the game but it was like watching the worst player on your school football team have the worst game in school history

I think he was trying to play right back, but was so bad actually invented a new position… right defensive corner flag. It was like the pitch was 2 miles long and his legs were wrapped together with parcel tape

He also managed a totally unique new style of play; run with the ball out of play whilst somehow leaving the ball behind to just treacle over the touch line. he attempted this several times before managing to get the ball to join him in the stands with the junior reds

I imagine someone like Megson was in charge or possibly Calderwood ??

Was that around September 1993 ? We played like Wimbledon only not as effective at it as they were. Only good thing about that day was that I bought Bat Out Of Hell 2 from a Barnsley record shop.

It's all about mid-table...
Therz too many int thee, Fukin Chambers giving up as our team Captain, disgrace.

I remember being so angry against Doncaster at home, think we lost 4-0 or something, fukin absolute dross.

I think it was either later 92 or early 93 - the Rosario signing was our replacement (along with Bannister) for the outgoing Teddy Sheringham, who was several leagues above both.

I remember starting that season with huge positivity when Teddy hammered one in at a 1-0 over Liverpool. We sold him - there was talk of Collymore coming in but Cloughie, bless him, decided Stan was overpriced and went with two strikers who worked hard but we're awful.

I think that Barnsley game was the realisation that things were not going to get better and my/our hero was taking us down. Not that I could be mad at him - it was all just really sad that year, and Barnsley away, with us doing our best to look like never s oring, with big Bob spooning our the one gilt edges chance against a shitty bunch of cloggers on a drizzly northern day*, was about as depressing as it got.

* It probably wasn't even raining, it was just that gloomy I may have misremembered.

Also shout out for the Platt years, where I spent most of matchdays getting hammered to avoid having to suffer that dross. Pub at 10, arrive late, early half time pints continuing well into the second half, early exit to the pub. Probably says as much about me at that time as the football, but I hated that period from the little of the games that I did see.

The whole f***ing team against Chester.

Yeah, that match.

Oldham away. I was embarrassed to be there.

f*** you, Megson.

Losing 5-0 away at Oldham continues to haunt my nightmares.

As far as individual performances go- either Bong v Charlton or David Friio away at Rotherham. Both utterly disgraceful.
Oldham away 😕, cold wet miserable and when I returned home the ex wife was still there…..

We didn’t play Barnsley in our relegation season under Clough.
I think you probably mean the following season when we made a poor start under Frank Clark and lost 1-0
at Oakwell.
Stan Collymore also had a stinker that day in one of his early games for Forest-the guy standing in front of me said he reminded him of Justin Fashanu!

Sorry but this thread is really depressing reading 😄

I remember that well , he ‘passsed’ the ball five yards to Silva and misssed, silva threw his arms to his side as if to say ‘what the f*** are you doing on the pitch’

Worst for me was the Yeovil or Stoke capitulations.
