Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has declared that he is donating his World Cup winnings to causes in Brazil.

The 25-year-old, who helped Germany win a fourth world crown in Brazil, had paid for the surgery of eleven sick children in Brazil ahead of the tournament, in conjunction with the charity Big Shoe.

But now, on his Facebook page, Ozil has revealed that as a "personal thank-you" to the people of Brazil for their hospitality during the last month, he will raise that number to 23 - to mark the number of players in the German squad.

"Prior to the #WorldCup I supported the surgery of eleven sick children [in Brazil]. Since the victory of the #WorldCup is not only due to eleven players but to our whole team, I will now raise the number to 23," said Ozil, via Facebook.

The Gunners star's decision to publicly announce what he was doing came following a false story that had earlier declared he would be donating his World Cup winnings towards the crisis in Gaza.

"The claim that Mesut donated money to Gaza is not true," said the midfielder's representative Roland Eitel.

"Maybe in the future, who knows? He donated money to causes in Brazil and he is now on holiday."

I know some will say they can afford it, but just to take a moment to think of doing this then to actually do it gets applause from me.

Well done to all who give, whatever the amount.

These players got to the final and earned their pay, yet they're still donated it to charity. The England, Spain, Portugal and Italy players should have been the first to do something like this after their abysmal displays at the World Cup.

England players already give their fees to charity.

England players do give their fees to charity. That doesn't extend to naming rights and sponsorship fees though iirc

perhaps they should keep them til they do something worthwhile of giving

I was impressed in this case though that Ozil gave it back to Brazilian people especially after how much the World cup cost them
