United Soccer League

I've just seen this, the USL (basically the "other" league of soccer in America) re-branded to have one central brand and three leagues under that one brand, like us.

The USL Championship, USL League One, and USL League Two. I think its interesting, as league one and league two are focusing on cities who don't have a sports team but with a decently large population.

I suppose the thought process behind this rebranding is 1. the world cup and riding the train of the north American world cup in 2026 and 2. Better use of all the soccer talent we have in the large university system we have here all over the nation.

From what I see, most MLS or USL soccer fans have another team they support which is in our leagues or the other major top divisions in Europe. So, rebranding to make it look like all the leagues here makes sense. Makes it less different, less american.

IDK I thought it was interesting, especially as there is a team, USL East Bay, which is going to play in the top division which is the championship, in 2021.

Also, there is going to be talks about promotion/relegation once the all the teams and leagues are fully fleshed out.

So US fans will have the opportunity to suffer as we do on this side of the pond.

For the record, which is your favoured stateside team Tommy?

Interesting. So there's no movement between the USL Championship and MLS? Promotion, relegation etc?

No there wouldn't be. Since the MLS is owned like the NBA and NFL (I think) as basically joint owners of the whole damn thing, pro/rel would not work. But, there would be some sort of pro rel in the USL divisions tho. Like I said, we need all the teams established first to see what happens. It is going to be interesting to say the least, like how the world cup in the 90's here boosted the MLS, the 2026 should do the same but we a new generation of kids and teenagers more accustomed to soccer.

„FC Tucson“ should be the answer to that question.

You’ve asked that before :)

We inherited another American member, quite by accident; „Tucson Hooligan“.

He actually visited Nottingham over Xmas many years ago, and a few of us met up in the TBI, and he brought some FC Tucson shirts (I still have mine!)

Also in favour of FC Tucson was that one of their supporters‘ groups was called the „Cactus Pricks“, which I thought was funny anyway!

Not sure where to post this so this seems as logical as anywhere else.
Philadelphia Union fan visits NFFC.

Yay.

Sitting on my tailgate.....

Ouch!!

Forest being thought of as no better than a MLS team

Weird how the Americans have bastardised the beautiful game with their flags and anthems and fireworks while watching the soccer. It's like watching Derby

I would have to disagree about the standard of the game. MLS is League One standard at best. The defending is shocking and most teams have a complete inability to play the ball through midfield which makes it a bit of ping pong through the middle of the park until one team gets a fortuitous bounce. I will say that MLS has improved, but it is not yet up to the standard of the championship.

As far as pregame activities, growing up in the states made me very familiar with tailgating. It's alright but since I began coming to Forest games years ago, I have become a devotee of the pissup in a good pub. Fawazzock also made the Bridgford chippy a part of my matchday favourites. I have tried to educate my countrymen on the beauty of the pissup but I also understand that MLS is played through the summer and folks like to be out in the sun, drinking beer and grilling. To each his own I guess.

Americans failing to understand a good piss-up is a direct consequence of the shocking quality of American beer.

Any country that thinks Budweiser and Coors are the epitome of taste deserves having prohibition restored.

As someone of German heritage who has also spent a good deal of time in Britain, I concur.

The only thing that has saved American beer is the micro brew movement. Some damn good beers there. Still, too many mouth breathers drinking Coors Light and Bud.

The thing that stood out from the article for me was their dislike of the tribalism connected with football.

Whilst I agree that segregating pubs is over-zealous for the most part, I would miss having all of the away fans together if it were to happen. Having them here, there and everywhere like they do at the rugby just sanitises the atmosphere. I’m a fairly level-headed person and enjoy debating the merits of the game with fans of other clubs but I have absolutely no interest in sitting next to them whilst the game is in progress.

Their lager is pretty dire, but the Americans put out some excellent IPAs.
