Sure. There is an unwritten law, called law 18. Smart refs apply it to try and get out of controversial decisions. Refs are part of controversy enough without adding more fuel to the fire. So, Areola fouled, Taylor realizes he has the ball in his hands, applies advantage. This is a common thing to do as the keeper has the option of throwing, punting, or putting it down and playing it. Bearing in mind there are 60K or so people in the stadium, making noise. Areola throws ball out in front of him, much like he would if he was given a free kick. As Gakpo runs forward towards the ball, Taylor realizes what has probably/possibly has occurred and blows his whistle. Smart move. Now, let's say Taylor digs his heels in and allows Gakpo to score. What are the headlines about tomorrow? What will be the singular talking point post match? Did Klopp say anything about this incident post match? Did the commentators make a big fuss about it? The answer is no, of course. At times applying common sense (and understand that "common sense" isn't a colloquialism I am particularly fond of), particularly in situations like this, is the smart thing to do. 99% of teh time, when something a bit weird happens, there is a bray for about ten seconds, and then it is forgotten. But if you fail, as a referee, to recognize that moment, they'll still be talking about it in 2 or 3 days. Easy choice.
Good explanation Pynchon, thank you.

Just curious how the "shot" that went to the corner flag didn't find the Luton player offside?
