There was a piece on a news programme last night about how short councils are and How much they will have to put up council tax if they don't get extra money from the government. Their only alternative would be to use there contingency money. Isn't that what contingency money is for, to be used when you can't get it any where else. That is what rainy day funds are for isn't it? It's pouring at the moment all over the place.
No, contingency money is to be used for one-off, unpredictable events.

It shouldn't cover planned expenditure.

To be fair inRavenshead the council did a lot of tarmacing maybe six months ago and the general condition of the roads is now pretty good, not perfect but OK.
BUt the condition of some main roads is truly awful, the very worst one I know is Diamond Ave in Kirkby in Ashfield, it's more pot hole than road!

I notice that the Ben Bradley-led, Tory-controlled Notts County Council have begun dealing with pot-holes affecting Rushcliffe, Gedling and Erewash which, coincidentally, happen to currently be Tory constituencies.
Erewash is Derbyshire not NCC but your'e observations concerning the colour of the polotics are spot on.

Tom Randall is reliant on votes from the good folk of Ravenshead AR.

A bit like saying I cant afford to pay my mortgage but I refuse to use my savings.

I can only begin to imagine how many claims they have faced recently.

The roads around Nottingham are in terrible state and not much is being done.

Whenever they do "repair" them they may as well just spray paint them black.

But what winds me up,which has happened for a few years now,is they come out and inspect them and then put their usual yellow mark around them and then nothing.

We have a stretch of road closed to us and that's happened a few years now, when you go to report it on the website their is tons of reports and most show complete or no further work needed which is a complete lie.

One other problem I have noticed in the UK, is the ever increasing number of heavier, SUV-type vehicles, cars that are much more damaging to road surfaces, so that means the roads get torn up even worse, prompting more people to go and get themselves an SUV, because the roads are in such a state…

Yes, the Germans like a nice Mercedes G-Wagen or Porsche Cayenne, but the German road surfaces seem to take this into account, indeed, there were some recent works on a road near where I live, and they came and stripped the entire road surface down to the bed, before relaying (at least) two courses on top. And they did a stretch of about 200m, in a couple of weeks.
All roads (posts) lead to Germany.

Mate, don't get me started. It rages me man I swear.

The roads around me are literally falling to pieces, its the worst I've ever seen it. Every time it hits freezing the chewing gum that they filled it in with last time just falls to pieces and take more road with it. My 5 minute drive home from Carlton to Mapperley consists of swerving several massive bastards. The missus wasn't so lucky yesterday 🙄View attachment 35076
The whole of Gedling borough is like that though.

Every time you go somewhere there's potholes everywhere, the staggering thing is someone has seen that one, painted a white marker around it, and then left it.

They are having to do a lot of temporary repairs which are no good as the crap they stuff in and jump on isn't sealed enough so it comes out again if they don't come back to them quickly enough.

What's really needed in a lot of cases is for them to resurface the whole road but that obviously takes longer to do. It does fix the issue for longer though. They have done a decent job where this has happened - the A612 between Gedling and Burton Joyce is lovely now, though I didn't think that bit was too bad. They did the junction of Gedling Road and Burton Road in Carlton a few months back, well I say that but they did half of it, and left a load of defects on the bit they didn't do, so it would have made more sense for them to do the whole thing as opposed to coming back again, which they'll invariably have to do.

They have let it get so bad though that they probably don't have the time or resources to fix everywhere that needs it properly.

Priorities! It mist be pointed out that Earwash (to call it correctly) is in Derbyshire, also Tory controlled, and which is in an even deeper financial hole. They are after selling that crumbling pile of an HQ, up the hill in Matlock. Who would buy that in the present economic climate is yet another question. If they can sell it then they'll get SFA for it, but they will rid themselves of the maintenance bill. I was there for a meeting last year and the room had to be changed at the last minute because of a ceiling collapse. It is in a sorry state.

Yes that’s the same process when wanting to see a doctor. There’s no diagnosis and no money.. but the receptionist will see you now to confirm what you already know… you need a doctor.

Yellow highlights mean they’ve acknowledged the hole and it’s the never ending priority list.

What gets me is that it’s your responsibility to ensure your car is roadworthy.. but not the authorities responsibility to ensure the roads are worthy.. shrug the shoulders is the best we get really.

Vietnam now has better roads, many parts of that country were quite literally bombed to f*** and left to fester since the 70s

As opposed to where instead? Gedling is quite bad, as are parts of Rushcliffe, to be fair I think most of the Notts County Council areas are Tory constituencies (Randall, Edwards, Spencer, Jenrick, Anderson, BCS, Bradley, Henry) and it's only Nottm constituencies which have Labour MPs. But the Nottingham city areas are different as it's a unitary council independent from Notts so it'd be ultimately Mellen not Bradley who would decide that - and also they are skint

It's not just down to money. believe me, there are shortages of resources in terms of manpower, equipment and materials. If the money was available, this is going to take a long time to put right.
I've been working a lot in Liverpool and many projects are associated with the Bramley Moor Dock development. Projects are behind for the reasons I've just given.

I live in the Mansfield area, south Mansfield has had some resurfacing done. Ben Bradley is on f/b bragging like he's done the work all by himself. Election time is looming.

As I said earlier Ravenshead which is under Gedling Council has done quite well in the last year and th roads are pretty OK. The are now spending a few mil on Kirkby Road and Woodborough but this is money recieved direct from central goverment.
Also while in general terms the councils are responsible it is worth being aware that trunk routes and motorways are the rsponsibilty of Highways England.

Have you seen that Ben Brown character on your council, always telling any one who will listen how good the Conservatives are?

REDDERS78

It's not.

Because they're not savings. A councils are not run like households.

They're set aside for shit that happens, like Mablethorpe falling into the sea.
Being 80 miles from the coast its probably not on the radar in Nottingham though. With that in mind I'd just like them to get the bastarding roads fixed. Save up for a rainy day next year lads, crack on.

I don't know how that dragarse Bradley finds the time, but as well as being the MP for Mansfield, as you state, and the leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, he's now promoting himself to become the newly-created Mayor of the East Midlands.
