The time has come for a massive clear out

weobley

Youth Team
Our club needs to get shot of a hell of a lot of players this close season.
If we are going to challenge for promotion next season and replace them with better quality
It is. Obvious that our back up players are not good enough.
Which players would you like to be moved on.

Majewski
Harding
Fox
Abdoun
Djebbour
Halford

I would get Peltier if he was on a reasonable wage as a replacement for Halford.

...I am sure I have missed a couple. All shown themselves to be poor. Plenty of wages freed up there too.

Who's going to buy the under contract ones off us? Nobody is that thick!

I am pretty sure that anyone picking up the wages of Collins, Harding, Cox, Majewski, Abdoun and Djebbour (if not loaned) will be allowed to do so.

I think it would be a mistake to release Halford and let a rival benefit from his versatility. Henderson might have a season left as Adebola type once Reid's delivery is back. He's stopped scoring without the supply

I would prefer Peltier over Halford. I haven't been keen on Halfords attitude this season. He's had some rubbish perfomances in a few positions as well.

I'd take Fox and Harding off that list. Both have done well for me. Put Fox in our first choice back 4 and he is good enough. Anyone would not look as good alongside Collins.

You won't get a better back up than Harding. There's a place for Majewski in the squad too.

That would leave us with

Darlow
Lichaj
Cohen
Lansbury
Reid
Mackie
Lascelles
Paterson
Wilson
Vaughan
Hobbs
Derbyshire
McLaughlin
Osborn
Evtimov

So we're going to buy another 7 or 8 players then? Maybe more if Lascelles, Darlow or Lansbury leave.

Abdoun isn't going anywhere. So add him to the list too. Harding will stay and I can't see anyone buying Halford, Collins or Cox who are all under contract so will be here next season. Derbyshire might not be here.

Darlow
Lichaj
Cohen
Lansbury
Reid

That will leave us with about 4-5 players coming in to get to the 24-25 man squad.

Personally I don't think we need major surgery, the injuries we had were epic and really disrupted us. The core of the squad is very good when all are fit. Darlow is the best keeper in this league. Hobbs and Wilson are the best centre back pairing and Lascelles has a very bright future. Lichaj has been excellent and our first choice midfield four of Lansbury, Vaughn, Reid and Patterson is very strong. The engine of Cohen coming back is massive too.

We need good strikers, a replacement for De Vries and a bit of cover/competition in midfield like Dorrens or Geddy for example.

Re: The time as come for a massive clear out.

I was just making a point to those people who think we can afford to ship out and replace every backup player (even if we'd like to) and replace them with quality. They might be forgetting how much that 20 goal a season striker might cost us and that's just for 1 player out of 7 or 8 they want us to bring in.

I agree with you, I'd rather keep the likes of Harding, Majewski and Halford as back up, bring in a couple more youngsters and make 2-3 quality additions if possible.

I don't see why Evtimov can't be sub keeper, De Vries hasn't looked anything above average and some of his kicking yesterday was terrible and put us under immediate pressure and Brighton on the attack, can't be having that.

Re: The time as come for a massive clear out.

The only names I’m really interested in are Peltier, Mancienne, Andrew Surman, Troy Deeney and Stevie May. Think Dan Fox deal is watertight from what I’ve heard, but hoping similar to Djebbour situation.

Re: The time as come for a massive clear out.

Whilst some people are saying not to change the squad too much through various forums, Twitter etc etc. Personally we have too big of a squad now. I'm sure I've read that we have 32 senior players in our squad at the moment which considering the injuries we have had has been a blessing in disguise at times. However, I can't imagine we'll suffer the same sort of issues next season.

Therefore we have to be ruthless and look to reduce the squad size whilst supplementing it with good younger players or some senior players who can add to the quality of the squad.

Personally for me, I'd look to go into the season with a 25 man squad. That includes any players promoted to the first team and possibly players we won't be able to shift.

Goalkeepers: Darlow, De Vries & Evtimov.

We're sorted here so don't need to sign anyone. Obviously if Darlow was to be sold then we may have to look at purchasing another senior keeper. Although De Vries is more than able to cover for a season or two whilst Evtimov gets some more experience. We also have a few good keepers coming through according to people on Twitter.

Right Backs: Lichaj, Jara & A.N.Other

A little bit of a problem position for us this season since Jara has become useless. Therefore I'd allow Jara to leave. Lichaj is the obvious first choice but we do need someone else who could provide competition. My two first choices would be Luke Ayling(Free) or John Brayford who I feel would be available for £500k or so. If we don't sign anyone for this position then Halford or Lascelles could cover here. Halford only if he gets his attitude sorted.

Left Backs: Cohen, Harding, Fox & Fenton

Chrissy is the obvious first choice here for next season. However it might take him a while to find the same form that he had last season which means we'll need a few players who could deputise here but not have too much of an effect on the rest of the team. Harding has never been the best for us but he is still an able back up and knows the squad. He's in his last year so I can't see many teams wanting to part with any cash to sign him. Many fans slag him off but he doesn't moan at being back up.

Fox is supposed to be joining permanently. Hopefully we can get out of that deal as he has been useless. I'm not sure if the OS is correct but he's collected 9 yellow cards in 15 appearances for us this season. As a left back that is horrendous and makes him a liability.

Fenton is another one of the youngsters who seems to be banging on the door of the first team. Again from people on Twitter he seems to be a good player who normally plays centre half but can play left back. Not sure what his contract situation is like but it's definitely worth exploring the option.

Centre Halves: Hobbs, Wilson, Lascelles, Collins, Halford & Fenton

Here we have three quality centre halves and is I'm going to be honest, three decent back ups. Collins isn't the greatest of players but he does his job. If someone is interested in paying for his services, or if Pearce feels it's time he should leave then I'll accept it. But at the moment we'd assume he'll be staying and he's more than able to do a job for a few games a season. The same goes for Halford.

Midfielders: Reidy, Lansbury, Paterson, Vaughan, Osborn, Morgan, Rees, Blake, Majewski, McLaughlin, Mackie, Abdoun, Gillett, Greening & Moussi

Our midfield on paper is one that is strong. Reid, Lansbury, Paterson, Vaughan should all be in the starting 11. Who else plays depends on Pearce's style and formation. Osborn is a good young player and as are Morgan, Rees, Blake and McLaughlin. Some of the youngsters contracts are expiring but now is the time to offer them new deals and left them progress. If they don't there will be clubs interested in them. Majewski is a more than able back up so I'd keep him unless we can attract some serious quality.

Mackie is a good player(I know him and Pato are more of attacking players but I've included them in this section as I can't be bothered). Mackie looks uninterested and like he could scrap with anyone. If an offer is made for him I'd consider allowing him to depart if we can attract someone of better quality.

I'd allow Abdoun to go as he appears to be unsettled whilst Gillett, Greening and Moussi are all out of contract. The latter confirming his departure already.

Strikers: Cox, Djebbour, Derbyshire, Miller, Henderson, Tudgay, Blackstock & Walker

Our problem position. None of the current strikers we have are consistent or good enough to be constant starters in our team. Cox constantly fails to live up to the expectations and for that reason if we're able to get a reasonable fee for him I'd be looking to get him out. Djebbour hasn't looked interested since he's started and if it's true that he's only on loan. I'd allow him to leave the club in the summer. If it's not, I'd still be looking to ship him out. Miller and Tudgay can leave at the end of their contracts whilst Henderson is useless so I'd be looking to get rid of him as well. Blackstock is currently injured but again if someone makes an offer then I'd allow him to leave. That leaves us with Derbyshire and Walker. Derbyshire has done well but is he going to be able to replicate that form over the course of a whole season? If he can and accepts a reduced deal then I would be open to him staying. If not, he can go.

Ideal signings for this position would be Macheda, Callum Wilson, Stevie May and possibly others.

That would leave us with a squad of;

GKs: Darlow, De Vries & Evtimoc(3)
RBs: Lichaj & A.N.Other/Halford(2)
LBs: Cohen, Harding & Fenton(3)
CBs: Hobbs, Wilson, Lascelles, Collins, Halford & Fenton(4/6)
CMs: Reidy, Lansbury, Vaughan, Osborn, Morgan, Rees, Blake, Majewski & McLaughlin(9)
Wingers: Paterson, A.N.Other, A.N.Other & McLaughlin(3/4)
Strikers: Derbyshire, Walker, A.N.Other & A.N.Other(4)

That would see Moussi, Fox, Greening, Jara, Gomis, Gillett, Abdoun, Mackie, Peltier, Djebbour, Cox, Miller, Henderson, Tudgay & Blackstock all leave the club.

It would then leave us with a squad of 28 which again is still too many. But with what we'd be getting rid of it would be an improvement. We could even look to send some of those younger players out on loan and then reduce the squad that way by bringing in some more quality.

Re: The time as come for a massive clear out.

I wouldn't ship out that many, we just need better luck, fitness coaches and a manager who won't rush injured players back next season and then hopefully Collins will play as much as a 4th/5th choice centre half would be expected to i.e. very rarely, not 28 times!

I'd sign up Peltier to be honest, versatile, decent and likely to be cheap.

Our defence doesn't really need much work doing to it, only futher forward.

1) Darlow, 2) DDV 3) Evtimov
4) Harding 5) Fox 6) Hobbs 7) Wilson 8.) Lascelles 9) Collins 10) Halford 11) Lichaj 12) Peltier
13) Cohen 14) Vaughan 15) Reid 16) Lansbury 17) Osborn 18.) Majewski 19) Paterson 20) Mackie
21) Cox 22) Derbyshire 23) Blackstock

With Blake/Walker/Fenton/Rees/McLaughlin etc. to be brought in.

Release all out of contract players apart from Derbyshire (who's offered a short contract on reduced terms), hope we can get shot of Djebbour and Abdoun easily and ship out Henderson to anyone daft enough to pay his wages.

Another midfielder, another wide player and a top quality striker would be excellent. Gives us 26 players plus some talented youth to come in. To me, that's plenty.

Re: The time as come for a massive clear out.

Any one who thinks we should ship out Cox while we have him under contract is not thinking straight.

We are losing 3 strikers straight off and Cox is the best of the ones that remain. In fact he's the only forward in our team who has a reputation for quality (Ireland international who's played in the Premier League).

Dyche was on Sky earlier in the year and was talking about how good a squad he thinks we have and how Cox is a player he rates really highly.

He's intelligent, hard working, and actually pretty skillful. He's just had a prolonged run of bad form and needs to get some self belief back.

Billy clearly knew what a big player he could be tried to play him back into form and kept starting him. Didn't happen, but the talent's there and I think Pearce would be out of his mind to not keep him as an option.

Re: The time as come for a massive clear out.

Cox isn't a striker, strikers score goals. He has scored one or two excellent goals but they are the exception rather than the norm - he has missed a lot of good chances.

Yesterday for example, 2 v 2 and Derbyshire plays him in, he could have either gone on his left side and shot across goal or cut back on his right side and then shoot. Instead of taking one touch to knock it inside and then shoot, he knocked it inside and then took another touch and then lost his chance to shoot. He does that a lot. Derbyshire on the other hand seems to make more and better runs in behind (also stretches defences and takes players away to make space for team mates), time them better and score a fair few of his goals without even needing a touch to control the ball.

Maybe Cox and Derbyshire could play together, with Cox dropping off like Tudgay did yesterday but Cox obviously isn't a likely regular goalscorer where as Derbyshire has shown that he could be, starting regularly rather than coming off the bench for 5-10 minutes when the game has degenerated into a scrappy sunday league game of hoofball.

Re: The time as come for a massive clear out.

All out of contract players bar Derbyshire will go I think - and rightly so. Wouldn't pursue the loans of Fox or Djebbour(if he is actually a loan and didn't sign a 2 1/2 year deal in Jan) any further either.

In terms of long term players to follow them out, I'd sell Halford, Cox and Radi go and make Collins and Hendo available for free transfers - although think they will both be difficult to shift with their ages.

I'm split on Abdoun. Not been impressed with what I have seen but think he suffered from a lack of pre-season and has next season to prove he is truly cut out for English football. Saying that I wouldn't be sad to see him go - and him being frozen out under Brazil hints he will be on his way out.

If they all went, that would leave us with 3 GKs, 5 DFs, 7 MFs and 3 STs leaving us to effectively plug the gaps in defence and up front. Midfield still lacks another holding player but from what I've seen of Osborn and his energy, he could easily sit alongside Vaughan as a box to box man - and depending on Cohens knees, he could slip into a similar midfield role.
