The Football League Show

Apologies if there's a thread about this already - I did have a look but I couldn't find one anywhere. Presumably most of us caught this on BBC1 last night. I have to say I was a bit disappointed - I was expecting Match of the Day for the lower leagues (MOTD3 if you like) but it all seemed a little flat. The e-mails / text messages bit with that receptionist every few minutes was dreadful and I couldn't understand why the whole show seemed to have been broadcast from a cave.

Thoughts, anyone?

It'd take about 4 hours for them to do it in the same style as MotD! But yeah, the highlights were a little lacking, and it was very similar to the ITV show last year, but without awful punditry.

That said, they immediately called Ross McCormack "Lee" McCormack :D And Ian Holloway's usual "x is a great guy/club/chairman/player" waffle was nauseating.

It has promise, but there was plenty I didn't like.

The woman (Lizzie?) was a decent enough presenter-type, but should have her own 5/10 minute section for the mails where the panel can get involved interactively, rather than pointlessly cutting to her every so often.

The bloke presenting seemed alright, but Steve Claridge should be banned from TV.

They really need to sort that echo out. ^ has it right, it's almost as if they've filmed it underground.

The opening credits were shit.

They told me some of the scores/results before I had seen the goals. I hate that.

did you know newcastle got relegated last season?

I'll tell you what did annoy me - I was out when the Newcastle game was on and so when I got back I spent the entire evening leading up to The Football League Show avoiding the telly, the radio and the Internet so that I wouldn't find out the score and could sit down and enjoy the highlights without knowing what had happened earlier. Within thirty seconds of the show starting some bigmouth (can't remember which one) blurted out something like "poor old Newcastle had to settle for a draw"...

Fu*ckwits!

Was it just me that found her really attractive? Though perhaps that's just the desperate loser talking.

That said it was a decent enough show, far better than anything ITV have managed to churn out although that isn't much of an accomplishment. I liked the fact that they occasionally showed more than just the goals from some games though time constraints aren't really in their favour.

Didn't like the utterly ludicrous and pointlessly wizzy bit at the end where Manish stood beside a glitzy quasi holographic league table. Just put the table on the screen and cut out all the Tron bullshit.

It was ok, it could have been better - but there are an awful lot of goals to get in and they only have a 75min slot.

It must take them a good deal of time to edit the show together and they managed that much quicker and much better than ITV ever did, as ITV never stretched to show every goal ...

I wasn't too keen on the e-mail's and texts thing though, it seemed a little forced and at nearly 1am who is bothered about how many hundreds of Newcastle fans are getting desperate for Shearer, just get on with the highlights!

It was the first one and I expect it to get better - but I don't think anyone can deny it was 100X better than ITV's shoddy attempt ...

I was very disapointed with these too - hopefully the goals thing wont happen again ... they never reveal the premiership scores before the highlights.

For a first attempt, I thought it was pretty good. They managed to show all the goals which is an achievement in itself by ITV standards, and they gave the better matches more time, rather than just picking one match a week before and sticking to that no matter how crap it was (eg: D*rby vs Peterborough seemed to get a few more highlights because that was a pretty decent game, wheras ours only got a couple because, from what I heard, it was fairly dull, which is fair enough)

The emails/texts thing wasn't ideal (As someone else said, it would be a good segment for 5 minutes at the end) but with a bit of trial and error I reckon it could be decent.

Also having watched the whole thing, I don't think there will be a single club that will feel hard done by by how much of there match was shown. 35 matches into just over an hour of programming isn't easy, as ITV proved so terribly.

Did anyone else's show jump to show a chick on the bog?

Has he singed yet?
The echoey room they filmed it in was shit, as was the bird reading out the emails. And don't get me started on how much attention was given to Newcastle!

Whilst the emails were a bit cringeworthy (loads of people texting in to say that they hope their team does well this year- no shit!) I thought that for a first attempt it wasn't bad. Contrary to what others have said, I don't mind Steve Claridge and I think we all knew what the scores were before the program so I'm not to bothered by that either. Not as in depth as Sky's program, but still a reasonably effort and definately a massive improvement on anything ITV put together.

be thankfull it wasn't ITV - having shown the match earlier they'd have shown 30minutes of highlights of it!

Alan Shearer is a boring f***er, but I suppose he is easier to watch than Andy Townsend.

They were always going to focus on Newcastle going down and in all fairness it's a big story. Give them a week or two when they've dropped some points and the novelty has gone and they'll be ignored like the rest of us.

It was OK as a first go, significantly better than ITV's limp efforts though.

Still not a patch on what Sky would have done, but to be honest Sky don't seem to care about the Football League really - their focus is the Premier League alone.

They need to sort the studio out, and cut out the dramatic camera angles zooming up to Manish Bhasin standing on a gantry; also the email bit - not sure why they had to keep cutting to that; do it all in one chunk, and bear in mind that most correspondents at that time of night are possibly in varying stages of inebriation.

As to the pundits, at that time of night (bearing in mind it doesn't finish until 0100!) they're going to be struggling to get anyone decent, but Steve Claridge has at least been there and done that, although that doesn't quite make up for his clumsy presenting style.

And Ian Holloway is just slightly mad.

The Newcastle 'bias' I think will diminish when the Beeb have had their fascination with them (maybe in the next month!)

Not a bad effort, I'm sure they'll improve with time.

What I found annoying was the emphasis on the league tables after one game in the season, they mean absolutely nothing until around 10 games into the season.

As a platform to see all the football league highlights I thought it was brilliant as they showed every goal etc, but the presenting and texts bit let it down a bit. But that is something that can be easily improved as the season goes on.

They should get rid of Lizzie all together. I'm not interested in hearing what retard football fans text/email in to them.

Cut the chatter in the studio down to about a quarter of what they did, and just show more highlights. That's all most of us are interested in.

It's good that we get to see the goals on terrestrial, of course, but Lizzy's e-mail corner? What a load of rubbish, what is this CBBC?

Remember the Premiership on ITV and Andy Townsend's tactics truck. That was equally nonsense taking up valuable time from actually showing football. I don't understand it. On MOTD they don't waste time with emails, yet the football leauge is of less importance and a novelty enough to waste time finding out what Barry from Southend who is a neutral (liverpool fan) thinks about rotherhams chances this year.

It's just rubbish, who even finds this stuff the slightest bit entertaining? Just show the pissing games and to be honest if they have to be shown at 11:45 (after MOTD) can they not show them first on BBC3 or something at a reasonable hour? Many people are pissed/out/tired at 11:45.

It's on iplayer in all fairness so you can watch it online at your leisure so that isn't really an issue.
