MLS season has concluded and the playoffs begin Wednesday. FC Cincinnati have won the Supporters' Shield and head into the playoffs as the number one seed in the east. Very odd playoff system as seeds 8 & 9 have a play-in game and then round 1 is a best of 3 series while the following rounds are all straight knockout format.
Play-in round: Seeds in parentheses, Wednesday 25 Oct
(E8) NY Red Bull - Charlotte FC (E9)
(W8) Sporting Kansas City - San Jose Earthquakes (W9)
1st Round:
East
(E1) FC Cincinnati - play-in winner
(E4) Philadelphia Union - New England Revolution (E5)
(E3) Columbus Crew - Atlanta United (E6)
(E2) Orlando City - Nashville SC (E7)
West
(W1) St. Louis City - play-in winner
(W4) Houston Dynamo - Real Salt Lake (W5)
(W3) LAFC - Vancouver Whitecaps (W6)
(W2) Seattle Sounders - FC Dallas (W7)

Yep, the thing happens. Botafogo fails to regain top spot by conceding an equaliser to RB Bragantino in extra time. They've been sitting comfortably on top of the table, but they walked away with 2 draws 4 losses in the last 6 matches. Palmeiras takes the spot with 62 pts, with Gremio & Bragantino breathing down 60pt Botafogo's necks with both 59 pts.

Brasileirão has 4 rounds to go and Botafogo have a game in hand. All their last 5 opponents sit in the bottom half of the table. Could they pull a comeback or will this season be remembered as a bottle job à la Arsenal 22/23? I've never followed the Brasil league before but things are getting quite interesting.

It's been interesting to watch for sure. I saw Botafogo's recent game at home vs Gremio. They threw away a lead with some shocking defending. Luis Suarez looked old and slow and he still shredded them 2nd half. Botafogo's game in hand will be vital for them.

After the long, drawn out 1st round and play-in games, the MLS Cup playoffs have reached the quarterfinal (or Conference semifinal) stage.
Sporting KC advanced through the play-in game defeating San Jose Earthquakes 0-0 and 4-2 on penalties then defeated #1 western seed St Louis City 2 games to nil. Houston Dynamo defeated Salt Lake over 3 matches winning the 3rd game 1-1 and 4-3 on penalties. LAFC beat Vancouver Whitecaps 2 games to nil and Seattle Sounders beat FC Dallas, winning 1-0 in the 3rd match. In the east, Supporters' Shield winners FC Cincinnati beat NY Red Bulls 2 games to nil after NY had defeated Charlotte 5-2 in the play-in game. Philadelphia beat New England in 2 games. Columbus Crew beat Atlanta United winning the decisive 3rd match 4-2 and Orlando City beat Nashville SC winning both matches 1-0.
Conference Semifinals: 25 & 26 Nov. From this stage on it is straight knockout format.
East
(1) FC Cincinnati - Philadelphia Union (4)
(2) Orlando City - Columbus Crew (3)
West
(4) Houston Dynamo - Sporting Kansas City (8)
(2) Seattle Sounders - LAFC (3)

MLS Conference Semifinals:
East:
(2) Orlando City 0-2 Columbus Crew (3) aet
(1) FC Cincinnati 1-0 Philadelphia Union (4) VAR misses obvious offside call for winning goal.
West:
(4) Houston Dynamo 1-0 Sporting Kansas City (8)
(2) Seattle Sounders 0-1 LAFC (3)

So the Eastern Final will be Supporters' Shield winners (1) FC Cincinnati vs local rival Columbus Crew (3).
The Western Final will be in LA as (3) LAFC take on former Forest man Ben Olsen's Houston Dynamo (4).

In the Brasileirao, Botafogo continue to drop points at the end of games from winning positions, conceding in the 90' to Santos in a 1-1 draw. This trend of conceding late from winning positions may have cost them the title. They held an 11 point lead at one point but the top of the table now looks like this with 3 rounds to go.
1. Palmeiras 63 pts GD 26
2. Flamengo 63 pts GD 17
3. Botafogo 62 pts GD 23
4. Atletico MG 60 pts GD 19

Botafogo continue their trend of dropping points from winning positions by taking the lead on a penalty vs Coritiba in 90+5'. Less than a minute later Coritiba went right down the field and with Botafogo players standing around thinking the game was won, equalised.
Atletico Mineiro got a good result at the Maracana defeating Flamengo 0-3 to stay within 3 points of leaders Palmeiras who defeated America 4-0. There are 2 games left.

In the Brasileirao, Palmeiras have all but wrapped up the title with one match to go. They defeated Fluminense 1-0 while Botafogo could only manage a 0-0 with struggling Cruzeiro. The table is an interesting one top to bottom. At the top:
1. Palmeiras 37 +31 69
2. Atletico MG 37 +23 66
3. Flamengo 37 +15 66

At the bottom:
15. Santos 37 -24 43
16. Vasco da Gama 37 -11 42
17. Bahia 37 -6 41 (last relegation place)
18, 19 and 20 are Goias, Coritiba and America Mineiro who are already relegated.

Final matchday of the season is this Wednesday.

In MLS, Columbus went on the road and defeated top seed and Supporters Shield winner FC Cincinnati 2-3, coming back from 2-0 down to win the East.

Out west it was LAFC defeating Houston Dynamo 2-0 to get back to the final to try and defend last year's title.

The final will be this Saturday in Columbus.

I’ve had some Brazilian colleagues visiting me last week, they are all Palmeiras fans (our main location in Brazil is just outside Sao Paolo) and they were very happy with this development.

I have some very happy Brazilian friends and colleagues in Sao Paulo today.

Any excuse for a party, that lot.

Coupe de France Round of 64 draw is done, where Ligue 1 teams will join the lower division teams.
The biggest news of the draw was that 6th tier US Revel will face none other than Paris Saint-Germain!
Just watch their reactions, these are what makes cup games truly magical!

But the most amazing thing about Coupe de France is its sheer number of participants, 7,355 teams to be exact this year!
Every single registered club in France can participate, including overseas territories scattered all over the world thousands of kilometers away.

They play their own preliminary rounds first like any other French mainland region, then one winner from each region join in the 7th/8th round.
Here's a quick summary of each team, which side was their last match and how far they've traveled.

French Guiana: ASC Le Geldar—lost against 4th tier Avoine OCC (6,786km away), 8th round
Reunion: Saint-Denis FC—lost against 2nd tier Paris FC (6,855km away), 8th round
Martinique: Golden Lion FC—won against 5th tier FC Métropole Troyenne (6,970km away), advance to Round of 64
Guadeloupe: CS Moulien—won against 4th tier FC Fleury 91 (6,786km away), advance to Round of 64
Mayotte: AS Rosador—lost against 4th tier Olympique Alès (7,572km away), 7th round
Tahiti: A. S. Pirae—lost against 6th tier FC Saint-Meziery (15,825km away), 7th round & also here's a good video about them
New Caledonia: Hienghène Sport—lost against 5th tier US Thionville Lusitanos (16,315km home), 7th round

So there are two remaining in the competition—Golden Lion FC from Martinique & CS Moulien from Guadeloupe.
Golden Lion will travel 6,942km away to face Ligue 1 side Lille, while CS Moulien will travel about 6,600km away to face 4th tier SO Romorantin.

Technically this is European football, but posting this here since those regions are in other federations like Concacaf, OFC or aren't in one at all.
All stats are from the The Sweeper podcast's official 'Twitter' account, highly recommended if you're interested in these niche football stories!

If you're gonna get bashed by some other higher division team anyway, won't it be more memorable to be bashed against the nation's biggest stars?
The split is optional but PSG always gives all the revenue to the lower clubs, so they're gonna make a big bag out of this too.

Actually PSG was also tied to a 6th tier club called US Pays de Cassel last year, they were beaten 0-7 but managed to take 41% possession.
But the best thing was that 2 of their players happened to be PSG ultras! Imagine telling you played out from the back against THE Kylian Mbappé to your friends! Cup games sure could give amateur sides a time of their lives.
