I watched that game, Schalke, who - let us not forget, were promoted this last season from the 2.Bundesliga - were, to put it bluntly, terrible.

Die Königsblauen have gaping, festering, holes all over their squad, and are still deep in the financial mire, as has been evidenced by the paucity of their recruitment this season (basically, they are skint).

Liverpool battered Ballmouth 9-0 today, and Ballmouth have at least made an effort to sign a couple of players; Schalke haven‘t, because they have about as much cash as the Dog & Duck.

£18 million these days just buys a striker who has played in a top league and scored a few goals, not guaranteed quality. I’m of the era that just keeps harking back to Stan.

£8.5 million we got for him after paying around £2 million. Therefore I expect a lot from a striker for £18 million which ain’t coming I don’t think. (Btw an Athletic article valued Stan at £132 million in today’s money).
Compare TA fee to the £25 million for MGW and I think the extra £7 million is well spent. (Not counting the addons as if he plays for England and we’re in Europe it’s been worth it).

I hope he’ll settle in but the ability to control the ball and make it stick is an issue and his goal just confirms what I thought from viewing the YouTube compilations - many goals seemed to be mis-hit scuffed efforts not clean strikes.

Didn't it take Collymore around 8 games to get off the mark for Forest and that was in the championship. Let's give Awoniyi a bit more time before putting him on the scrap heap.

He's looked pretty useful whenever he's played so far. With a bit more confidence and experience of how the team plays he could easily start scoring more regularly.

And we only had 2 wins from opening 8 games so yes, it’s early days. Just hope he comes good for us (or at least someone gets the goals and he becomes a cult hero for spanking a hat trick vs Derby in the FA Cup, or similar).

Lest we forget that when Lewis Grabban first joined and took a while to find his shooting boots, there were people who said he “was stealing a living”.

Awoniyi is a very good player and will be fine once the side clicks and he’s had a good run in it. All it requires is time.

I thought he looked quite lively when he came on on Sunday, more so than in other games. Nothing came from it sadly but he looked like he was worrying their defence. Let’s just trust the process a bit.

I think that's his strength. His strength, to keep defences occupied with bustling runs and his muscular presence. After all, some were strongly calling for Davis to come back, and that was what he was good at.

Give the guy time, after all, he might be better against Bournemouth than some of the other teams we've played so far.

Some people make me laugh, the lads only started 2 games and got 1 goal, yet people are "concerned".

Give him time for Christ sake, took Grabban 6 games as a starter to get 1 goal, apparently took SVC 8! Games to get going.

The pressure we out on him will be reflected in how he plays.
It's probably the same folk who were 'concerned' during preseason, because they'd read a negative tweet about his first touch stats and decided the Bundesliga makes any positive statistics irrelevant.

Awoniyi never going to be prolific, his doing the job Davis did last season and effectively keeping the defence busy and holding the ball up

Never going to be prolific seems an add one given he was a goal every other game for his last club - he's already been prolific.

I'm not sure I agree that's his game either; while he'll fight up there I think he's closer in style to Surridge than Davis, in that he'll run the channels and play off the shoulder more than ball-magnet Davis, who could sometimes take 3 or 4 players out of the equation with his combative close control.

These days, getting a goal every 3 games is bordering on the prolific and commands huge transfer fees. Look at Raphinha, Richarlison, etc

If any one of the attacking four of MGW, BJ, Dennis or Awoniyi get 10 plus goals this season (from 30 odd games say) they will likely be worth 25 to 40m+ (JL excepted as he is a free agent)

My only worry about Awoniyi is that he won't get a run of games (starts) that will benefit him. Think Lingard and Dennis might be slightly ahead of him to occupy that left side of the front 3

I still think of Schalke as a European outfit.

Also find it weird how Hannover, Nurnbeg and Hamburg are all Bundesliga 2.

Bit like Forest, Leeds and Villa in Championship I guess.
