Summer 2023 Transfer Window

Malwood

Origi is a loan. If he's rubbish, so what, don't play him and send him back at the end of the season.

I agree about Omo, though. Maybe they expect a Saudi/Turkey bid for Boly?

It's been a tough window with the looming departure of Brennan which Steve and the club must have known about for a while. We are weaker without Brennan and that's just the way it is, however, I think we've done the best we can with the situation when you accept that Brennan wanted/had to go.

I see the potential new "style" as something we've been forced into with Brennan's departure, rather than an opportunity that we've proactively sought out, but that is an option now.

  • Elanga - looks a solid signing and almost replicates Brennan's pace. He'll have extra responsibility and will start games now, so we'll see. Elanga lets us slowly transition into a higher possession game as he will be able to slot into Brennan's position in the short term.
  • Hudson-Odoi - Exciting one. He can slot into Brennan's position but with a different style of play. Getting the best from CHO will involve us getting more of the ball in midfield and building up play.
  • Turner - looks good.
  • Monitel/Aina/Tavares - not too sure about Steve's plans, but just adds cover to the positions we lost loans for.
  • Sangaré - Yep, proven quality in DCM, here's where we've immediately invested Brennan's sale.
  • Murillo/Omobamidele - Young, ball-playing CBs and are just what we need if they can settle and step up to the Premier League. Filipe, Worrall, and Niakate are here so they don't need to be rushed. They can help with what is clearly a strategy to have more of the ball in the long term.
  • Domínguez - I don't know anything about him, hopefully good in the box-to-box CM role.
  • Wood - a decent option from the bench, has good experience, and is part of the senior leadership team - important character to the club.
  • Vlachodimos - I don't know anything about him, unsure why we didn't spend an extra £5m to bring in Hendo tbh.
  • Santos - a seemingly good option potentially alongside Sangaré in CM holding two.
  • Origi - a decent backup for Taiwo.
That's a lot of signings again, and another huge ask for Steve. A couple of solid additions to the starting 11, with lots of upgrades at the squad level. However, the starting 11 will be weaker until the new players click.
I don't buy the 'weaker' squad claim.

Brennan's value is not a representation of his skill level being 3 times greater than Elanga's for instance. His value reflects the rarity of finding a player with his level of consistency.

So selling Brennan and buying 8 other players probably makes the squad stronger overall but weaker in one or two specific aspects where he excelled.

Yep, agree with that. I referred to us having a weaker starting 11, at least in the short term and called out that we’ve improved the squad.

Remember when we all thought 4/5 good signings should have been our target at the start of the window...

I feel like there has been some panic signings. Omobamidele for £11m seems steep for a player in and out of their side (even if he had potential) and I'm not that inspired by Origi.

I don't think the club were that good at moving on players either tbh. We have too many players for the 25 man squad - any chance Dennis, Kouyate, Horvath could be on the move to Turkey/Saudi Arabia/Greece?
I think it's harsh saying a 21 year old that's intended to be a long term project is a panic buy. Maybe it's more of the case of getting him now at a price they are happy with instead of 6 or 12 months down the line when our current players are out of contract?

You are entitled to your view on Origi but the club has a difficult spot in terms of striker position because Taiwo is so good, there are going to have to be concessions made in that position to be able to attract someone. As a loan, I think it's a sensible deal.

Don't know if this has been posted before but I would suggest if any of you are not aware who Divok Origi is and his actual world class talent then watch the video linked
I would say that this is the actual drop your pants down and helicopter signing and not Sangare

I posted this video a few days ago and I agree he appears to have been written off already.

On reflection (whilst basking in the rosy glow of a weekend which sees the Mighty Reds sitting comfortably in the top half and above the likes of Man U, Chelsea and Newcastle), I think it was a pretty fine window overall: the club have made a decent fist of strengthening every part of the team and signed a nice blend of youthful potential and proven experience, especially considering that we can't really yet compete with the top 6 or CL sides in appeal; we also moved out an awful lot of players, whether permanently or on loan and there's still the potential for more to follow.

I think the acid test for any transfer window is: is the squad better individually or in terms of depth than before? Obviously, any signing can fail for any number of reasons, but I genuinely believe we're in a much better place than we were at the end of last season, not least regarding depth.

Sorry, I'm sure this has all been said before. I'm just enjoying the moment and think we're going to have a decent year and it feels good!

Didn’t want to bump his actual thread to save the false hope that it provides….
