Indeed. We should avoid signing players with "ridiculous" Franco/West African names.
Listen Otis your interpretation of what I said is not fair, reasonable or remotely right and I don't take kindly to being called a racist, because I am not.

Lets not let this escalate out of control-its already silly season on the forum but this really is not something that should be casually bandied around.

Anyone think the loss tonight, as little as it means will have any effect on the recruitment teams thoughts? Make them push the boat out even more than they have so far.

It shouldn’t do but you never know in football, people over react over nothing all the time.
No.
Nobody ever gives a fig what happens in pre-season as long as the fitness levels and match sharpness increases.
Scores don't matter, I'd imagine tactics will take a back seat for the first couple of games, but drilled in during training

“We’ve had a decent start, in terms of bringing players in. But it’s only a start. We need to bring a lot more in, for sure.”

So we spending 200mil now then hah
I don't think Coops is accounting for the expected arrivals of Richards and Williams in that interview, if/when those two are confirmed we will be alot closer to where he wants us to be I'm sure and we should only be 2 or 3 more new faces from being ready.

Legit question, once Richards and Williams join do we think our team, still lacking CAM and CM reinforcements beats out playoff final team? I’m not sure. Feels like minor improvements at a couple positions and some key holes still there

I'd say this team loses the midfield battle but would still edge the playoff side in a one off match. We will look substantially better in 2 weeks in all areas I'm certain

We were always going to bring in 4 or more guys; the result today doesn't really affect that.

I can’t believe people even think todays game will affect anything
Unfortunately, I have read some places where some people think we need to bring in at least 8 or more guys. And yes I wish I was lying smh. Our business is far from done regardless of how today went. I may be in the minority, but I saw some positive things out there.

That's probably not that far off, we haven't replaced any of the 5 loans (yet). Our starting 11 is currently weaker than last season, and we need better subs.

2Lwbs, 2 Rwbs, 1 Striker, 1/2 Am, 1/2 CM, this is obviously not including the 2 wbs who have allegedly signed but not been announced.

8 seems about right to me. Our squad was tiny really last season, we played virtually the same XI for the last 3 months or so of the season and only ever brought on the same 3/4 subs. And since then we've lost 2 keepers, 5 loan players and Grabban.

We've brought in 6 so far pending the 2 wing backs. So as yet we're still not even at the point we were at last season in terms of pure bodies in the squad.

Again, on the assumption Richards and Williams are done and dusted;

Absolutely must sign:
1 x sub keeper
1 x wing back cover (right)
2 x central midfielders
1 x striker

So that's 5 that are definitely needed.

Really could do with:
1 x wing back cover (left)
1 x central midfielder
1 x forward (be it winger or striker)

IF we manage all of those positions our squad would be as follows, not including those probably heading out on loan.

Henderson, NEW KEEPER, Smith

Worrall, McKenna, Cook, Niakhate, Williams, Richards, Biancone, NEW LEFT WING BACK, NEW RIGHT WING BACK

Yates, Colback, Cafu, NEW CM, NEW CM, NEW CM

Surridge, Awoniyi, Johnson, Lolley, NEW FW, NEW ST

Squad of 24 there, still probably small compared to a lot of teams in the PL but definitely one that should be able to compete, on paper of course...

But yeah, basically if we only bring in a couple more and stick with that then we're in trouble. Luckily it seems Cooper and the team know this and are working their bollocks off to bring both quantity and quality.

Firstly mate, the post you quoted was not attributed to you, and I did not accuse you of being racist. I did imply a hint of xenophobia however, which I did qualify by clearly stating that I hoped I was wrong.

For some context, my wife of 52-years is of Caribbean heritage and, just like Cornet, her maiden name, Martell, is of French descent. I struggled to see what is "ridiculous" about either?

Lets leave this here. Trading snippets like this isn't going to get us anywhere and the forum in littered with stuff spiralling into screeching rows between people who usually get on and enjoy sharing the love of the good ship NFFC.

I apologise for anything I may have said that offended, and I hope you can understand how being accused of being a racist (tacitly) or a xenophobe (written above) might be a bit upsetting because its deeply hurtful and something that I am not....

You could explain how the names in question are “ridiculous”

Assuming Williams and Richards are "real", a Garner replacement is the next priority. Need midfield creativity to feed Johnson / Awoniyi / Surridge.

Shall I get the mods involved?. I'm trying to shut this down because its a pointless misunderstanding and is clearly going to lead to an unpleasant row and now I've got you piling in for some reason?.

Give it a rest, please.

Assuming we get the central midfield acquisitions right and the players we have brought in live up to their expectations then yes, will be better.

1) Henderson is better than Samba.
2) Worrall-McKenna-Niakhate should be an upgrade on Worrall-Cook-McKenna
3) Williams and Richards a certain upgrade on Spence and Colback purely because of the latter name not being what we want in a wing back at all.
4) Zinckernagel had an end product problem so whoever replaces him should hopefully offer more goals.
5) Davis all round good game but perhaps not as clinical as Awoniyi, hopefully.

Have to remember our team last year was good enough to beat Arsenal, destroy Leicester and go tie to toe with Liverpool. If we are better than last year even by the smallest of margins we'll be ok this year.

Sort the glaring gap in central midfield, gel quickly and fingers crossed the new guys live up to expectation.

I have shown before on here, that I don't have a clue about money.

But I have a thought. I think money spent on infrastructure is not subject to FFP. So if EM spends all our Sky money on players, then uses his own money on things which are not subject to FFP, that could explain why we are spending what seems like inordinate amounts of money on players, both transfers and wages.

Other clubs might have more cautious budgets and approach the Prem riches with less abandon. Which means weaker teams in the end.

Whatever the anser is, I'm thrilled that we are taking such a bold approach. I just hope the players can deliver.

I have no idea how Wilford Lane compares to some of the best facilities in the Premier League but I'd imagine it's probably a level below. Great but not state of the art.

We all know the City Ground could do with a lick of paint and development of lots of its facilities although I think that has been happening this summer hence playing Valencia at Meadow Lane.

This is a massive opportunity to really build the club throughout.

Cracking post and not negative at all.

Pretty much sums up where I am, as well. We are doing smart business, improving the squad significantly but it's still going to be a fight week in, week out and first target simply has to be to scrape together enough points to stay up.

Fantastic to see some outside validation that our signings appear to be good, too. Always get worried we are all in our little echo chambers convincing ourselves that we have signed quality.

Perhaps we should agopt the Millwaal "Everybody Hates Us leitmotif :)

“Piling in”? It’s a public forum mate. I’m commenting on it.

You said some player names were “ridiculous” then when Otis asked what you meant by that you started getting offended. He was perfectly within his rights to ask and you are within your rights to answer, but you didn’t.

Could’ve been avoided if you’d just said why you thought Cornet was a ridiculous name in the first place.

Not sure why you need to get mods involved.

I may be wrong but I believe new FFP rules will now include spending on infrastructure, youth and womens football teams. Kieran McGuire mentioned it on his podcast. I hope I'm wrong as yet again this will favour clubs that have already improved their facilities.
