Our esteemed set piece coach. Ha ing joined in December, i's not clear whether or not he is still at the club. One can only assume he is either:

A) Useless

B) No longer here

C) Not being listened to

Either way our stats around offensive and defensive set pieces are shockingly bad. The reliance on MGW taking them when it is clear to see that he is bad at them continues to baffle everyone.

It is beyond concerning that we show no sign of improvement on this front, and actually look to be getting worse.

So where are we going wrong, why, and how on earth do we stop the rot?

Its been widely reported that he's not been involved with the first team squad since Cooper left.

He does have an excellent track record working with developing players and hes been doing that with the u21s.

I thought our offensive set peices looked a bit better yesterday. Think our defensive ones are obviously still an issue, we don't have any dominant aerial strength, we don't seem to put people on the posts either.

That combined with us having a relatively young back 4 (23, 21, 21, 27 yesterday) just means we are a bit naive but.....if we can stay up and get an extra year with these guys I think the future is bright.

Why don't we put some twat on the post?

I know it seems to have universally gone out of favour in professional football, but back when it was standard practice, there would be dozens of goal line clearances from these f***ers throughout the season.

We’ve conceded 21 goals from set pieces now this season I believe. Could a man on each post at corners really have made that record any worse?

Blows my mind.

Even if they are not going to use the set piece coach, surely the coaching staff have been around long enough to coach the basics and devise the odd one or two variations, both in attack and defence.

Up there with putting a blokes on the post at a corner (would always do this if I was in charge) why don't we leave one or both of our fastest players up near the halfway line. Several reasons for this, the first being it immediately takes 2/3/4 attacking players out of our penalty area as they will have to mark the aforementioned players and b it gives us a chance of picking up a hoofed clearance which otherwise would come straight back into our penalty area.

I know the "you're defending a corner so defend the corner" philosophy came from Ceramic Ferguson but he was not right about everything.

Aye, you'd think so.

I'd genuinely love to know what's going off here for sure. How 2 managers have had the same issue but refused to utilize the same solution in that time just raises so many questions.

Sheff U are set to appoint a set-piece specialist coach to address their issues with it this year too.

'the small gains that can make big differences'

"We have got good coaches who can deliver but the time that goes into looking at all the data that surrounds it, you'll see changes at the club in the next two or three months, whether it's recruitment and everything that goes with that, the medical department, there's review and reflection, and for the small gains that can make big differences.

"They're very innovative and everyone has to keep up with the growing trends. Certainly from a set-play point of view It's something we're very keen to address and hopefully get right."

Reyna & Danilo we’re taking corners yesterday, so we’re obviously looking to improve offensively - and our 1st goal was directly from a corner, so that must be working.
The Wolves equaliser was because Wood took his eye off the ball and let his man have a free header.

Maybe they are happy with the solution but not the implementation. It could be they both see the need for work on set pieces, see the need for the set piece coach, but don't think Rusk is the answer.

It isn't as if there's much in his CV which suggests he is able to work top flight teams at set piece situations - playing career mainly in the lower leagues for Boston, then a few months at Stockport, mainly working otherwise with age group sides...

1 can be marked out too easy.

Id go further and leave 2 or 3 forward, spread across the centre cirlce

That would take all the oppo defenders out of the attack and give us an outlet n some threat

wood isn't to blame, sels had it covered, the header wasn't that powerful but you have to ask why sels decided to push the ball into the wolves players. He could have come out to collect but he choose to stay in his line.

What's happened to leaving a man or even two on the halfway line when defending set pieces? Surely if one mans on the half way line they have to leave a player up to mark him and also gives us the chance of a quick counter.
I heard a tactical analyst talk about this on a podcast.

The general approach is now about planning for the current phase of play, so the defending team responds to the attacking team who have all the advtanges offered by a set piece.

They argue that leaving men up is planning for the following phase of play but a counter-attack is only one scenario. It means that the defending team is not prepared for the current phase.

The analyst said that in the event of a team leaving players up, the advice would be to the attacking to stick with their set-piece plan and use the advtange of more players in play.

I posted a link on this forum somewhere so I'll try and dog it out.

It seems like some sort of cruel joke that so much was made of getting a set piece coach, and then when we did we turned into probably the worst team in history at defending against them.

There are two things that would improve us instantly in my opinion.

1. Go man to man instead of zonal marking. Increase the responsibility.

2. Leave at least 2 players up on the half way line. Elanga would be perfect if he's playing. Having everyone back both encourages the opposition to throw players in the box without fear of being countered, and adds to the general chaos in the box. More players in the box means more chance someone blocks off someone else or gets in the way.

As amazing a find as he's been I'm not sure having a CB in the team that's under 6ft helps either.

We need to strip it right back to it's most basic form. Man marking with a man on each post and another protecting Sels. Anything more than that seems to bamboozle them.
I agree Notch. I have neither the knowledge or pro-experience to tell UEFA-badged coaches what to do, but I played a couple of decades in parks-level local football to be aware that sometimes just focusing on the very fundamentals can help - run and tackle hard and be absolutely determined to stick your head in first on every ball.

In our case, I'm convinced that having to play too many games without genuine top-level experience at the back and in midfield is a significant factor. Having Felipe, Boly and Aurier around at this stage last season was huge. If we do survive, the benefit of this season to Omo and Murillo be almost beyond measure.

Sels didn’t cover himself in glory , but if Wood doesn’t give his man a free header then there’s no need for Sels to make a save
