Marriott cheap backup ? This is peterborough here , their players are never cheap. Cost derby up to 5 million and marriott scored a total of 7 paltry league goals in a playoff team that had mason mount and harry wilson on season loans. Hardly a good return. If he had been in the forest team , he would have been far far worse like this season at wednesday , grand total of 0 goals.

...and more to the point Alf would have been using him
As an example of our “failed” recruitment policy.
Marriott has not been a good signing or any sort of value on the money that was spent on him...

Theres a famous quote in cycling (my other sport) relating to kit: light, strong, cheap, pick two...

Translated to football its: young, seriously talented, cheap, pick two. Which to my mind sums up exactly why we bring in players like Sow and exactly what our problems are in restocking the club with "youngsters with upside" who are going to get us promoted at first go.

If you know where we can find some seriously talented cheap players do let us know! I can point you in the direction of some cheap options who were talented in their day, but their day is long behind them...

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but the choice was 2 of cheap, talented and young. Unfortunately talented is never cheap, regardless of age.

Cheap, talented and in good shape would be more accurate!

It is if they are ancient, knackered and over the hill.
I never said when they were talented....

I think there are plenty of bargains such as Toney, Antonio & Woan around to name a few off the top of my head. We've just had people who are completely incapable at spotting them.

Hilarious. You said at the time that Antonio was overpriced and we shouldn't have bought him and now you're holding him up as the type of 'bargain' we should be looking for. So full of shit...

There’s a difference between having talent and translating that into good performances though. Apart from phenoms like Sancho, Bellingham, Rooney etc, performances tend to come with a bit of experience under their belt. Until they’ve played regularly, someone has to give them a chance to prove they can do the business.

With young players you have to put up with some inconsistency which is why you don’t build a whole team of them, but they also make the quickest big strides in improvement.

I couldn’t personally name them right now, but I can guarantee that there will be young players released by big clubs this summer who will be touted for PL moves in a year or two, while we will probably still be stuck in the Championship going nowhere, wishing they played for us.

He talks absolute rubbish mate. Preaches like he is the oracle of football, yet you just have to look back on all the rubbish he talks then contradicts himself a few months later. He is the king of hindsight - and offers no actual interest to any discussion considering half of his posts have a self serving point behind them.

Also, the irony of fawning over Paul Coutts (loaned out by Fleetwood prior to his contract expiring BTW) yet slagging the club off for signing Sow because of his injury record, has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever read.

Ideal Watson replacement as a "quarterback", and . I've seen him play live for Sheff U a fair bit, and think he would have been bang on cover to thin out Watsons games a bit, so he wasn't so battered come season end.

Other Championship clubs may not have needed that type of player. Plenty play without one, but Lamouchi's early pre-season games showed him experimenting with that and a few varioations on 4-1-4-1, so it made sense.
.

I admire and appreciate your desperate effort in trying to come up with a considered response to my question Alf, but sorry, I don't buy it. There's a reason no Championship club wanted to sign Coutts, and it's because the lad was no longer able to play at that level. As much as you obviously wished it hadn't, it happens I'm afraid.

He was 2m + addons wasn't he? Those add ons won't have even been payed, and 2m on Marriot would have been better than 5m on Soudani & Da Costa.

No I haven't. I'm pointing out that even players you pick out as as bad backs of mine are still better than our awful recruiters of the past few years.

Stuart Pearce knows far more than me about football. I've never disputed that. Antonio shows exactly why he should be recruiting and not me.

What an odd thing to say.

I respect and counter-adire that opinion Otis. As someone who's seen him play a significant amount of times, and who's main footballing contacts still working in the pro leagues are are at Sheff U, beg to differ.

But football's all about opinions, and I'm sure you've watched plenty of him and spoken to plenty of his ex-work collogues regards him too.

Unfortunately chaps I'm off for some medical treatment this afternoon which will last over the weekend, so I apologies for any late replies which might not happen until next week. But I'll be back to educate you all further then.

Hope you have a good weekend :)

Good luck, Alf. Hope your back fighting fit soon as I do enjoy seeing you single handedly arguing with the whole forum.

I was totally unaware that you're professionally involved in fooball Alf, and so I can only bow to that knowledge and experience, which vastly trumps my modest local park-level playing career in the '70s until the early-80's.

My opinion on Coutts is based solely on the basic (and evidently mistaken it would seem) logic of there being no demand for him from any Championship club - which clearly demonstrates how little I know compared to someone with your professional eye for a player.

To echo other posters, I hope your treatment goes well mate.
