It is a shame he faded out during his time here.

He was one of my favourite players to watch in recent years, look so clumsy yet he was often so effective - and despite his appearence record his record when he did play was excellent. You even look at his last run of games and the results were positive.

34 starts
17 wins
12 draws
5 losses
-----
63 points
1.85 ppg (would be 85 points over a season)

Good luck to him at his next club, positive character that looks like he just enjoys what he does.

Yes, when he was fit he was brilliant; our record with him in the side speaks for itself. Its such a shame he was made of glass.

One of those players that needed to be fully fit to be effective. At his peak was so positive for us and bit of a cult hero. End of Sabri reign seemed to playing with knocks which made him so immobile and walking yellow or red card. Wish him well, seemed good fella

Spot on.

If ever there was an example of how much bullshit was spouted about the "excellent" signings we made last year, it was the constant use of Sow as an example that our recruitment setup was amazing.

Yep, on his day a game-changer and massive boost to the side. But what's the point in that if he's only fit for half the season, and for every great game he has he has a clumsy, oafish one where he looks like a red card waiting to happen?

You only have to look at his appearance history pre-Forest to see he's no stalwart. Throw a player like that into a 46 game season arguable the most physically competitive league in the world, and surprise surprise he breaks lots.

Good luck to the bloke though. The type of signing we should be making when they're 23 and under the radar, not 30 and on their way out.

You’re absolutely right, as always Alf but of course you are applying your rose tinted perfect world spectacles.
It would be so easy if the rest of the football world just fell into place wouldn’t it.

The nuts of the argument that don’t stack up
Are there aren’t many uncut gems left at 23 (which actually isn’t young) who are capable of performing at the level and effectiveness that Sow did when he was on the pitch.

We are hampered by lack of spondoulies so we are constantly having to recruit compromises...

I know you will say it’s because we’ve wasted money and if we’d done better it would have been different but the truth is when your shopping at a low level the risks are greater...

Ivan Toney?

I thought he looked good at Posh Jan 2019 when he was 22......

https://www.forestforum.co.uk/threads/47585-BUPA-Ivan-Toney

.....and 18 months before he was deemed to be worth the 5m + add ons which saw Bretford land him. I reckon he's have cost 1-2m more than Sow, but for a striker that's expected ayway. Especially one 8 or so years younger than when we landed Sow.

But obviously Da Costa and Soudani is where it's at, 5m well spent there  (which kinda suggest we did have the money, just not the nouse to spend it right)

I think there are plenty of bargains such as Toney, Antonio & Woan around to name a few off the top of my head. We've just had people who are completely incapable at spotting them.

Hopefully Hughton can rectify that. Gardner being a prime example of how to loan a young player, as opposed to the likes of what Modesto & co were doing.

Was the Robin to Watson's Batman for much of 19/20. A permasmile that hypnotised many a ref to keep his cards in his pocket.

He never knew how to pace himself throughout a match though, and if he could he wouldn't have been so effective. Oppo players soon sussed out that once he got going he couldn't change direction and had the braking distance of a 737. An easy freekick waiting to happen.

Seems a great lad though, would probably fit in well in the Chinese Leagues

Forget Hughton Alf, what we need is you in the managers hot seat-never mind being clever about the odd player in 10 that you saw that went on to look good in the Championship you have more intuition than mystic meg.
Thinking about it we could all get baseball hats with MFGA on them....

Actually, we should.

Anyone still thinking he wouldn't have been better cover for Watson than Semedo was is just as short sighted as Modesto.

His fitness issues notwithstanding, I actually enjoyed watching Sow breaking-up opposition play.

I'm sorry anyone thinking Sow was a bad signing needs their head testing. Every single player we sign has a compromise built in because if they didn't they would be out of our price range.
Sow at 30 looked a good bet. And he was, until the wheels came off, but that was no ones fault....

He wasn't a bad signing, I certainly haven't said that and don't recall anyone else saying it either. But he was often hailed as a brilliant signing, showcasing the genius of our then recruitment team.

He wasn't. He was OK, maybe even good, but ultimately his lack of physical endurance and "breakability" meant we bought a good player for half a season out of the 2 he was here.

And you say it was no-one's fault that the wheels came off, but I disagree. Here's Sow appearance history......

OMS26U4.png

He hasn't broke 2000 min in any league in 10 years. Compare that to Ben Watson who managed over twice that at 4001 min for us last season.

I think that, looking at his appearance history, Sow never looked like someone who was gonna be a stalwart.

Exactly. A fully fit Sow at 30 is out of our price range unfortunately. He was great when he was fit and even if he was in and out he’d be a great option. But now that he is seemingly injured all the time, it’s right to release him.

We would’ve known his injury record was sketchy, but we’re trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents here, so took the risk.

All our signings have at least one flaw, usually it’s ability or fitness. I’d rather it be inexperience personally. The top teams are pumping out plenty of technically gifted kids that just need an opportunity to gain experience.

Yet we allowed Fleetwood Town to take him from under our nose!

In all seriousness though Alf, what is it you've personally spotted in this Coutts-fella that no other Championship or leading League One club did?
I don't know where to, but it seems that Fleetwood have since released him.

Theres a famous quote in cycling (my other sport) relating to kit: light, strong, cheap, pick two...

Translated to football its: young, seriously talented, cheap, pick two. Which to my mind sums up exactly why we bring in players like Sow and exactly what our problems are in restocking the club with "youngsters with upside" who are going to get us promoted at first go.

Ian Woan? Runcorn only went bust fifteen years ago.

We pick up Jack Burkitt for a snip from Darlaston Town. Why isn't Mephisto scouting there?

probably the same way he wanted forest to sign jack marriot. Fantastic signing for derby.

And that’s the point isn’t it. For every Toney there’s a Marriot or a Cummings.

What was it the Posh chairman said about Marriot when he was dangling him in front of our Now’s like a fake diamond necklace?

Ideal Watson replacement as a "quarterback", and . I've seen him play live for Sheff U a fair bit, and think he would have been bang on cover to thin out Watsons games a bit, so he wasn't so battered come season end.

Other Championship clubs may not have needed that type of player. Plenty play without one, but Lamouchi's early pre-season games showed him experimenting with that and a few varioations on 4-1-4-1, so it made sense.

In all honesty, the weird one for me was Yacob's departure. He looked to fit nicely. But again, probably boardroom/agent politics.

Joking aside, Jack Marriot scored 10 goals in this league the season AK was after him. We signed Bonatini & Ansarifard, then spent the same amount that Marriot cost on Da Costa instead.

I wanted Marriot here because of the AK link, and fact that we were meant to be going "all in" for success. The failure to sign him, spunk 25m up the wall, then lumber AK & MON with "make-do's" was where the frustration lie. But folk got obsessed with Marriot as a player, so I obligatorily wound them up.

That's what I wanted here. Cheap young backup capable of scoring with potential. He proved to be just that when he first arrived, but Derby's drink-snort-drive culture really hasn't done any of them any favours.

Marriott cheap backup ? This is peterborough here , their players are never cheap. Cost derby up to 5 million and marriott scored a total of 7 paltry league goals in a playoff team that had mason mount and harry wilson on season loans. Hardly a good return. If he had been in the forest team , he would have been far far worse like this season at wednesday , grand total of 0 goals.
