Renan Augusto Lodi

Lodi was great, was one of our most consistent performers especially towards the end of the season. That being said the time to sign him was when we had the option for £17m, we tried angling for £13m and the rest is history

Some may say or imply we should just have paid the fee in the option. However you can't really blame the club for trying to get the player for less, at least initially.

Certainly with the FFP situation we do need to be careful what we spend. Olo Aina isn't as good a LB as Lodi, but he is a capable PL option, and cost us nothing.

I don't blame us for low balling, but he was one of our few consistent performers and it was a very fair price. I just don't think it makes much sense to go back in for him now when the price will likely be similar to what we weren't interested in paying back then, and all he has to show for it is a season in Saudi where he's looked well off it

Lodi is one of my favourite players from the last couple of seasons, absolute no brainer if he was available for a reasonable fee.

Renan Lodi has terminated his contract with Al Hilal and is now available on a FREE transfer.

Doesn't matter

He wasn't a free agent before our window closed.
Clubs can sign free agents, who are players not under contract with another team, even after the transfer window closes. However, these players can only be registered and become eligible to play if there is space on the club's squad list. If a club's squad list is full, the free agent must wait until the next transfer window or when a space becomes available to be registered and play.

He was the most consistent player of the Cooper era and I was sadder to see him go than anyone else. He made me feel like we had a real Premier League team when the rest was just all spare parts fit together around MGW.

Actually, we can only bring a player in if their contract had expired / was terminated before the closure of our own window. We released Bowler and Dennis, and if they hadn't been able to find other clubs, they could be picked up at any time by another club either if they were picked up by a club whose window closed after they had been released, or hadn't closed yet. We loaned Jota to Turkey because their window was still open. We could have agreed to loan him to the EFL but they wouldn't be able to process the registration until January. Same situation as when we agreed to bring in Scarpa ages before we did but the deal couldn't go through until our window opened in January.

As for the 2nd point I think we can register a free agent or any other player even if we don't have space in the PL/UEFA squad. But those can't be changed unless there is a window too. Remember when we had all the CBs get injured and we'd deregistered Cook, he was still our player. Chelsea had plenty last season who were only in one of the PL or UEFA squads and clubs have unregistered players all the time, especially those with larger squads. Probably even some newer signings get included there.

Knowing this I would make contact if I were Forest and see if we can gazump whatever else he might have in the pipeline. I was gutted to lose him, he was one of the very few players that looked really comfortable in the PL and he was outstanding on a few occasions for us.

Nottingham's dirty secret
Loved him when he was here. Proven quality. With Aina's injury this would make so much sense if possible. Go on Edu.....

That's only true if the player was a free agent when the relevant window closed.

So in this case - unless it was signed off a couple weeks ago but only announced now, we can't sign Lodi because he wasn't a free agent when our window closed. Even if it was done previously and he is available, we've named a full 25 so couldn't register him for the Premier League anyway.

We've got precedent here - 3 years ago, McKenna picked up a long term injury a few days after the squad list was submitted, so we tried to replace him in the 25 with Cook and were told it wasn't allowed.

Is it possible - if not in the PL - to add him to the EL squad?
Under a new rule we're allowed one change to the EL squad where there's a long term injury. So in theory it would be possible, if we haven't already invoked that rule to bring Zinchenko or Hutchinson in.

Feel like it's massively unlikely we use it to sign a new player when there's viable options already not in the 22.
